i didnt remove it, i just sprayed over it, it will bond to the grey and if i peel it off later it will come off as one. i didnt peel it because the grey works well as a basecoat, if i had like blue on there or something then i'd peel it otherwise the red wouldn't cover so well over the blue and i'd need more coats. and also i just needed less product this way since now i have both layers on there to form a thicker coat, so i didnt need to use as much as i would if i were painting from scratch.

here's some daytime pics, in the shade it's a nice darker red, and in the sun it pops a bit more and the pearls/flakes show and give it a bit of an brighter red and a hint of orange to it. and under the sun and light it has a nice sparkle to it, there's some flakes in there that give off a nice metallic shine. i originally planned to go for a darker red finish, but it didn't come out exactly as i thought, but im still happy with it, i actually was debating between the brighter, slightly orange red or a dark deep red, so i still like it. cant wait to do the wheels and clean it up.

Close up, pic really doesn't capture it well but you can see sparkly little red flakes under the light, a lot of diff looking reds depending on the light.

nope its just a Cali state law, they just dont allow the paint over a certain volume (not just plasti dip, but any paint i think), so no plasti dip gallons. you can bring it in of course but they cant ship to Cali

You can buy 14.5oz cans and mix to stuff homedepot sells called industrial maintenance thinner.

yeah you can get the smaller unthinned cans and then mix in thinner (V&M Naptha is best to use with dip), but you would only get like black mainly, I haven't seen other colors. Unless you could get the unthinned clear dip in the small cans, you won't be able to do any custom colors or mix in any pearls, tints, etc.

they might have white in the cans too, but white has bad coverage so you will need almost twice as much white as black, i guess if theres no other option for gallons it works but its just a hassle. also all white IMO is a bitch to keep clean, since its matte it gets stained and dirty very quickly and it shows on the white.

haha. well if you're only limited to the cans its gonna be tough. you could mix in some pearls with the black/white and it will give it a subtle effect, but not as much as if it were mixed with clear. what color is the car currently? if you want a dark silver you could use the white dip and get some dark gray/black pearls and mix that into the white to bring it down a shade, but not sure if it will have the same metallic effect, it will just tint the white and have a more subtle effect to it.

here's a night shot i just took, it has this very cool, reddish copper type look in the dark. i'll start up a proper thread with a bunch more pics this upcoming weekend, waiting to install my coils and clean up my wheels, cuz they are dirty as hell and the previous dip i had on the edges are ripping up (from tire mounting a while back, never got around to redoing them yet) so it looks bad. just got back from a family gathering and everyone was all whoaaa and didnt believe i did it myself till i showed em pics of the process lol.

oh and first day out and i had this girl run up to my car saying "omg can you please wait 2 seconds i gotta take a pic of your Audi it's so sexy" haha, felt like a celebrity LOL

LOL i did. with a very light coat of the 'Smoke' plastidip, which is basically a tint. but i hated how the bright yellow NY plates stand out, I did my rear one in 1 light coat, and the front in like 2-3 light coats. havent had any issues from cops. one cop actually was looking at it once, but then i think he figured it was probably just dirty (it was winter). but my rear one you can't tell its tinted much because thats the one the cops will be able to see a lot more so i left that one very light.

but yeah lol, hate seeing the bright yellow stand out and clash with the car color, i had it 'smoke tinted' even before i dipped the whole car. but its not really that dark or anything, not as dark as those who put those tinted plastic covers over it, but with this one the cop was just confused and thought it was dirty (looks dirty up close too), but i'll take slightly dirty looking over bright yellow. but in the night time the rear one is still pretty clear, but the front one is a bit darker at night, but i like it. had it like that for like 2 years now and no issues in NYC/NJ.

