Post My Detailed VIM DIY write up

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ISSUES YOU MAY ENCOUNTER WHILE PERFORMING THIS HACK TO YOUR HEAD UNIT.
PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ THIS DOCUMENT CARFULLY.I TRIED HARD MY BEST TO PUT EVERY DETAILS IN
WORDING WHILE I WAS IN PROCESS OF CONDUCTING THIS MYSELF.

BEFORE YOU START PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU KNOw WHICH RNSE YOU HAVE EU/US

For EU versions= radio and CD/TV buttons (which this DIY was used for)

Below are the steps I took and the time to create a dozen cd for trial and error to get this to work.
Thank goes to the Klaus for his VIM MOD TOOL.For more info, please visit here

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR 4 DIGIT SECURITY CODE FOR YOUR RNSE
AND VAGOM TO CHANGE CERTAIN CODES IN YOUR RNSE.
IF YOU DON NOT HAVE THESE TOOLS, PLEASE STOP AND DO NOT CONTINUE READING!

    ONE MORE VERY IMPORTANT INFO:
*DON'T ALTER ANY OF THE ORIGINAL FILES
    *I MADE THAT MISTAKE
*ALWAYS MAKE A COPY OF ANY FILE YOU ARE GOING TO USE AND PLACE THEM AT YOUR CONVENIENCE
*IT WILL HELP IDENTIFY YOUR ERROS AND SAVE YOU SOME DISKS

Now, you can proceed and good luck!

How to create vim hack for rns-e.

First, extract all four RAR zip files to one folder to create one file.
Second, extract that one file in a folder of your choosing.
Remember, Each one of the below stated folders have certain files in them which you will be using.
    Don't alter them!
Make a copy of them and use to copy to make alteration in the process.

Here is a direct link to the files to help you guys out better:

Also, I have added my DIY text document in the RAR file to help.

THE ONLY REASONS I SAID ALL FOUR FILES IS BECAUSE I HAD THEM LIKE THAT.
IF YOU FIND ONE WITH ONLY 1 rar FILE, use that one.
The attached link has one RAR FILE.

You should have these listed files after extraction:

    EU_080
    EU_0660
    US_0110
    US_0200
    RNSE_SDS application file
    RNSE_VIM application file

    NOTE:
IN EACH ONE OF THESE FILES LISTED ABOVE YOU WILL SEE THIS IN THEM.
THESE ARE THE FIVE MAIN FILES YOU WILL BE USING.
THEY WILL VARY FROM DIFFERENT VERSIONS.

    00.VNS
    A2200087.MOT
    INDEX
    LDM.BIN
    LOADING.KWI

The only two files I used from the list above were:
    EU_080
    US_0200

Here is how to create the VIM modified disk Using EU_080 software.

    1.Opent the RNSE_VIM application
2.Read the help file, it contains info what you need to do.
3.Press the open button and look for your EU_080 folder.
4.Open the Folder and look for the "loading.kwi" and clik to open that file in the vim mod tool.
5.Make sure in the software info you see This: V220028C EU-Firmware and it must be highlighted in GREEN!

Open VIM App choosing your language:

    [IMG][/IMG]

    Click the "help" button to read or "Open" to add file see below;

    [IMG][/IMG]

    Find your file:

    [IMG][/IMG]

    Open your file:

    [IMG][/IMG]

Change your source to your desire:

    [IMG][/IMG]

You can go back to the link provided above to see what I am talking about.

    6.Set your Source: US-NAVI to Target: US-NAVI
    7.Click on unlock.
    8.Click on Save.
    9.Click on EXIT.
10.If the above steps 4 through 6 isn't completed in that way, the mod will not work!

MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE RIGHT FILE AND IT SHOWS UP GREEN IN THE APPLICATION.

Once all the obove steps has been carried out, you can now burn the disk using any disk buring software(I used imgburn) to
Create the ISO9660 disk. Locate the folder you have modified (the EU_080 file created by the VIM MOD TOOL).
Add the Modified file to your software and make sure you set it to burn as ISO9660 file.
Burn it at a low speed to make a good working disk.

