Matte Metallic Gray - Plasti dipped my whole car

wow i like this a lot!

just curious how did you get that coat? you mixed metallic grey with pearlizer or clear coat? or metallic with grey? confused

it's clear plastidip with grey pearl powder mixed in, that gives a slightly transparent effect over the car, but my car is black so i didnt need a separate black base coat to get the dark base to it. ie. if i did this over a white car it would be more matte silver, over black came out more gunmetal.

By the way, exactly which sprayer did you buy?

i got the Graco 2900 from Lowes for $120. but those are good if you spray a lot over time they last longer, but the ~$60 Wagner brand guns they have work fine as well if you're not dipping all the time.

Does is mess up your paint at all ? And how hard is it to peel it off? I've been debating on doing this !

it's easy to peel off if you do enough coats for a thick durable coat. otherwise it still peels but it will just peel in pieces rather than one big sheet. and it's not meant to be on there long term, i think like up to 2 yrs, after that it will become much harder to remove and could maybe pull up some parts of clearcoat with it. but i dont plan to keep this for that long, will go back stock some day or just keep switching up the colors anyway.

it's like how vinyl doesnt really last well past 4-5 yrs, after that i know it starts drying out and all that too and becomes too sticky? not sure on the sticky part and if it damages clearcoat but vinyl definitely isnt permanent either.

Though I had experience with plasti-dip exterior parts before, you will need to maintain that thing. But yes, they are surprisingly durable so wish you the best luck!

-Still haven't seen plastidip in person and fear it just isn't smooth enough (easy to trap drit and visually).
-If been told once you get rockchips after dipping, the dip will be compressed in the (soft bumper for example) and therefor it will be impossible to get it out.
Never the less, enjoy the ' new' car :).

haha, i've always wanted the car this color, finally got the balls myself to go through with it

and to address your concerns:

- it's as smooth in person as it looks in the pictures. when you touch it is still smooth, but of course it wont be vinyl or clearcoat smooth, but i really dont think you can even tell because its not glossy, you would think its silky smooth until you touch it and just feel minor minor imperfections, but it's nothing that you can tell without actually touching it closely.

- the rock chips you need to worry about only during the first day or two when the dip is still soft and not fully cured, thats when the rock will leave an impression/chip and then when it does fully cure it will harden like that. but after it's cured after 2-3 days you wont get anything, the dip is very durable and flexible so no way the rock will do that. of course unless you get a huge rock hit it, it might chip it just a bit, but you can say the same for even a clear bra, and i'd rather have rock chips on my dip than on my clear coat. also if it is that bad you can easily just peel that area and respray, or if you dont wanna respray it all because of one spot you can touch it up, dab some thinner on there to smoothen it out and just spray on that spot and you can blend it in easy, it's not like paint where you have to sand and all this stuff and polish afterwards to blend, etc.

lovin the 'new' car, i got random people staring and giving compliments lol. the gas station attendant couldnt stop checking it out and asking me about it.

I've been debating whether plasti dip or vinyl wrap by myself to learn as we'll and this throws me back a bit I was decided to wrap it, but seeing how great this came out and the option of creating your own color, have extra paint for re-spray makes me want to go this route.. Really nice

What impresses me most is that he did all this himself and for under $200! What he did looks like a $2000 job and he definitely inspired me (and others) to try this. All the resources he used are available to us (youtube, this forum, the internet, etc.) and we can do it. I can't wait to try this. thanks Liquid!

thanks guys, i've already had a few people believe it was wrapped lol. im in love with the matte, i love how it brings out all the lines and curves of the car, my black paint would hide a lot of the body lines but now it just looks so much more sculpted and aggressive.

and not a fan of black wheels too much, but i'll definitely try hyper silver soon. might leave one side gunmetal as is and the other side in hyper silver, have a 2 face look :D

Good work with the plasti dip. $2k to wrap a car? Wow. You'd jump off a cliff if you knew what we pay for a good wrap here in Oz. Looks sort of close to my 3M.matte metallic wrap :cool:

To me it looks like you primered your car and didn't have enough money to do the finish base coat/clear coat. You asked, otherwise I'd have not commented. I wouldn't consider going to a flat/matte finish an upgrade. Save that for a rat rod.
