    Wiper Length, arm and blade...?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,

So I just swapped out my wiper transmission and after reinstall I have noticed that the wiper coverage doesn't seem right. I had some issues with the transmission start/stopping in the middle of the windshield but I fixed that by adjusting the linkage and wipers to the neutral positions. I am simply talking about how well the blades clear the windshield area.

From what I can tell there are 2 blade lengths, 21" and 22". There are also two lengths for the arm that holds the blade, one long one short...

    What is the correct combination?

    Right now I have:

Driver side: long arm, 21" blade
Passenger side: short arm, 22" blade

    Is this correct?

    Thanks

I just picked up a set from Autozone they said 21" for both passenger and driver side. Hope that helps.

Yeah it would seem most sets are sold as two 21" blades, not sure how I ended up with a 21" and a 22"...

Still unsure which arm is the driver side and which is the passenger side.

The driver's side is 21" and the passenger side is 22"

    No, the length of driver and passenger side wipers are different;

    Driver Side(Left)- P/N:4B0955425- 22"
    Passenger Side(Right)- P/N:8D1955425A- 21"

I see from above that you have the wrong one on driver side, you should put 22" wiper on the driver side.

Also, the driver side wiper arm is longer than the passenger side arm. Hope this helps..

If you're having issues with new wiper blades not wiping cleanly there's a good chance that the arms need replacing. The arms have springs in them and keep a certain load so they wiper doesn't streak or skip.

Once the springs start to stretch out and loose tension the wiper blades ability to clear the windshield suffers.

I put shorter blades on mine than the books recommend. I think I run 20's on both sides. Quality over quantity kind of thing.

While we are on the subject, does anybody else think that the B5 wiper transmission does not have enough THROW? Like it needs a few more degrees of angle from stop to stop? I notice this in winter, and especially on the driver's side. If I adjust the wipers down low (so they don't look stupid when off), then it doesn't wipe far enough toward the A-pillar. This results in snow piling up there and making my A-pillar effectively 12 inches wide. Okay, maybe that's exaggerating, but it is dangerous. And if I adjust it the other way, then it looks WELL stupid because they sit so high up on the glass when the wipers are "parked".

I would eventually like to modify the transmission linkage to get more angle out of it. Just shortening the lever arm that attaches to the motor should do the trick. But how much to do is the question.

I've noticed this many times in the winter here, especially when it snows. I actually thought it was some issue with my wiper motor not moving all the way up, but never took it serious..:)
