Automatic Transmission jerks when it downshifts from 5th to 4th

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
ever since i got the car, i noticed that after you drive for like 20 minutes, the transmission will jerk one time when you're slowing down and coming from 5th to 4th, and sometimes has a slight pause then a jerk when it shifts from 4th to 5th - but that's kind of rare. another thing i noticed is that when i drive the car past 4,000 RPM's, it starts jerking sooner - so i'm guessing that something's probably wore out since the previous owner never changed the fluid (it was pitch black and came out like water) after 180,000 miles.

i planned on doing a manual swap eventually, but just not this soon - so i kind of wanna see if this problem is fixable since i don't feel like going through the trouble of doing the swap just yet. between school and work right now, i just don't have the time for doing a swap. so yea, thanks in advance for anyone that knows how to fix this.

You should be able to find more by searching...but I think I had the same problem as you and it was the N91 solenoid. Whenever I would slow down I had a pretty violent jerk. After a bunch of searching I figured it was the N91 solenoid and that fixed my problem. You have to remove the tranny fluid pan but it was a relatively easy fix. It's been running great ever since I replaced that.

Hmmmmm.. i'm almost tempted to pull the trigger on a manual swap. I would really hate to change the n91 and then have it end up being the valve body, but it does sound like the n91. Such a tough call since i really wanna do the swap, but dont have the time to. I'll end up having to pay my mechanic to do it $60/hour. Of course i would source all of the parts for him to keep the cost down.

I'm having the same problem and am debating a manual swap to. I found a valve body on eBay for ~$150 but it arrived damaged so I'm out of luck right now.

Nope go right ahead. I am too tempted to do a swap, but my tranny is pretty healthy now so it can definitely wait. Let me know some of the prices you find on the tranny + other parts.

has anyone else found the N91 solenoid to be the culprit? i've been extremely busy lately, so i haven't really had the time to figure out what i want to do yet.

so it looks like i'm going to give the car to my wife since the N91 solenoid isn't that big of a deal, but at the same time, I'm looking to order up the part and get this finally done. I'm not overly swamped with work/college at the moment, so I'm going to order up the part now. is this the right piece? the link says it will work with the 5HP19, 5HP19FL, 5HP19FLA, so i'm 99% sure this is what I need to get. any help is definitely appreciated.
