How much for valve seal replacement?

So a guy here in my town is selling his b6 s4 he said needs new valve seals contemplating on picking it up depending how much would cost to replace them. Anyone ever had them replaced ?? How much did you pay??

I was quoted $1000, which included the valve stem seals but sans the exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and valve cover gaskets. It would probably expect more than that since my local independent shop has very favorable labor rates.

You need to remove the engine, and once you get the engine out you need to separate it from the transmission.

Once the engine is out, the "book" gives you 15 hours to do the seals.

There are several special tools needed for this job.

At least you told him it probably wasn't a realistic price for most shops.

OP this is a big job. It's also going to be one of the those jobs that once you get in there you are going to keep finding stuff that is going to need to be replaced.

How does he know the seals need replacing? What's the issue, exactly?

Maybe that guy meant it needs valve cover gasket seals?

Nope I drove the car it's valve stem seals , it smokes white when idles when warm at lights/ stop signs and not while driving so the oil is passing the seal or seals putting more oil on the valves It's not head gasket since coolant hasn't moved at all and oil is still good

I would say piston Rings but doesn't smoke while driving

I would say go find yourself a different car. B6/B7 S4's are very easy to find right now, just find one that is in good working order after you do a PPI and compression test. If you are buying this S4 as a project car and you want to mess with it and work on it, go for it. But as a DD i would pass just as quickly as i saw it

I have a b6 s4 as my daily, it would just be another project and he would sell it to me for a steal! Since he bought a new s4

5000$. He just put new clutch 5k ago and had timing done 30k ago and receipts from new. He's original owner he's like 50 lol and was ontop of maint so idk would it even be worth it?