    Now to the RNSE.

    Open VAG-COM option 37
Write down your current softcoding ID.You will need this for the future once everything goes right.
Next, Click on adaptation 10 and write down all the saved value on each channel from 1 to 136 ect.
If you are familiar with the adaptation channel, you will know what I'm talking about.

    Next,
To apply the modified disk you had made to hack the rnse to that EU_080 firmware,
Open vag-com again, click on option 37 then Adaptation 10 and change channel 97 to 1. Make sure it stays
on 1 to force software downgrade.
    Save and exit vagcom completely.

Insert your disk and let it run.
You should now see your rnse is being updating to that firmware.
Once the RNSE reboots it will prompt you to enter your securtity code and veola.
You are now on that firmware and you will see everything in a different language.(German I presume)

Open back VAgcom option 37, adaptation 10, channel 5 should be 250 instead of 1.
You now have VIM in place.

If it is a EU head unit converted to US, I needed to removed the radio's fuse 39 and let it sit for 12hours.
Prior in doing this, the RNSE will load, but the VIM didn't stick.SO MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE RADIO FUSE(MINE IS #39)
I had mine for more then 15hours(It was raining)

    To finalize the chapters,

    I used the US_0200 folder.
Open the folder and you will see a bunch of files. Look for the file that says INDEX.(it's a text file)
Right click on the file and scroll down to properties and make sure it isn't set to "read only".
If so, please change it and click above file and save it.
Then go back to the SAME index file and open it.
It will be a Text file. Now you will see 3 items there.
You must change the named SOFIDX:0200! Change it to 0270. So your new named file looks like this (SOFIDX0270)
Use your bruning software and create an update ISO9660 cd with this modified software.
    I renamed mine like this.
    US_0200 to US_0270.

Go to the car and re-insert the #39 fuse for the head unit.(REMEMBER, THE UNIT WAS WITHOUT POWER FOR MORE THEN 12HOURS)
Power up the vehicle. Don't start the car.
Check with vagcom to make sure Channel 5 is at 250.(which it was)
Insert your modified US_270 disk and let your RNSE do its work.

Once the RNSE has finished updating, open vagcom and
Replace all your adaptation values and softcoding to where they were as original.
Note, not all of them might be the same as your original setting. I had to change my softcoding to match my hardware in my car.
Now, Insert your current map(I have the 2013) and reboot your RNSE to make it read the disk.
(hold down radio and setting button for a few seconds)
My unit wasn't reading my disk. It told me to see my dealer, c'mon really!
This is why you have to reboot it with your navigation disk in it.

Now, the only problem the nav lady is speaking from the rear driver speaker.Darn!
I left it like that, but I checked channel 5 = 250 i'm hacked for vim!

To fix the nav lady to speak through the front you might have to follow these steps.
I didn't proceed with this. I left mine the way it currently is. Please use this at your own risk!!!!
I saved my findings and added it here below for those who prefer to re-do the whole process to
get the nav lady to speak through the front driver's side speaker.

1.Burned EU80 disk, Klaus tool source US and target US
    2. Burned Us200 update, changed in index.txt file 200 to 270 using Notepad, make sure file is not set to "read only", to check right click on file and choose properties
    3. Vag-com channel 97 set to 1
    4. inserted hacked EU80 disk, after update removed fuse number 30 for 12 hours
    5. inserted 0200/0270 and updated
    6. vag-com channel 37, adaptation channel 05 is still set to 250. Awesome!!!
    7. inserted 2009-2010 map dvd. Nav lady speaks from rear speakers. While its not a big deal, I decided to fix it.
    8. Burned us150 software, changed index.txt from 0150 to 0280
    9.Burned us200 software, changed index.txt from 0200 to 0290
    10. downgraded to 0150/280, checked channel 05, value was 1, tried manually change 250, did not work
    11. updated to 200/290, still the same, channel 05 is set to 1. Damn it!!
    12. Downgraded to hacked eu80, disconnected radio fuse and went to sleep
    13. 12 hours later inserted 0150/280, upgraded, checked channel 05 is still at 250 value
    14. did all the adaptation values, channel 136 set to 5
    15. inserted 0200/290, upgraded and checked channel 05. Bingo, its still set at 250 and nav lady speaks from the front

Thank you for reading Suraj's Updated and DIY VIM hack Write up.