So what exactly does the plastidip texture feel like (under your fingers if you rub your hand across it)? Is it lumpy like orange peel or factory undercoating (rock resistant "road guard") or smooth and the little chunks I'm seeing is just metallic/pearl flakes inside the dip that you can't actually feel?

it's pretty smooth, not super smooth like vinyl, it's possible if you spray it perfectly and if you smooth it out afterwards with thinner. but when you do add pearls/flakes it does add a slight roughness to it, but not really that much. but those bumps you see are mainly just the pearls showing through the dip. so its not like clearcoat/vinyl smooth of course, theres just a very little textured feeling to it, but nothing you'd consider rough or anything. but you only see that close up, a few feet away and it looks vinyl wrap smooth.

lol happens to us all, most of these mods i would not have even thought of or cared for until you start getting addicted on here.

and check their site and youtube channel here, all the videos you need are all here, sort by date check the earlier uploaded vids, those are the more in depth ones that are more instructional, most of the newer ones are just showing off the product but for beginners i'd start on the earlier videos.

Liquid Smoke, This thread is what inspired me to have my car dipped. I should have done it myself like you, would have saved me hundreds. Good looking out, I see you have since changed the color and it still looks dope. I will dip it myself from now on.

thanks! yeah it's a good experience to try it yourself and learn to do it, it's your own car and you get to do it like you want, and once you get the hang of it you can change up the color yourself every few months if you like. i'm already looking forward to a new color this summer, still thinking on ideas. i was leaning towards doing a satin black probably.

@Cloudg8 - Nardo is sick but im not sure for now, i've had the this custom blue ready for the longest. i may do Nardo later but I will go for a satin pearl Nardo instead of the glossy one DYC did

Either way I'm sure it will look bad ass. Keep us updated on what you do!

Finally got around to it yesterday, this is my first time spraying a whole car with anything, but DYC's videos made it pretty easy to get started lol (thanks Fonzie!). I bought the spray gun they use as well and it works great to get nice coverage.

I sprayed pretty much after sunset with a light, got pretty dark but I wanted to finish it up and not have to wait and do all that masking again the next day. But it came out veryyy smooth, better than I expected since it was my first time I was a bit worried. I know some of you guys worry about plasti dip, but I used one of the good sprayers and if you do it right it turns out awesome, I bet you couldn't tell between this and vinyl side by side. But I couldn't be happier with the finish and color, exactly the color I was going for. At night it has this dark gray, close to satin black look, but in the daytime and in the sun it just pops and you can really see the metallic pearl shine.

I went for a metallic dark gray. Mixed in some metallic gray pearl into clear dip and sprayed over my originally black car. I left the side mirrors, front splitter, and the roof in black, I love a gloss black roof. Also left all the chrome/alu trim (left the rear emblem in that brushed alu type look it ended up with and will leave it instead of peel back to chrome for now. And I had this done before, but the wheels are plastidipped too for a gunmetal look.

Here are just a few pics for now I snapped before work, but I will try to get some better ones within the next few days and post them. These are a bit washed out from the sunlight, but you can see in some of the pics the actual color and finish, and you can see how smooth it is in the close ups. Let me know what you guys think!

(I have to peel off some of the leftover dip off a few pieces of trim, and also when I sprayed the trunk it was getting cold and the cold metal started to get dew on it, so it came out uneven like that, but it's an easy fix I will just respray trunk and can smooth that out no problem.)

haha thanks dude, i appreciate it. not to sound conceited but i love when people admire my car and the custom work i do on it, feels good knowing i have "fans" lol.

if you look through the thread first pages you should see the list there. if you want something similar i'd get Anthracite from DipYourCar, that will be best for beginner and will look pretty close to this, just slightly less of a shine and more gray (mine has a hint of blue to it).

otherwise you can get the 'Stormcloud Grey' pearl from DYC and that should be a pretty close match.

2 gal black for the base
1 gal matte clear and 1 gal glossifier mixed together, with 50g of the Stormcloud Grey pearl mixed into the 2 gal mixture (this clear/gloss mix gives you that slight satin look)
