Car stopped high idle when cold?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 06 2.0t tip, test pipe, new dv, new plugs, new air filter. ever since ive owned the car it has idled high for a min or so then dropped to normal idle. I figured this was normal a lot of cars will idle high until they start to warm up a touch. all of sudden it doesn't do it any more. soon as I start it it goes to normal idle. also ive noticed that my rpms are fluctuating at a constant speed. tonight leaving work my tach jumped in 1k increments but the car was pulling smooth. my boost gauge is spot on what it should be nd doesn't seem to fluctuate with the tach. there is no cel have not checked for any codes yet. is there a temp sensor possibly bad? any one have a similar problem? my search didn't pull up anything like this.

This is not exactly the same as yours but my car idles a bit higher on completely COLD start ups (around 1200) and then after say 15-20 seconds idles down to normal.

Well once in a while it will just idle close to normal at the complete cold start up. Mine idle does not change at a constant speed though.

I shrugged it off to ambient temperatures.

Car stopped high idle when cold?

Had the same problem. I think it might be my battery going out.

Here in canada my car does this. Lately almost all starts its in high idle for less then 1 minute and the drops down. I dunno wtf is up but i usually just let it sit for 5-10 b4 i drive to warm things up a bit.

Check the battery connections and grounds. Might be a good idea to take the battery to an auto parts store for a test too.

The high idle at start is for warm-up purposes AFAIK. Gets the oil flowing, cat fired, etc. It shouldn't last more than half a minute on a completely cold start.

Humm good to know, i had battery test done last oil change it came up as "bad" but ive kept my own meter on it for some time (since going BT) but its always 13.9v or 14.2v so ive never worried.

My high idle b4 it started getting colder would be a few minutes honestly 3 min usually. But if you say a half min on a cold start that seems about what mine is doing now.

High idle goes away by design at very cold temps.

I figured it was a cold start sequence to warm things up. now its getting cold and it goes away. I will check the battery it was around 25 deg last night and it seemed to turn over slow.

This is all normal. The high idle only happens under certain conditions. When its very cold it will usually just start up at normal low idle.

Nothing to see here, carry on.

Lol good to know. I assumed the high idle at start up was normal but I did not know it would not idle high during cold conditions so that helps a bit.

I've noticed the same thing, glad to hear it's normal... However, I've also noticed that the car cranks a lot longer and sputters to a start on cold mornings. I've read that a new N80 valve can cure this, but my instincts are that the car needs a carbon cleaning. Is there a definitive fix to this other than the N80 or Carbon Buildup?

This is perfectly normal. the higher RPM's at start allow for the CAT to worm up for proper emissions and ext.

Also letting your car worm up for 5-10 minutes is not good, that is a way for carbon to build up. You are supposed to start the car and drive off, driving gentle until it is wormed up.

This. New cars are designed to driven right off the bat. Just turn it on and go. Letting the car idle while cold just adds unnecessary wear at low oil pressure and tight (cold) tolerances. The faster you can get the car up to temp, while keeping engine load low, the better.

the pulsing and weird tach issues im having I fear, are something to do with my torque converter. from the research I did it describes it to a T. although it only does it when its cold as things warm up it seems to go away. its very annoying. I may get a tranny service kit and hope for the best. have not had good luck with this car.

I had the pulsing and shit with my car, It jolted when drove off immediately in the winter it was really bad. I always waited the 30-60 seconds until the RPM's drop to drive off, it would be a lot better, but still there for the first 2-3 minutes of my drive.

I let mine run until the idle settles out before taking off. I guess I'm just paranoid because of the aftermarket pistons.

Yeah with my A4 I waited 30 seconds just for the idol to drop because it was very jerky and hesitant if you didn't. My S4 tho drives awesome right away.

Aftermakret pistons could make a difference, I really don't know. I know the tolerences tend to be much tighter.

Same. I always let the choke finish, plus it gives me time to set up my music and plug my phone in

Noticed my B5 did the same thing the past couple of cold mornings. Didn't idle high like it normally does when the outside temps are warmer. Good to see it's normal.
