I know a few people use it, but in my opinion, it's just a peace of mind thing..... How many people on these boards actually run into an instance where they need video evidence of something?!?

Great item when a motorcycle gang attacks your car =) After that incident, makes me think about getting one for our family minivan

I use a go pro and record all the time. Most every time I drive. Not really due to getting killed by a bike gang lol but because people hit and run in my city a lot and proof is always nice. Plus on the off chance that I will catch something awesome. I have a 32 gig card which records around 4.5 hours of driving and it charges all the time in my car.

I think it is an awesome thing to have for fun and in some instances proof.

That's how I feel about it. A friend had a incident where he was at a off ramp of the hwy and the person in front of him back up into him. They told the insurance he rear ended them.. Ended up going on his insurance.

I don't have one but for the $250, it is good peace of mind. Well worth it. I have thought of picking one up.

I have a Blackvue DR500GW-HD 16GB 'Car Black Box/DVR Recorder', paired with a 32GB microSD card. I find it useful on roadtrips, etc. Like others have mentioned, it is also a 'peace of mind' thing, what with the 'hazards' of city driving.. :)
When I need some flexibility with regards to camera placement/angles, I use the GoPro.

    What brands does everyone have?

I came across this website a month or so back that is a plethora of information on dash cams for those that are interested.

+1. The Blackvue has motion + sound detection mode; quite invaluable IMHO if you park in sketchy neighborhoods, even in parking garages.

Link? :) would be nice for it to turn on when needed instead of draining the battery or something.

Not to say Blackvue in any good but check the link I put up first. Lots of other options with just as good quality.

The Panorama II looks like a really good camera. Not too expensive, great video quality in daylight or at night, and a manufacturer that constantly releases firmware updates. If I was going to buy one, that would be the one I'd grab.

This is a good all around choice. Others i've found to be good value and still maintained good video quality are the following.

    DVR-207 - $45 - VIDEO
    G1W - $52 (Probably the one I am picking up) - VIDEO
    Mobius - $85 - VIDEO

IMHO all those are great quality for the money and I'm hard pressed to spend more than $100 based on the sample video quality provided.

The other thing I have been debating is multi-channel units. This one I've been eyeing for some time now. The video quality isn't up to par with the prior cams but you do get a rear camera which I feel might be worth the sacrifice in quality.

    i1000 / F70 / X6 - $70 - VIDEO

Still undecided but I will be making a choice in the next few weeks.

That's what i was looking at, plus I like the screen; easily delete unneeded footage.

Unless u have a budget of a few hundred, then go for those recommended by the other bros. Lots of additional functions etc.

Else, if limited budget, can look for those with motion detection & internal battery (preferably those using mobile batt).

You gotta get the cam that's for the headunit, It just plugs right in and you control it via S100 headunit.

For the wiring..they give you plenty of wire to run up the A pillar, under the headliner and the only exposed wire is coming out by the rear view mirror...My cam is mount by the rear view. Ill have to post a pic up

Bought the G1W 2-3 months ago and plan to install it come spring...But how did you guys do the wiring for it? Ideally, I could pull down my roofliner a little and connect it to a power line that only is active when the car is on and running?

I don't want it powered 24/7 through cigarette lighter and I'd prefer to have no wires visible...
