    Bump...Squeak...Bump...Squeak...Bump...Squeak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello fellow Azers. I have a question for you. Every time I go over any bump in the road in my B7 S4 I get a squeak/chirp sound that comes from the front of the car. It does not matter if I hit a slight bump on the right front tire or the left front tire -- it squeaks on both sides. I took to Mendham Audi (worthless dealership IMO) and they said everything looked fine and -- of course -- they could not replicate the sound on the road test. I know it may sound petty but the squeaking sound annoys me to no end. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

check strut mounts and front sway bar bushings. You can spray some white lithium grease in the sway bar bushings and see if that works.

I also have this chirp that I haven't found either. How do you check the strut mounts? I also found that my upper control arm bushings are starting to tear.

I had a very similar issue for quite a long while on my audi s4. I put mine up on the shop lift a few times to try and figure out wtf the noise was. All bushings and everything looked ok, so I thought it might be the upper mounts or something.

Anyway, I ended up removing all plastic underbody trim to give the car a good clean, and found loads of dust/dirt/small stones stuck between the chassis and the side skirts. A very small line that i opened gently and got a hand brush to clean it all out. Stopped all squeaking noises! Was strange, but there was a load of crap in there. Might be worth giving that a try?

I have that and it's the brake pads rattling. My garage managed to stop the front one doing it but one of the rears is at it now.

    Give yours a look-see.

/\/\...would be willing to bet this is it. try applying the brakes lightly as you go over a section of road that causes the rattling...that will tell you if it is your brake pads rattling.

    Cheers,

For me, it was the brakes as well. For a long time i had squeaking from my front end, thinking it was the suspension. When getting a tune-up, had them check the suspension for the noise, said suspension is fine. And of course could not replicate the noise. I finally gave up. Recently my brake pads wore out and also had to replace the rotors.

    Squeaks are now gone!

My 04 S/4 has no noise ...and my Porsche Tech ( friend ) who installed water pump and all related parts mentioned this.
Your valve covers are leaking...I just finished R&R that. Took my time and feel good that I was able to do this.
Back to your question, he also advised me that strut bushing and sway bar are gone / worn...so this coming weekend. He's going to take it to work and do this for me. Mine does not make noise, but it sounds like the heavy 4.2 simply wore those components out. Oh my S/4 only has 74k on it and I drive in LA where most if not all the roads are smooth.

    I hope this helps.

I think you guys are spot on with this diagnosis because when I press the brake pedal over bumps in the road it does not make the sound. It is a certified car. Do I take it to the same dealer who could not get it to "replicate" on a road test or to another dealer and direct them to check the brakes? Or, do I try to correct it myself? Thanks.

I had this problem too.. it's the clips on the brake calipers (part w/ the s4 logo on it)... you can either lubricate them and get rid of the noise for some finite amt of time (mine went away for about 8 months) or get new clips. For me it was a chirp from both front tires over any medium sized crack in the road, but it doesn't occur over speed bumps. Hope that helps

You take it to whoever is cheaper. LOL its a "brake" problem and they will not fix for free. Or try doing it yourself. i paid 130 for them to fix it and resurface my pads.

    Wagner thermo-quiet pads = $75 / set.
Installation cost = some elbow grease.

Ive had a slow speed turning/brake noise for some time now, and sometimes when braking over bumps....Im thinking I may have bad clips. Mostly happens when turning right. What is it grinding against? The rotor?

130 was fine for me. They were doing something else at the time (maybe oil change) so i didnt care too much.

That is PRECISELY what my car does! I will try to lube them first. How do you suggest I do that? WD 40 with the long red stick to squirt it at the points where they attach? I think I will order new clips though.

Has anyone done the rear brakes? Does the rear brakes have anti-rattle clips like the front? I'm asking because all of the clips are listed as front clips.
