Finally got my car back from the shop. So it turns out it's not the mechatronic but the Gear Sensor Module instead:

    https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...le/0b5927321l/

This is still a $3700 fix because they have to drop the transmission and open up the case to repair it. The revised part has a "L". Car is driving super smooth and shifting fast like normal. Hopefully this is it for awhile.

Bumping this thread.... it looks like the 8051 Selector Lever Sensor (Gear Sensor Module) along with P179E has hit me too.
    2010 with 94,000 kms.

And I was just about to go in for the simple Mechactronics repair (8030 Cooling Oil Valve with P179D).
Have all the parts ready and the labor for that repair is not that crazy.

But now with the Gear Sensor error I am looking at 15+ hours of labor and a TON more parts.
My independent shop is going to remove and needs to send the tranny to Audi to do the repair as they do not have the proper Jig and Fixture to do the job properly.
I don't think anyone in my area has the Jig and Fixture other than the dealerships.

Getting all the parts listed in the TSB 2032211/1 from www.audiusaparts.com as they have incredible prices.
    Especially compared to Canadian dealers.

Hoping to keep the entire repair under $4k.
Trying contacts at Audi head office and with my local service manager but I am flagged TD1.
    What a nightmare.

Owning and modding an Audi is a love/hate relationship.... but I still love her.

Is the gear sensor module failure a somewhat common occurrence? This makes me wonder how many dealers have just replaced the entire tranny because of negligence or laziness. Not so bad if under warranty but if not I would not be happy

Still rare for B8.5s? I spoke with an Audi mechanic at the dealer and an independent shop said this was fixed on 2013+.

This is what happened to me, the first dealership wanted to replace the whole mech for 8k or tranny for 11k. I went to another that correctly diagnosed the issue

My shop said they never seen this before. They done a lot of mechatronics on higher mileage S4's, like approaching 100k miles. My car had about 50k and well maintained.

Not a lot of shops are willing to do this job because they don't have to right tools and if they did try to buy the tools from audi, it's gonna cost them $$$$. They're not gonna spend that kind of money rare jobs like this. I know this because I called another shop to get another quote and they straight up said "NO" lol. I use a handful of shops and luckily one of them was willing to tackle the job. The high cost is straight up labor. Some of the parts were ridiculous, like the $100 sealing paste.

If anyone is in LA area with this issue get your car towed to Ingolstadt West in Canoga Park, they'll fix it right up!

I have the same sensor error. Audi is helping out. I was wondering if I should push to replace Mechatronics at the same time or if the two problems are completely unrelated. I never had any issue with how the transmission ran, but I did get an error.

You have the gear sensor error? What year is the car? And what do you mean Audi is helping out?

Do you know the specific code?
    Is the car driveable?
Some people lose gears or the car tells you not to drive it in the display.

What is Audi going to do for you on a 2011?

Replaced the gear selector sensor AND the mechatronic in one shot.

Even changed the sport diff and axle fluid.

    Silky smooth and NO CODES!
I honestly feel it drives a little better.
Especially in stop and go traffic. It doesn't lunge forward as much as it used to?
Otherwise the shifts are the same.
It was a huge pill to swallow. I hope this is the end of my DSG issues.

Hi. I am driving a 2010 S4 with 94K miles on. I have this for almost 9 years now. A few months back I have a "Gearbox malfunction, you can continue driving" warning on the dash. I scan using carista app and give me fault codes 8052 and 8030. Definitely the gear sensor is bad. However I have noticed that the warning goes away after engine off of about 2 hours and then comes back again after about 30 mins. of driving. I suspect heat is causing this malfunction?
I went to the dealer and quoted me about $7K for the repair. I'm out of warranty so this will be out of my pocket. I thought it won't be worth it to spend that much repair cost on a 8 yr old car so I decided just to ride this out with CODES. I been driving it for almost 3 months now with ON and OFF and using it on my daily commute. Commute miles is about 40 per day. I experienced occasional rough shifting and jerking coming from stop (which I think S4 B8 common thing). Other than this it feels normal driving. Unless I find a more cost-effective way of repairing this, I plan to use it more this way and I think worst can happen is I go on limp mode. What are your thoughts?