Sorry everyone for the long post.
I tried making it as detailed possible.
I did take a few pictures while undergoing this process, but it varies from everyones unit.
    Good luck.

That's awesome, so you are running the most current map disc with the VIM hack? Also what external DVD player are you using?

When I bought my RNSE the previous owner had wired up an external DVD player, Denison ICE, and had a VIM box and multimedia adapter but the wiring was so jumbled and confusing, I just bought a quadlock harness from Kufatec and called it a day. Nice to see someone running something other than SW0200 with the VIM hack tho!

Thank you for the video David. I guess IMA PLUS IT IS. In saw on the kufatec website they have special dvd players for the rnse. Any recommendations?
    And also for the camera?

You can always run updated NAV discs with a VIM hack by updating your RNS-e SW version # so that the RNS-e thinks its newer than the newest DVD you are using. You can see that was done in some of the steps above.

I have a multimedia box that runs off of Red/White/Yellow RCAs so conceivably I could use any video source. I would suggest looking into this as the Kufatec box is expensive. Mine is just like some of the ones up on ebay and it works great.

For the back up cam, use the OEM. There is one on ebay right now from LKQ for $115. Retail new is about $400. I bought an OEM A6 camera from LKQ last week for $90 which I am happy about.

You need a source of module.
    See my previous post.
Try kufatec. IMA basic or plus.
Or ebay. Search for multimedia interface. You will get the idea.

So funny David. I am reading on the Kufatec's site and there you go posting the list.
I just like the way this thread is going. All inputs will soon be available here for all the noobies to get all their questions answered just like I did.
I am still debating to get the IMA PLUS versus the IMA basic.
If i'm going to spend the $$, I might as well do it right. I am planning on getting the RVC in the future.

Do you now if the IMA plus you have came with all hardware for installation including the harness?

By the way, The link is posted for those who need the files to get your MOD ON!

    See the first post.

    Enjoy.

Best DIY write up to date. Thanks OP

I will be doing this to both of my RNS-E's. Looking forward to reading more on the IMA (plus/basic) add-ons and settings.

I'm personally waiting for the Kivic one to be released to the public. The manufacturer is spending too much time on Facebook instead of validating his product.

As for the RVC, I first had the eBay one

License plate lighting looks like shit! The camera broke down on and I got my money back and decided to go OEM. Installed LED resistors while I was at it.

Than I was like f* it let's do all LED.

Everything looks awesome David. I have led's interior as well for the backup lights. I didn't need resistors for the license plate lights, but I might need some for the reverse. I left them as is for now since I had them.
I will be contacting the suppliers to find out some information. I hope they can get me the items I need faster then kufatec. I currently have a dvd player sitting here for years. I was going to install that in my previous car, but I just went with the pioneer navigation unit. I might use my current dvd player for now.
Now, I just need to IMA plus and harness to get everything going.

I updated the RAR file to one file one from the link I had posted in the first post for download.
You no longer need to extract four files. Just one now and it is a smaller upload/download.
Please chime back in to verify this worked for you.

    Thanks.

Hey PNW do you have a link for the camera on eBay? I tried searching but all I could find were China ones.

Just an update I have successfully managed to downgrade the Rnse MK1- 192 D by buying a second hand 2004 nav-tech dvd downgrading to that then with an awful lot of help from waiapasi2006 who I OWE THIS VERY BIG THANK YOU TO! I really appreciate all the help you gave. Using the download link a few picture emails I figured it out and added some files from the 2004 dvd to the 0800 vim modified cd burned with image burn and viola My rnse downgraded and adaptation 5 is at 250 yaay! but the joy ended early as it is asking for a pin the I was given (last four digits of the serial) is no longer working??? also can anyone out there confirm whether I can recode the A4 2004 Rnse mk1 unit to an A6 unit?

