Carbon Atlas Inlays, who has broken/cracked/damaged pieces....?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a cracked piece above my glove box, Audi wants 700+ dollars to replace this!!!!!! But, I can buy a whole set from BKS for 1100 I believe....

So my thinking was to get a few people that need new pieces, then we order the set, split the price, and all get the pieces we need, otherwise buying them individually is way too expensive, this is assuming I stumble upon 5 people who all have separate pieces

I have already contacted ocarbon and Matt says I can't repair my piece, called junk yards, parts dealers, ebay, you name it I have searched, this is my last hope before I buy a whole new set in piano black or a wood because that is only a few hundred bucks

if you need a certain piece chime in, I will try and put together an order

What really sucks is I bought this car without seeing it, paid for an inspection and they missed this, come to find it is insanely expensive for just this one piece

Me too same exact spot, that is probably why Audi rapes you on the cost of that piece because everyone needs it

Hi everyone, I have the exact same problem on my 2010. Cracked above the glove box. I was refused coverage under warranty and told 700 to replace the part. I called audi and complained but they did nothing. Perhaps we should send a letter with pictures. Sure seems like a defect.

Would this be covered under their 12-month, 20,000km "everything" warranty? If so, do you have a friend that has a 2013/2014 that you could trade with?

I've never understood why Audi only covers their interior pieces for 12 months. Even GM will cover interior pieces for 3 years (4 years on a Cadillac)

Cause Audi is a rip off and ppl are too soft and dont bitch and moan enough about bullshit like this and Audi gets away with it.. No excuse for a $50-60k car to have such an inferior piece. especially when its a $700 brand new piece that so many 2010 owners are having problems with. Wtf is 4yr/50k BUMPER TO BUMPER warranty? that carbon fiber piece is not even a wear and tear part, never gets touched, no abuse to it. This is why my B8.5 is gonna be my last Audi, I might sound like I cry and bitch like a baby all the time, but my money doesnt grow on a tree in my backyard and every penny is hard earned. Im not gonna let a so called "upscale " car company push me around and deny warranty for some of their bullshit crap quality products, like another member has stated, even GM is covering their interior pieces. Hondas back their trannies to 8 years and 109k cause they know its a known issue, but look at Audi, Td1 and denying warranty to 2010 S4 with a tune even though so many of them have issues with mechatronic issues and waterpump and thermostat issues.

I have to say I agree with a lot of what you said.. For arguments sake, and for the sake of this thread, i'll just leave it at that :P

With regards to the CF piece itself, it's only worth ~$15 max (and this is being generous..) at fabrication.. There's really no way to justify these carbon options from the dealer when you're familiar with the work/process involved in constructing them. That said, I'm still very curious to see how it cracked.. Having worked with composites for nearly 10 years, this is certainly surprising.

Lexus may not be the most fun car to drive now but when they learn to build cars that are fun to drive or perform on par I will be the first to jump to Lexus as their service is by far superior to any of the German brands. They really treat their customers like luxury car buyers instead of criminals.

Those of you that have cracked pieces, are you in mostly cold weather places?

Seems like a lot of you have cracked dash pieces? Do we know if the HVAC vent runs directly behind it (I'm assuming the vents from the middle channel across to the passenger side)?

Can someone post some pictures of their cracked pieces?

I have a different issue. I have the SS trim with Paino black trim and several small scratches by the passenger side (wife :( ) Anyone know if Maguire Stratch X or something else might buff those out (The scratches are int he clear coat and can't be felt with the fingers)... I was consider buying a new trim piece after market, but the prices are just too much!

If the scratches can be felt by hand, you'll probably need to wetsand them and buff them out. I don't think simply rubbing Scratch X into them will get it out.

I never understood this part, I had a brand new 08 IsF and during the time that I had it, I would go online and see the reviews about IsF vs this and that and realized that alot if not All " car mags and enthusiast" say the IsF outperformed, out cornered, and out accelerated an Audi Rs4.

Didn't know this was a common problem. Trims in the US are terribly expensive compared to Europe. If anyone needs individual pieces of any trim type just shoot over a PM or email with details of what you need: [email protected]

Mine just cracked in the past month. We've had a couple real cold spells here in MA. It definitely wasnt there a month ago and I had it on my to-do list to call the dealer to get it fixed when I was bringing it in for a new key (another reaming but I only have 1). F'n bs that its not covered and certainly not paying 7 bills to fix it. I'll live it with is I guess but it's mickey mouse that its not covered as its certainly a defect that some many of us cold weather region owners are experiencing it and getting screwed.

If it cracked on itself without you causing any damage to it, I'd take it back to Audi and demand to have it replaced under warranty, as it is clearly a defective party. F that.

I saw it the day I bought the car but didn't think my decision should hinge on a small crack around the quattro badge. For someone with OCD when it comes to my car it does bother me though. As for how it happened, I couldn't tell you it was the driver before me unfortunately.

I'm fairly certain it's from the heat being on in the car. My guess is there is an HVAC vent that travels behind the piece from the center vents to the side passenger vent.

The extreme cold from the winter, followed by rapid heat for short periods of time from the heater causes the piece to expand and contract repeatedly in short time frames (carbon fiber and epoxy are dynamic, they change shape slightly depending on the ambient temperature). Since the wood/metal plate that the carbon is laminated expands at a different rate than the carbon and epoxy when the temperature changes (they have different coefficients of thermal expansion) there is stress on the part when there are quick changes in temperature. Eventually, this stress causes the part to fail and it cracks.

This is why I think the cracking only happens on the dash and not on the doors and shifter, as the dash piece is the only one with heating behind it. The other parts don't expand and contract so quickly, so they don't have any issues.

We post cure our parts in an oven to make them stronger so they do not suffer the same fate.