Sure until your car won't move and you're stuck on the freeway endangering yourself and others.

When mine finally went, I just prayed I didn't get hit. Thankfully, I was already on the way to the dealer when the whole thing finally died.

I just got the dreaded “Gearbox Malfunction: You May Continue Driving” warning and the P179E code (sensor for gear electrical fault) on my 2010 S4.

(I also got the following codes:
P10a4 regulating flap for intake air mechanical malfunction
P1130 long term fuel trim multiple, bank 2 system too lean
    P179F sensor for gear malfunction)

I’m already part of the Class Action Lawsuit listed on this thread dealing with the mechatronics / gear sensor module / transmission issues that have plagued many B8 owners.

From what I’ve read, most mechanics do not have the tools and equipment to drop the tranny and replace the gearbox sensor module, and thus this needs to be done at an Audi dealership.

Does anyone in the Chicago area have experience with this? Can anyone recommend a specific dealership? Are there any Audi mechanics here that do work in the side who could tackle this?

    Thank you!

Have been dealing with DSG issues for past couple of months on a 2011 S5 Cabriolet at first just gearbox malfunction and TPMS warning light with no impact to performance, but hard 2-1 downshifts but only when trans warms up, fast forward one month and 500 miles later gearbox malfunction and loss of R,2,4,6 but cleared after restart another month and about 500 miles gearbox malfunction loss of R,2,4,6 but will not clear. Car was immobilized and not drivable, Ordered Mechatronic Repair kit from ECS and pulled mech unit out in the driveway on jackstands last night actually not a bad job at all have done much more difficult tasks. Do not understand why Audi charges so much in labor for a mech unit replacement. With lift should only take about an hour start to finish as it took me about 3 hours on jack stands in the driveway at night.
Anyways pulled mech unit and tested all solenoids on the unit all tested out ok at around 5 OHMs but noticed resistance on the old harness that I had taken off and it ends up this harness is the root of all evil when it comes to these DSG issues in my opinion. The harness or circuit board or whatever you want to call it is shorting out causing the issues but the reason I think that it seems most cases are just slightly different is because the harness on the mech unit is shorting in different locations causing it to look like different components failing. I had no reverse and the car would barely move before I put it on jack stands I completed the mech repair and put it back together and amazing the car went back to normal after indicating all sorts of internal failures including a stuck shift fork, and other internal malfunctions.
So after spending 3 hours on my back covered in dirty DSG ATF fluid (plus side my hair is super soft lol) and massive amounts of profanity and obscene gestures, I pull the car down and all the errors are magically gone because of a $500 piece of plastic with some connections . After driving for a little while today and letting the tranny get up to operating temps guess what returns ...... the infamous 2 to 1 whiplash inducing downshift. but after what I noticed last night on the unit itself there is another plastic harness that does not come with the repair kit that houses the Gear position sensors and hydraulic pressure sensors and I can almost guarantee that is where this 2 to 1 harsh downshift is coming from.
This was the very first Audi I have ever owned, the wife wanted it and I absolutely love the way the car drives and performs but I am not sure that the experience is worth the trouble, have spent more time working on the car than driving it since I bought it 6 months ago. no reason this much trouble at 90k Miles so as of right now my opinion stands that Audi's and VW's and the whole lot produced by the VW Corporation is complete junk and that is my personal and professional opinion. I will be returning back to Lexus on my next purchase. Any other ideas or experiences would be welcome to prevent me from having to purchase a $2300 -Part Only mech unit would be greatly appreciated around $3400 at North Atlanta Audi and no offer of assistance from there either when they diagnosed the bad unit before I did the repair kit that fixed 95% of the problems.
    My apologies needed to vent.

