I know what the outcome is....I ve read all about it over at drift something forums...What i want to know is,how severe is all the tire scritching and wheel hopping on our b5s....If anyone has done it,i'de be glad to hear about it

Not the same platform but someone has in the C5 section, probably squeeze some of your questions out of him.

Be prepared for worn-out/broken cv joints.

What is the point of welding the rear diff?

It says he welded the center diff not the rear and was looking for a LSD for the rear, so not the same thing the OP was asking which was about welding the actual rear diff.

    Thanx guys for the replies...

1illA6 i checked that thread...not much info there...Just some wheel spinning...

mauromj i dont know about cv joints...the axles will go out quicker...but that's not what i'm worried about

Mike, you weld the rear diff so you can drift the car.I cant drift it with an open diff. The inner wheel keeps on spinning and nothing else. Also with a locked diff, the slide is much more predictable than an open diff

Why not just put a LSD in there then? I am sure the car will drive like crap on the street with the rear diff welded.

It comes down to money....I dont have 1000+ to put on an lsd. That's why i am trying to find out if it is even barely driveable with a welder

If you daily it, you'll go through a $1000 in tires in very little time. Unless you rock like...15's or something. The horror.

I suppose if you're drifting you already have the hookup on tires, though. One of our mechanic's daily drives a Subaru with a welded rear diff. It is really hard on everything in the rear. All the bushings and such. His wife refuses to ride in it, but I think that's more because it's an eyesore than the welded rear diff, lol.
^Don't listen to this guy, he's not even a mechanic.

some of the old school A8's v8's had an lsd... the housing will not work but the rear diff will fit into a S4 rear diff housing.
I don't know if the s4 and A4 are interchangeable though.

    lol. Why not?

Everything should be drifted, if at all possible.

If you don't have $1000 to burn then drifting the car might be the last thing you want to do because just 1 little mistake and you have yourself a parts car.

It was a bit tricky at the beginning Mike. Now i'm getting used to it....Also the track is pretty open and you have to really try hard to hit the car on something solid

I've driven a rwd s4 and can tell you while its fun to get sideways it handles
Like shit overall. B5 platform is not balanced for rwd.
