    U.S. RS5 top speed?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am looking forward to getting my RS5 in mid to late December. I am trying to find what the actual top speed is for the U.S. RS5. I read a couple reviews saying 174, others say it is limited to 155. I have also read that you can request to have the limiter off to get the 174 top speed in the U.S.. What is truth?

Not exactly sure if you can get it ordered or delivered that way due to US regulations, but you can always have APR or another vendor tune the ECM/SW to remove the limiter... that will likely cause a TD1 though, which is why I have not pursued yet. my first track day with the RS isn't for a few months so I have not fully investigated... will keep my eye on this post for feedback. hope I am wrong and can remove the limiter with no impact to warranty etc...

So wait, there's really a limiter in the US at 155?

If you look up coolhandluke's threads (rip), he got the APR tune to remove the limiter and did a 2mile strait run. He made a vid during it but I don't remember the top speed he hit.

Top track speed is electronically limited to 174mph according to Audi USA. Superswiss who had the opportunity to run his US spec car on the autobahn and others who have tracked their cars should be able to verify this.

Yep, 174 mph it is. It actually goes even a bit higher, but that might just be the inaccuracy of the speedometer.

So, it is 174 then? Is that available "upon request" or is this just how they come from Germany? Reason I am asking is quite a few articles I have read say limited to 155 in US but available to 174 upon request.

Audi USA stated multiple times that the top speed of the US car is 174.

"Upon request" is for Germany and other countries. US spec cars come standard with the 174 mph top speed "option".

I'd like to see what it can actually do flat out. I know a Stage 1 S4 can hit 190+. That is with the limiter removed obviously.

Holy thread resurrection! I have searched a little for this answer but can anyone answer exactly how the limiter is removed? The previous owner of my car posted on Instagram a pic on them doing 177 but has also previously told me it has not been tuned. Can anyone confirm that removing the plug on the engine coding socket under the ECU method is valid for 2014 RS5? If so then this is likely how he removed the limiter. But I wanted to confirm. Thanks!

I’m confident my Stage 2 RS5 could hit 180-200mph. I’ve personally hit 160mph in mine.

A couple years ago, I was 1 of 4 RS5’s (but the only Cab) & several other Audi/car enthusiasts who embarked on a trip to “Mexico” for some very spirited driving. I stopped @ 164,(kph of course) 3 of the other RS5 continued & maxed out 175-177 (speedo inaccuracy?). However, 1 S6 in our group was tuned & ate everyone up on the acceleration & flat out speed(s). That driver (IIRC) on a separate occasion in “Mexico”, was able to photo a shot of his tach/speedo & was @ 197. He’s since moved on to an RS7 which I also think is tuned. We’ve not met up since then for another “road trip”, but I’m hoping maybe in the fall. 🤞

My SKN Stage 2 allows for 300km/ph within their TUV certificate. I have a JHM Stage 1 ECU and think it’s reasonably close to that same type of re-mapping though I don’t believe JHM makes a certified statement of new speed limiter. Of the two I’m running the SKN and Milltek exhaust since that’s what I started with at
1000 miles. Fast forward to 2020 and I think I’d be with JHM Stage 2 and absolutely install the additional cooling available in either case I’m a milltek longer term fan. My 2013 has 88,000 miles over all it’s been one really enjoyable daily
    Automobile.

We were all out in the more rural parts of “Mexico”, there were two B8.5 RS5s, one B9 RS5 and a Camaro 1SS. We all hit 160mph+, but I let up because I couldn’t trust the Camaro 1SS’s braking distance as we were rapidly approaching a turn lol. I’d be eager to let it loose on a full strait.

Curious as to how your (our older RS5’s) tuned car performed relative to the newer RS5 in your group. Noticeable difference or ~ the same? We had several different Audi’s in our group, a SC Mustang, V10 S6 & a couple S4’s as well as a tuned 2.0T Audi. The tuned S6 was the clear winner in overall HP/acceleration/top speed but the RS5’s had the advantage in the “twistees”. It made for a very interesting trip, incredibly enjoyable.

My RS5 on Stage 2 is pretty quick, looking at close to 500hp. Coming from a V10 S6 (C6) JHM Stage 1, I’m very surprised the heavy set S6 was able to beat out any of the RS5s. I’m assuming y’all were all stock at this time? I’m glad to see the S6 hold its own regardless - that owner has probably put his whole life’s savings into it by now LOL!

    EDIT:
The tuned B8.5 RS5 to B9 is bridging the gap, but I would say the B9 would eventually pull away. There’s still too much of a tq difference since the B9 is turbo’d. We need a reliable supercharger, and I’m certain we’ll beat even tuned B9s.

The tuned S6 was/is an absolute monster & just pulled/ran away from us on the long straights. Humbling but we were much better suited for the rest of the drive, turns, braking, hard cornering etc. Back then, the only aftermarket performance option was the CF intake from Eventuri & an exhaust or 2. PedroRS5 had the intake & was the closest to staying w/the S6 on the straightest portions of our trip, but even his efforts fell short. As you mentioned, the TQ difference was incredibly obvious, just wish Audi would have put the 4.0T in the RS5 & brought that to market. I’m sure they knew that if they did, enthusiastic drivers would develop tunes & destroy the vaunted position of the R8 as the pinnacle of performance. How could the then justify the massive difference in price? A 4 seat GT cruiser outperforming their best 2 seat sports car, they couldn’t allow it. Like you, I’m patiently waiting for the SC option & hoping it provides similar performance to or better than the tuned 4.0T. 🤞
