Best coil for high boost AMB engine?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
What version of the new style coil is best for a high boost AMB engine?
    Part number/suffix?
    Best source?

Stock coils have 110k miles, and I am experiencing misfires at 20+ psi on at least one coil (colder NGK BKR7E plugs with 0.030 gap).

    Edit: My 2003 B6 has the 06A 905 115 D coils

    Revision "D".

People will tell you to get FSI Coils, but those WILL crack and you will be back in the same boat you are in now.

To date none of my TFSI coils have ever cracked.

While I have seen post here about the issue on certain TFSI coils...there are those TFSI coils that do not crack.

The TFSI coils that come from a Mk VII GTI (with the long plastic cover) seems to crack on some people, but I've found the red FSI coils that come from the B8 A4 2.0T have been very reliable (no plastic cover to crack). Provides a smoother idle and smoother overall operation as it goes through the RPM range. Very happy customer with these.

If you go with TFSI coils, get the appropriate spark plugs to take advanatage of the hotter spark. NGK BKR7E-11 (copper) or NGK BRR7EIX-11 (iridium) offer the larger gap.

    Its 2013....

On 8/2013 I installed 06e905115e with NGK Iridiums.

So far the 06e905115e offer the best seat of the pants performance in my 1.8t.

As Erie mantioned certain part number TFSI coils have been known to crack...

You should search the 06C905115M part number here and see if those are them.

Good to know guys. I bought mine when the spacers were first introduced, i picked the model I did b/c that is what was recommended at the time and was also thought to be the most powerful OE version out there. Mine never saw the car with out spacers, i had the plugs gapped at .040, i noticed no performance change, and they still cracked. (Lots of speculation about the cause of the cracking at the time)... My plan was to run them till the car actually started missing, then to pitch them and go back to my "D" models.

My idle smoothed out and the car runs really well with these coils and the proper plugs pregapped to the spec for the coil. I have a motoza tune and no issues.

    - non cracking
    - strongest spark (unless all those 'new' coils are electrically the same).

My claims that idle/performance/etc did not change was new revision Ds with new plugs gapped at .028 vs new MK6s with new plugs gapped at .040.

You guys that saw a difference, were you comparing an old setup w/ old plugs to a new mk6 setup w/ new plugs? If this is the case then you should very much see a difference. If it was new vs new like I did, then I guess I did not get the same result. Which is about par for the course.

FR5DTC plugs were hands down the best plugs I tried. They are copper and about 1.5 steps colder than stock. I was able to get a hair more timing (2 or so degrees it seemed) out of them vs BKR7EIX plugs.

From what I read somewhere along the way, the NGK "IX" plugs are about half a step warmer than their copper brothers due to the fine-wire tip. So a "7" IX would be something like a "6.5" Copper. If i was to try iridiums again, I would probably look for an BKR8EIX. (If they exist)

I've run the BKR8EIX as well, which are not available in a -11 variant (1.1mm / .044" gap), and they did not perform as well as the 7EIX-11

Go knock on wood, quick! Lol.

Mine were from Issam's thread too. I didn't drive my car much so it took longer for mine to crack, but like so many others, they eventually did. I know Dan's did too, and he also gave up and went back to traditionals. I used to give him hell about it... Then one day *womp*womp* mine did the same. (IIRC he did not feel a change in performance either)

Not trying to actually deter anyone, just sharing my experiences.

I'm running 26 psi with these plugs. I have the spacers that Issam first offered. I used to run the copper plugs (BRK7E-11), but decided to try the iridium plugs. They've done great for a full year. I plan on sticking with these plugs and will replace every 30k miles instead of every 5k miles with the copper versions.

^ got it. That was the problem then. Mine were "H"es.

Good to know a reliable CP was found. If I still owned the car I'd probably give them a whirl.

...all water under the bridge now.
