    Coilover Installation DIY?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have H&R Street Performance coilovers and SPC UCA's on the way. I'm tempted to try and tackle the install with a friend.

Anyone know of a good writeup for a first timer?

I vaguely recall somewhere in the "Show your suspension" thread several folks posting their DIY installs - not much help, as it a loooong thread.

Can anybody tell me if we can re use all of the original hardware to install the coilovers? ECS Tuning instructions says the factory manual tells them to replace the bolts and nuts because they are TTY (stretched) bolts. Just wanted to know if I can reuse them without any issues.

You can reuse all your hardware, H&R will give you new nuts for the struts and shocks pistons, just make sure to apply a generous amount of anti-seize on the control arm pinch bolt to make sure it doesn't seize itself to the uprights a few years from now. Also make sure you get a strut housing spreader it is a required tool that makes the job sooooooo much easier. The rears suck btw, i compressed the spring on the car then had a helper push down on the lower control arm and pried the spring out from the top.

Thread jacking a little, but I have the H&R Coils (same as OP) sitting in my house and the darn thing didn't come with installation instructions. I see a few H&R spring installs and various other brand Coils but no H&R specific info on our cars. I figured I'll watch a video on youtbe to get the gist of it but The question of the bumpstop.... Does it have to be cut down and, if so, how much? I know that the shorter springs could cause for a bumpy ride if the bumpstop is suppose to be modified yet isn't.

P.S. Sorry OP, just didn't feel like starting a new thread for information that you may find helpful in your install as well

    Front:
    - Re-use the factory washer between the top of the shock rod and the factory rubber mount
    - Don't re-use the factory bump-stop, H&R already has a plastic gaiter in place (no bump-stop needed here)
    - Apply a liberal coating of the Boeing oil on the threaded section of the shock body
    - 1.25" of exposed threads (measuring down from bottom of the large/top collar) yielded about 25.75" GTF on my sedan. (Can be adjusted later with wheel in place, once front is jacked/lifted to take the load off of the suspension)
    - My coils seem to be binding a bit on tight turns (low speed, hi-load), recommend applying a grease or film lubricant to at least the top few coils to help prevent any binding. This will become part of your regular maintenance from now on and can be done from the topside, if you remove the black plastic covers on the shock towers and spray down at the coils, or from underneath if you're up on jack stands or ramps etc.

    Rear:
    - Re-use the factory bump stop, no trimming required
    - Re-use the factory black plastic rock guard, zip-tie in place to prevent it from rotating (there's an alignment hole to put the zip-tie through)
    - Don't re-use the factory lower rubber spring isolator, the H&R perch goes in its place
    - To raise/lower, hold collar in place with spanner wrench and rotate the perch from underneath, using an Allen key/socket (weight off of wheels, suspension unloaded)
    - 1.00" of exposed threads (measuring down from bottom of the collar) yielded about 26" GTF on my sedan

Don't take out the pinch bolt unless it's absolutely necessary for say, replacing upper control arms. Undo the inside ends of the upper control arms and you can get the strut assembly out.

    Pin bolt = N 10491802
    Washer = N 10406105
    Lock nut = N 10272302

The pinch bolt can be replaced by an M10x110 DIN931 partially threaded bolt grade 8.8 or 10.9.

That reference is wrong. It's so much easier to undo the bolts of the top shock mount from the engine bay, drop the strut assembly a little and then undo the inside ends of the upper control arms. The only reason to remove the pinch bolt is to change the upper control arms or to change the knuckle.

The guy who wrote the DIY for VWortex got the front right. He didn't remove the pinch bolt. However, it's not necessary to drop the subframe in the rear if you have good spring compressors. I used 1 compressor to compress the stock spring enough for it to come out. The new, shorter spring will be much easier to install.

The first time I did springs and shocks in a B8 it took me about 6 hours with a buddy. Once you know how everything goes and what to remove, I don't think it should take more than 3-4 hours.

It took me 8 hours with the wife. Could have been quicker but I wont go into it lol. Now that im lowered I see the headlights fall significantly shorter. Is there anyway to adjust this?

You can adjust the headlights as you would normal halogen lights, just make sure they're in the levelled position when adjusting. The adjustment screws are located on top of the headlight housing.

Nope, as long as your car is level when you do the manual adjustment. If not, you can cycle the lights to the levelled position with VCDS and then do the adjustment.

    hello there,
I have bought the coil overs from SOLO WERKS. I have never installed coilovers. I am not familiar with the installation. I have been reading the different posts and I havent seen anybody mentioning if they bought new bushings and new mounts? My friend pointed it out to me, saying that i would have squeaky noise if i dont get new ones. What would you guys recommend? if i have to buy those, where do i get them?

    thank you for your help

Any help on adjusting height? I have Vogtlands, they charge $160 each time to adjust height at my shop I don't have any power tools, but i was wondering if it was possible on a quattro for me to make height adjustments myself? I heard it's extremely complicated on the quattro's, any help would be greatly appreciated. I just got wheels and would like to be able to do some adjustments to the height myself until I find the perfect ride height.

Not sure about Voglandts, but the H&R come with the adjusting tool (spanner wrenches) you can adjust them simply by jacking the car up taking off the tires
