Anyone Replace Coil Pack with R8 Coil Pack?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Has anyone here replaced their OEM Coil Packs with the R8 OEM Coil Pack (06E-905-115-E)

I'd like to know if anyone noticed any difference and how easy it was to install them and if there is a DIY.

    I'm at 53k Miles (85k KMs)
On start up i feel some misfires that car shakes. New Engine Mounts, New Spark Plugs, Oil Change, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Pollen Filter. Still shakes on start up. I ordered the Coil Packs, I just dont want my dealer to TD1 for a coil pack...lol Might have them install it lol

I did it at 35k along with spark plugs and some BG 44k in the tank. Was noticeably smoother, but don't know how much of that was due to the R8 coils. It is super easy and there is a good DIY in the tech section of the forum

I did it after 3 failed coil packs in 2 months. Only difference I noticed was that I wasn't getting any more failed coil packs. Good enough for me.

At APR's suggestion, I replaced my coilpacks with the R8 packs and NGK plugs (PFR7S8EG gapped @ 0.028). Can't say I noticed any difference.

No issues with the dealer, too... they even commented on the "cool red" coilpacks. The local dealer is rather mod-friendly -- I like them.

We have them at a great price and do swaps on the TSI motor daily. There is improvement over the stock coil pack by using the R8 version (hotter spark, less misfires, greater combustion). The coils are plug and play and require no adapters or wiring changes.

At that price, the color alone is worth the "upgrade" to me.

If I had'nt changed mine with the Okada's I would've done this, no questions asked.

I read somewhere that its like ~80% more spark than stock. Okadas are 100% more spark that stock, but cost 7X as much!

Who you telling?!? LOL! As much as I love the upgrade, I would never pay full price for the Okadas! Luckily I got mine off the classifieds for a decent price.

I think I remember a thread about the spark differences as well. OP, you should definitely go for it!

I got my hands on R8 Coils :)
I'm still on my stock OEM coils (85,500Kms) 53k Miles on them. I have a Ross-Tech cable. Anyone want me to do any tests to see the difference?

I just replaced my stockers with the R8 coil packs, and PFR7S8EG NGK plugs. My car is 79k miles, and stock tune...

On warm up, it still a tiny but rough. Nothing I would call a "problem". Just a small hickup or 2. (But I did hope the tune up would get rid of it). When the idle drops to normal, it runs smooth as silk.

I do notice a difference in acceleration though. I'm not sure its faster, but there is definitely less hesitation. I believe I'm getting better MPG too (Still on first tank). We'll see how it goes.

$100 for coils and plugs, even if there was no noticeable change, why not do the R8 coils? You need a tune up anyway :)

Not really. Push the tab down with your finger until it clicks and then pull the connector out.

Agreed. Clips are easy to remove. "IF" you break a clip....then it's a pain in the butt to remove.

I swapped my stock ones out for the R8 coil packs when my stock one(s) failed at 73k miles. Also went with iridium plugs. I should be good for another 40k miles.

Any 1.8 b8 owners tried the r8 coil packs on their car? It doesn't state that 1.8 is compatible with the r8 coil packs, though 2.0 is clearly stated as compatible.

Just ordered the R8 coil packs from EuroCode and bought some NGK Iridium plugs (BKR5EIX-11). A couple of months ago my #3 coil pack failed at 79k. Would hesitate on start-up/idle rough then smooth out. Had it replaced at the dealer. This past week w/81k, car sputtered and misfired on a hard acceleration. Haven't hooked it up to Vagcom yet, but figured coils and plugs needed replacing. Coils should be here Thurs. Packs are easy to remove, just used two flat-heads, one to release the clip and the other slightly wedged between the coil pack and the harness to pry apart.

Has anyone cleaned the residue out of the spark plug and coil pack housing? Is it necessary?

Thanks for this thread, very helpful :D

    Here's my old plugs...

Why are these coil packs failing so early? It's an honest question, as I have 291,000 miles on my '01 4Runner (3.4 V6) and have never replaced them.

Just seems like the technology has existed for many years - so why the high failure rate?

Funny, I have, or had (just sold it a couple days ago) an 04 4Runner w/ 165k, 4.7 V8 AWD and never had one ignition or engine issue. Only issue with it was the electronic shift actuator which went bad at 145k and had to replace it. It's a great machine and so are these Audis, but it appears that the coil pack issue is a common problem at out of warranty mileage and Audi needs to address it. Yes, they are fairly inexpensive to replace and DIY, but I'm out a vehicle until my new ones come in.