Hey guys, I am bringing this one back to life.
I found some disks I had created to get the VIM-Mod done to my RNS-E.
I don't want to trash them, so I will be uploading the files for you guys to use in case one needs it.
I will be posting the link up later.

    Here are the links.

    VIM Application

    00_80 Shows green

0200 to 0260 with Aux input enabled

I also added the text document for you to follow in the first rar file.
You will noticed from my prior text doc, I had it set at 270 = no aux input.
With this one, 0260 = aux input.

    Good luck guys and enjoy.

Yes I did. I hope all went well with the process. Maybe you can share any extra information here for others looking to do the same as well.

Thanks for your help waiapasi, and thanks for uploading the software required, its pretty difficult to find it! Yes all worked fine in the end. For anyone looking to do this in Europe on a Euro RNS-E, I'll explain here what I did as most info available on the internet is confused by USA/EURO differences, at least I found it confusing.

    1. Download the files above in post #33 named 'VIM application' and '0080 Shows Green' and save to your desktop.

    2. Open the 'VIM application' and read the instructions.

    3. Select 'OPEN' in the VIM application and look for the other file you saved on the desktop named '0080 Shows Green'.

    4. Open the '0080 Shows Green' file and select the subfile in it called 'LOADING.KWI'. This will appear in the VIM application like in waiapasi's pics above in post #1.

    5. Select EURO/US for SOURCE and TARGET. I'm in Europe and have a EURO RNS-E so I selected both as EURO.

    6. Click 'UNLOCK' in the VIM application, then hit 'SAVE' and save the modified 'LOADING.KWI' file to your desktop.

    7. There are 5 subfiles in the '0080 Shows Green' folder, I just deleted the original LOADING.KWI subfile and added in the modified LOADING.KWI and saved that new file and called it '0080 Modified'. So you end up with a new file with the 5 subfiles including the modified LOADING.KWI.

    8. Then burn that file to disc. This is where I had difficulty. I went through about 15 discs before I got the RNS-E to accept it. Before you load the CD in the RNS-E you need to open module 56 or 37 with VCDS and set adaptation channel 97 to 1 to allow a software downgrade. You also need to write down your soft coding and all adaptation channel values from 1 to 140 as all will be wiped and you'll need to restore them afterwards. I used a mixture of CD-RW and CD-R when burning. It eventually worked on a CD-R but I don't think the disc choice made any difference. I first used the toshiba cd burner software on my laptop and the RNS-E just said 'disc unreadable'. I then switched to IMGBURN software and the RNS-E now recognised the CD as an update CD but wouldn't actually do the update. After a few more wasted discs I switched to NERO burning software and this worked first time. RNS-E recognised the CD as a update CD and started the downgrade to 0080 after a few seconds.

    9. The downgrade took about 3 or 4 minutes to complete. RNS-E then reboots and now is in German language. Open VCDS and module 56 or 37 and check that adaptation channel 5 is now set to 250. This is what enables VIM. Close VCDS and eject the update CD from the RNS-E.

    10. Pull the radio fuse think it was number 37. Leave it out for 12 hours minimum. You can just disconnect the battery either but if you want to use the car just pull the fuse.

    11. After the 12 hours I checked again that channel 5 was still at 250. It was. I then loaded my 2007 nav disc that had 0100 firmware on it. The RNS-E upgraded to 0100 it took about 3 or 4 minutes. I checked channel 5 and it was still 250. I then loaded a 0650 firmware CD that I made and the RNS-E upgraded to 0650. Channel 5 was still 250. I then inserted my 2016 nav disc and reset all my soft coding and adaptation channel info with VCDS. Don't change channel 5!!!!!!!! Leave it at 250.

    12. RNS-E worked fine but nav lady was speaking from passenger side speaker. I changed a channel to 00010 and she now spoke from both front speakers. I saw this on another thread. I will have to check again to see which channel and will update the thread.

I will burn another CD with 0080 and will update the thread with exactly what settings I used in NERO to make it work. Not the easiest mod to do to be fair but is much better than buying the hardware that fools the RNS-E by messing with the speed or GALA signal.

The files are there in post #33, you need to set-up a 4shared account to download them if I remember correctly.
