how do i know if my DV is bad?
i removed mine to inspect it and the "piston" just fell out.
after i put the spring and piston all back together it seemed to work, altough still nothing seems to be holding it in.
i notice the car stutters a bit in low rpm but no codes, just wondering if the dv is indeed bad.

Just did this on my buddy's A4. It was a PITA even on the lift when is the 3/8" stuff. Used a 1/4" extension on #5 Allen socket and turned this into a 10 min job.

    USE 1/4" SOCKETS AND EXTENSIONS.

I know this is old but posting as it may help someone planning to do it.

Am i the only one who had a big problem with unplugging the harness? No one's actually said how to do it, i was stumped and didn't want to start prying things. Luckily the place i rent the lift out had someone to help - He ended up using a small flat head pointing downwards in the hole on the side.

    A few other things:

    - It looks like blue thread locker is used on these bolts from factory, i didn't have any so hopefully it will be okay without.

    - If your allen/hex socket is too wide like mine was, you won't get it fully in one of the bolts and can nearly round the bolt like me. I used a hex bit in the end.

    - It's impossible to torque the bolt's with a 3/8" torque wrench (well i managed the invisible one) unless it's got more teeth than mine had. I had to guess which i'm not too happy about, probably under torqued if anything. Also i don't think the torque specs are right, in elsawin it says 7Nm.

Took me about an hour in the end, 30 mins of it was trying to get the electrical harness off. Overall pretty easy job, can't imagine it's much fun doing on your back though. The key i think is to have a 1/4" ratchet with a really small extension, hex bit and whatever that thin piece is called that connects the bit to the ratchet.

Also i have a question, was the DV supposed to be oiled or anything?

Tip for connectors is to push the connector IN before pressing the lever/button and pulling OUT. Doing this helps release the locking tab.

Nope. The DV will see plenty of oil blow-by from the turbo.

That's good to know, thank you.

I couldn't find anything on the connector to press, no lever or button. I tried pushing the whole thing inwards but it wouldn't budge in any direction. Is there supposed to be something you push with your finger as opposed to needing to use a screwdriver?

Its a little tab on the wire harness side that you press down with your finger to release the locking tab holding the connector to the diverter.

Bringing this back up. Trying to remove my DV right now. I got 2 of the 3 bolts out, I thought the top was the easiest since it had the most room. One of the lower ones is now stripped and I have no idea what to do to get it out. All my extractor bits won’t grab it tight enough, the 5mm is too large and shallow. I’ve tried Allen wrenches, a 5.5mm is still too big. All my Allen sockets.

And that electric connector was too brittle, the locking tab broke almost immediately.

Why should have been a simple job to keep this car going for the winter is now mess. Why is it always the simple jobs that become the worst ones. I really don’t want to have to take the snows off this one and out them on the S4. But the A4 is dead in the water right now.

Follow up, anyone have the part number for those DV screws? I’m gonna need a new set.

Actually did some of my own research. Looks like they’re M6x16 bolts. Part # N01474011 should work according to ECS and it’s a little cheaper than the direct replacement. $4.80 for 3 from ECS instead of about $4.20 each from FCP for the direct replacement.

    Pretty sure it is these:

Check the 'Kits' that are put together for the DV to make sure all are the same.

Just edited my post with pretty much the same info as yours, just didn’t see yours first.

Hopefully this combined thread gives everyone what they need.
