Adding lower bumper foglights to pre face lift b5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    As the title says!

In the post making their way towards me are a set of grill foglights. I'm intending on fitting these to my b5 a4!
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOG-LIGHTS...60891383613%26

Now, my A4 already has foglights in the main headlight block, which work ect ect. Now my intentions are to splice the new foglight wiring straight onto the wiring of the original foglights. Thus giving me lower bumper foglights + original ones.

Now this is my big plan, will it work? would i need to put a higher rating fuse in to counter the added bulbs?

I would not recommend doubling (or close to it) the power draw on the stock fog light circuit. If you want to run the headlight fogs along with lower fogs, I would use a relay or two to power the new fog lights.

    Hmm ok, makes sense.

What if I did splice the wires then simply removed the original foglight bulb... thus removing the power draw issue. Plus Saves me faffing with wiring through the engine bay to the dash ect...

What I did was cut the fog light where it enters the headlight plug and extend it down to the bumper fogs. Didn't bother removing the bulbs in the headlights.

Much easier option, thank you my friend. Work smarter, not harder ;)

Sure! Let us know how the install goes, I haven't seen many people install those fogs. I went with OEM fogs. The install was super easy since my car already had a facelift front bumper with the correct mounting points.

I wouldn't recommend using the stock wiring to POWER fog lights. The stock pre-facelift fog light bulbs are something like 5W, so let's say they draw half an amp.
The wiring is rather thin, but obviously sufficient for the stock bulbs.

Each bulb in those fog lights you linked to will draw 55W - roughly 5amps. The stock wiring may be okay with them (not sure on what gauge wire is used) but chances are you shouldn't pass that much current through them.

I'd do what lm0812 originally suggested, and use the factory wiring to act as a signal to a relay, and then send +12V from the battery to that relay, and have the relay power the fog lights.

BTW, I bought a pair of those fog lights a couple years ago. Please don't put HID bulbs in them otherwise you will totally BLIND other drivers on the road.
Also they come with some self-tapping screws that will put 3 holes in the bumper on each side, so be prepared for that.

Here's a pic of them installed, if you will ignore the LEDs I put in:

And just for fun, the LEDs at night-time, with the camera flash:

    And no camera flash:

I still have them, and they're just sitting in a parts bin... if you're interested I'd be happy to sell them to you for only a little more than the cost of shipping :)
Lastly, I installed a pair of LED bulbs into the foglights themselves, as they were just too bright for my liking even with halogen bulbs. (I didn't want to be "that guy" on the road)

MetalMan, the stock prefacelift bulbs are a 55w H1 bulb. That's why I didn't install additional relays and just ran the stock fog light wire down to the facelift fogs.

Ah, you know what, I just realized my pre-facelift A4 came with the Euro-style pre-facelift S4 headlights (2-piece with projectors, uses a small 194 bulb for "fog lights"), and I was basing my information on that. I've never actually seen stock pre-facelift headlights in person. Thanks for the information!

Don't buy those..it is cheap looking and won't fit correctly..The wires used are of bad quality and it started melting with in five minutes of operation with stock watts. I then replaced the wires and ran it for a week, but took it out soon.

I have a set lying around, if you want just pay the shipping and will send it to you.

I'me going to put LED bulbs in them which should produced less heat, so hopefully that will solve that issue!

I'm hoping the standard wiring can withstand these LEDs?

You've got the right idea, but the fog lights use H3 bulbs.
BTW, I'll respond to your PM when I have a chance to look at mine and get back to you on their current condition.

I think you need H3 LEDs. But I guess you'll be still not that happy with the fitment of these fog lamps in the bumper. Keep in mind that there is no adjustment possible to the fog light once it is mounted on the bumper.

Better you get a used facelift bumper and then go for the OEM fog lamps route. That's what I did. OEM fog lamps>>>> aftermarket

    This is how it looked in my car;

Hey man, thanks for the images!
A a result of the impending arrival of the ill fitting fog lights I have gone out and got some lovely long rubber stuff, bit like a bicycle inner tube, to neatly fit around the edge of the fog light to make/help it sit flush and correct. This will be another one of my DIY adventures which I will post up the progress of!

p.s. Impressive pebble dashing I've ever seen!

Fitted the fogs yesterday, All went well, wired up very simply, to the old foglights (removed the old bulbs)

Had to sand down the plastic casing on the new foglights to allow them to fit flush in the bumper, two self tapping screws per foglight.

I will take some photos tomorrow of the new wiring.

Purchased some 12v H3 LED lights to replace the hideous yellow ones (Not yet fitted). £5

Total cost for this mod was £40 approx

Here's what they look like in the car,
