2010 B8 Audi S4
1st known mechatronics unit repair at purchase:
Went to look at the used vehicle, drove it hard for a good test drive “Gearbox Malfuntion, you may continue driving” warning came on dash.
Didn’t drive harsh or anything out of normal shifting conditions.
Negotiated with used car dealership to have unit replaced at no additional cost before taking delivery of the vehicle.
2nd mechatronics repair ongoing. (DIY)
Currently working on repairing the unit myself after “Gearbox Malfuntion, you may continue driving” and “TPMS (Tire pressure! System Malfuntion) warnings lit my shit up again.
No reverse, only 1st, 3rd, 5th & 7th gear available, hard/delayed shifting... put away and cry a little every time I walk past it for couple weeks.
Eventually I decided to drop the unit before purchasing any parts because didn’t want to believe it failed again....
I first ran a full diagnostic with VagCom:
8028 - Valve 4 in Transmission Part 2
P174F 00 [237] - Electrical malfunction
After some research concluded mechatronics unit or valve solenoid went bad.
Dropped the mechatronics unit and tested all the solenoid valves with multimeter (Ohm resistance) all O.K.
Focused on the N440 solenoid as a diagram I found online names that as “Valve 4 in gear train half 2” close enough to actual fault code. Solenoid was O.K. tho.
Removed the wiring “harness” (plastic crap), did simple continuation check with multimeter on each connector Pin & solenoid contact metal “prongs” and found one fault.
Double checked with 12v batt and a light up light 💡 circuit tester, confirmed bad circuit.
Wanna guess which connection? Yup, matching the connection to N440 solenoid.
