Hanging Subwoofers from Rear Deck. Possible??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ive searched and searched but havent found what I am looking for, but maybe because it hasnt been done.

Is it possible to ditch the rear deck 6.5" bLose speakers, and hand 8" or 10" infinite baffle subwoofers in their place?

I am looking to maximize trunk space and get quality sound, but dont need big boom. My ideal setup would look like this:

    Front Doors: 5.25" components
    Rear Doors: 6.5" coaxials
Rear Deck: 2x10" subs (infinite baffle)

I had JL stealthboxes in the e36 M3 that had somethign similar, and while 8" IB subs arent strong hitters, I found that the rear glass rolled the sound forward for a bigger than expected punch.

Can anyone comment on the rear deck limitations to this? I dont mind enlarging the opening but I dont want to take a sawzall to it! Adapater plate to space above or below the deck would be preferred.

My car has a whole box hanging from the deck, and besides this, iirc the deck is a single piece of metal with an oval cut-out, so the depth of the woofer doesn't really matter. If you want something wider than this, you'll have to cut a significant amount material which is reinforced because that's also where the seat belts and child safety systems anchor to.

    Sweet....Any pics?

If its one big cutout, then size wont matter per say, but diameter would. Can you fit 10s within the cutout without having to widen the "oval"?

I would consider 1 big box, but that is a lot of weight, and I am content with infinite baffle

I'm planning on ripping out the box this weekend, i'll be sure to take pictures for you and get under shots of the subs.

I was contemplating this as well only with JL Audio's shallow mount subs in the place of the 6.5" ones from bose.

Personally, just keep the rear deck speakers, make a custom sub cutout where the disk changer is and profit.

Still retain everything stock(or aftermarket audio POLK FTW), and get a sub that takes up no space.

From past experience in my 2.8, let the fiberglass dry longer than expected unless you want your car to smell like resin for a week. Sure did "lighten" up my morning/head when I got in my car.

I kept the rear deck for some JL AUDIO mids and went with a 12" JL AUDIO W6 series sub in custom box which still gives me some trunk space. Got the amps mounted right behind the rear seats to the box. Hope this helps your thread at all.

I did 2 10" on my friends b5 mounted to the rear deck. I'm trying to pull up a picture but my web server is down. Only thing is I had to cut off the rear car seat anchors on top. I made a custom grill for the top.

Very clean. May be a littler bigger than Id like. Any pics with the seats folder down to give an idea of how much depth it takes up? I was planning to mount my amps to the backs of the seats similar to that

I have nothing more than an idea. This might not ever happen.

Plan is to frame around the outside to make a level mounting surface, then put a big board (not sure if starboard or birch ply) with a hole in it.

    Here is the concept;

Yea I am thinking similar, tho 2 subs off to the sides.

Something like this (unsure of amp at the moment):

Yes the B5 had stealthboxes for the pre-facelift variant I believe, and then they discontinued it. I read the reason why, but I forget...The guy in the linked thread obviously upgraded his speakers so thats why they are kickers.

If there was one for sale, id buy it and modify it to work, but that option is probably would take longer and be similar work to making a custom "rack"

No sorry, I made mine myself and then wrapped it in felt. Looked factory and didn't take up any space.

ive seen it in an s4 before, cant seem to find the pics of it though. sub bouncing off rear window would make for nice sound, also the trunk volume would be a lot and make for its own "box" of sorts.

Ok i was able to find the pics i took, i did this 11 years ago! Basically i cut out the rear deck to fit the speakers then put a piece of mdf under the shelf to support it then dynamated it so it wouldn’t vibrate.

This is.. exactly what's in my car, down to the amp being screwed into the seats.

How the hell are you supposed to remove this shit?

Also.. if anyone wants to buy it. PM.

Thanks for the pics! So you completely replaced the factory deck, not just modified it to add speakers. Any pics from a completely view from trunk to get a feel for size?

That must rattle the shit out of your back glass.

Just having a 12" sub in my A4 broke the seal on my rear window after years of bass, I could only image what two speakers pointed at it would do

My S4 has the stock bose system. i'm really missing my polk's as of now.

@evilsmurf you can fit any 8 inch woofer in the stock woofer location in the deck.
