RE: pocket squares, you can color contrast just not for starters....so not sure if you disagree about that or the folding part....just figured for him he should keep it simple and go with a white square
Not a fan of the monogram style. Otherwise, looking sharp.

don't mean to steal the thunder. However, I got a Calvin Klein Slim Fit black suit this weekend at Macy's for $280 out the door with alterations. Going to a semi-black tie wedding this weekend, should be slick. Gonna rock the white shirt, white pocket square, black bowtie

French Cuff - doesn't use a button... folds back on itself and uses a cuff link.... but then you need to purchase multiple sets of cuff links to match with your tie.

Right. Not so much a "rule", but more that you want to be unbuttoned when sitting just so the buttons aren't getting pulled on.

I wouldn't say multiple sets. You can get away with 1 or 2 sets of links in neutral styles that will work with different ties. Although if you wear french cuffs everyday, probably a good idea to have some more options.

First question- Shitty drywall job. I don't own my house. Only rent for obvious reasons if you read my other thread

Second question- As far as I know, the lack of tie means casual, so no button required. It's casual

Not necessarily. Out west the high finance guys don't wear ties but it's still considered business formal. Hell, just look up Tom Ford... Granted it's Tom Ford and he can do what he wants but there are pics of him in a double breasted tux and three piece suit with no tie and the buttons done...

The button rule is a case by case basis. If you're interviewing then the top button standing, none while sitting makes a degree of sense. Could even keep it buttoned the whole time. But if you're just hanging out and aren't wearing a tie, I would keep it buttoned anyway just because it looks casual but put together.

Fair enough, but I would still follow what Fitz said haha. Just keep the top button buttoned... always. And if you're wearing a vest, the bottom button never gets buttoned no matter how many buttons the vest is.

I personally would have suggested paying more $$ and getting a better quality suit that will look better and last longer. But you're in school and I can fully understand going the less expensive route. When I first needed suits I went to Jos A Bank and bought BOG3. I wore 1 for the occasion I needed. Then I didn't need them for a while until now and I just gave them all away unworn because the quality was cheap, the fabric was bad, and they looked like shit.

All the advice so far has been pretty good. Fit > anything else. A cheap suit with perfect fit will look better than a $4,000 bespoke suit with poor fit. Most important factor of suit fit is the shoulders. Find a jacket where the shoulder fit perfect and tailor from there.

Post a better picture so we can help with the fit. It's hard to tell, but the sleeves look long. You also need to make sure your dress shirts fit properly. The dress shirt sleeve should hit right at the base of your 3rd thumb joint. The suit sleeve should be 1.5cm above that.

In any profession that requires suits, these little details are critical and do get noticed. Now you need a quality pair of dress shoes.

You mentioned earlier that you like pocket squares but cant wear them. Why not!? Be confident and you can wear anything. The key is to understand the rules of suiting properly, and then you can break the rules if you wish. But you need to first understand when your breaking a rule and know that you're doing it on purpose for style.

Check out this websites blog. They sell MTM suits (made to measure) that are pretty good quality. More importantly, their blog might give you some insight to suit dressing.

This is a pretty good guideline for a properly fitted suit

For anyone looking for a quality MTM suit with a modern cut, with control of options for the build of the suit, I highly recommend this site:

The style you want is "Modern Fit"

If it is too snug, then get regular fit.

You want two button jackets, flat front pants, no pant cuffs, no vests, charcoal/dark gray color. You can also consider Taupe as a color.

You have the means to get a made-to-measure suit. Ask for a full canvas jacket, and make sure it's wool or horse hair. A jacket of that construction will last you a lifetime.

A medium gray, or charcoal would also be more appropriate for job interviews than the black suit.

I like Hugo Boss suits, they last a long time both in terms of quality and style. I have one that is 10 years old that still looks good. Had to replace a button here and there. Invest in a good suit. Not the time to be cheap. A good fitting suit can be the difference between getting or not getting a job. From the pic you showed, that is not a good fitting outfit.

+1 on the Hugo Boss. I have one that has been worn a lot and it still looks good. Fit isn't all that great for me but quality is top notch it seems.

Just picked up 2 new suits on Thursday. One gray-striped and one blue-striped. One more suit on the way; it's a sharkskin gray with a peak lapel. A bit modern for my tastes but after seeing it before alterations, I really like it. Also added 6 new shirts to my collection.

Anyone use a steamer? I'm considering picking one up for my shirts. I plan to have most of them dry cleaned but I have a few shirts that see the wash. I have an iron but I'm really getting sick of doing that every day and I feel like it really beats on the shirts even if I use it at a very low heat.

Does a steamer work well enough to ditch the iron?