    2nd Mechatronics repair.

    2010 B8 Audi S4
1st known mechatronics unit repair at purchase:
Went to look at the used vehicle, drove it hard for a good test drive “Gearbox Malfuntion, you may continue driving” warning came on dash.
Didn’t drive harsh or anything out of normal shifting conditions.
Negotiated with used car dealership to have unit replaced at no additional cost before taking delivery of the vehicle.
    2nd mechatronics repair ongoing. (DIY)
Currently working on repairing the unit myself after “Gearbox Malfuntion, you may continue driving” and “TPMS (Tire pressure! System Malfuntion) warnings lit my shit up again.
No reverse, only 1st, 3rd, 5th & 7th gear available, hard/delayed shifting... put away and cry a little every time I walk past it for couple weeks.
Eventually I decided to drop the unit before purchasing any parts because didn’t want to believe it failed again....
I first ran a full diagnostic with VagCom:
    8028 - Valve 4 in Transmission Part 2
    P174F 00 [237] - Electrical malfunction
After some research concluded mechatronics unit or valve solenoid went bad.
Dropped the mechatronics unit and tested all the solenoid valves with multimeter (Ohm resistance) all O.K.
Focused on the N440 solenoid as a diagram I found online names that as “Valve 4 in gear train half 2” close enough to actual fault code. Solenoid was O.K. tho.
Removed the wiring “harness” (plastic crap), did simple continuation check with multimeter on each connector Pin & solenoid contact metal “prongs” and found one fault.
Double checked with 12v batt and a light up light 💡 circuit tester, confirmed bad circuit.
Wanna guess which connection? Yup, matching the connection to N440 solenoid.
    https://goo.gl/images/XS7NUJ
Waiting on ECS tunning to holla back with a hopeful “Labor Day Discount” for Mechatronics Repair Kit.

Hope this helps someone else. Send direct msg if you need therapy.

I’m guessing it’s coming, I had a scare a few days before where I had to pull over, restarted the car and it went away but then it came back on (losing reverse and gear) and didn’t go away. I’m just gonna suggest you take it slow bcuz when it goes I’ve read that you could damage the actual Gearbox if you’re going fast... I would most definitely not go on the highway or long trips.

But is it the sensor or the mech unit?

Also, last week I had the codes pulled on the transmission and nothing was there after the error came and went...

I’m just gonna suggest you take it slow bcuz when it goes I’ve read that you could damage the actual Gearbox if you’re going fast... I would most definitely not go on the highway or long trips.
I had very similar issues a month or two after I bought my cpo S4. The tpms/gearbox warnings seemed to occur Everytime after I washed my car. I thing that's purely coincidental. Brought it to the dealership and they kept it for two weeks to test. Once they replicated the issue, they just replaced the transmission. Seems good so far. It's been 2 months.

Its making me truly hate this car... its really bad... between the cost to repair and how it makes the car shift, if I wasnt going to take a massive hit, id trade it in tomorrow!

Anyone having issues with their tranny have issues with launch control? EPL is telling me that since my launch control is holding at 3800 instead of the stock 3000 my mech unit may be on the way out. I have no other symptoms other than this. Car still cuts 3.8 0-60 no issues.

Just had this repair done recently. Driving from Northern California down to Anaheim area. About 6 hours in got the TPMS malfunction and a gearbox malfunction codes. Car has just under 90k miles. Bought at 77k miles so not aware of any previous repairs.

I got the "Gearbox Malfunction/TPMS" light. I took it to the dealer, and they replaced ONLY the Circuit Board. Then today, I got the warning light again.

I got that message at 69k miles and had to purchase a whole new transmission. The new transmission failed with same message 45 days and 1200 miles later and they had to apply the repair kit (circuit board) to the mechatronic. Then a year later got the same message again and they had to replace the entire mechatronic. Worst car I have ever owned. Join the class action, this is happening all over the place.