Always carry one or two spare CPs in an Audi/VW. CP issues go back to the B6 days. They've gotten better since then but still not 100% reliable, esp on cars running more power.

UPS just delivered R8 Coil packs from EuroCode. Just installed them and NGK iridium plugs. What a difference! Super smooth and maybe it's because I haven't driven it in a few days, but my exhaust note seems smoother and a tad, just a tad quieter. No hesitation on start up or rough idle and definitely no sputtering and loss of power. This was the fix for me. Thanks for the info guys!

I am a little confused on this one... When I look in ETKA, the same coil pack part number (06e905115e) comes up for the A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, and R8. Aside from the color, is there really a difference?

It's a revised version as far as I can tell. I had my #3 replaced by my Audi shop with the OEM version not to long ago and all my issues still happened. Of course that was just one and when I pulled i it appeared to be fine. No oil residue left behind. I need to put more miles on these to see, but initially better performance. Others have had them on for a while and appear to have no issue. If I do with these, I will definitely post up. Price is good also.

    From HS Tuning:

For those of you looking for more technical data on these coil packs, here is what we've found so far with our bench ( oscilloscope ) testing:

    1) These coils can be used on your FSI/TSI engine at ANY level of modification. They function just as well on a dead stock car as a highly modified one.

    2) They are NOT the same coils with red housings. The secondary circuit on the R8 coils has a higher resistance (more windings) than the stock coils. In fact the secondary circuits were slightly closer to the Okadas we tested than the secondary of the stock coils.

    3) We tested these between 12 and 16 volts (remember if your alternator is charging properly the input will be right around 14). We tested them between 200 and 16,000rpm. The stock coils started to misfire at a much lower rpm than the R8's with a stock spark plug gapped @ .032".

    4) The spark was visibly brighter and more intense on the R8's when compared to the stock coils @ every rpm we compared in the stock rev range. We didn't compare anything under 1,000rpm.

    5) We were able to open the gap on the plugs much further with the R8's than the stock plug with out misfiring at the same rpm/voltage.

    6) Here is what we were finding as an AVERAGE on the secondary circuit for each of the coils.

    Stock: 3.3 M ohms
    5 cylinder coils: 4.75 M ohms
    R8's: 5.31 M ohms
    Okadas: 6.2 M ohms

Which NGK Iridium plugs are you guys going with on STOCK, non-modded, B8's ?? also what are you gapping at? Picking up a set of R8 coil packs to go with it.

I just installed BKR5EIX-11. Some guys use the 7EIX. I gapped at .028. I feel with my APR setup and Coil packs, .028 is best. OEM gapping is .032.

I bought some Plugs and R8 Coil Packs from HS Tuning (Thanks for the good price). I am APR Stage 2 Tuned, I feel the dealer just threw them in and didn't even care to gap them properly and I told them the proper gap. I still have a shake on startup. I wonder if its because the plugs aren't properly gapped for a tuned engine. Any ideas? The shake is only when the car is at 1200 rpm in the start up mode. My spark plugs are "NGK PFR7S8EG Double Platinum Spark Plugs" Does anyone know the pre gap of those.

Shoot, looking at http://www.ngk.com/product.aspx?zpid=9940 and click specs, they were pregapped to 0.032. Is it ok to gap these to 0.028 post use. Or should I get a new set?

According to this thread, APR suggests .028 with StageI or II tune. I don't see why pulling them and re-gapping would cause any issues. That would give you an opportunity to inspect them and see if there are any issues...or just replace them, it's up to you.

Mine, btw, were at .044 and I gapped them down. The Iridiums are suppose to ignite even at a larger gap than .032 as well as the R8 coil packs. So even .044 would be alright, but again, I gapped to .028 because of my tune.

Did you notice better performance at 0.028 or compared to old plugs? I hope gapping them properly due to tune 0.028 gets rid of my start up shake on cold starts at the morning.

Yes, then again, my coil packs were bad. I replaced coil packs and plugs together. Starts up fine. Cold starts, RPM @ 1200 then idles down to just under 800 within a minute. Idle isn't rough, no sputtering or hesitation. Everything runs smoother and maybe it's just me, but I feel my exhaust note is a tad quieter. I'm running straight 3" pipe from cat back...pretty loud. I do feel I will need to clean my intake manifold. That will cause rough start up as well.
