Question MMI Oil indicator says low but no oil warning for the past few days.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an 09 and I have the habit of checking the oil through MMI and I noticed in the past few days that my MMI Oil Level says Min (Blank) but I have yet to receive a warning. I only drive around 25-30kms a day.

I already did the hood open and close just to make sure there's nothing wrong with the latch.

I don't have the dipstick so I can't manually check it.

Do I continue to drive and wait for the warning, bring it for a check-up now or I'm just being paranoid.

Bring it in. You don't want to mess about with low oil in these cars, but having too much oil can also be bad. . Ask if you can borrow one of the shops dipsticks for 2 minutes and check it in the lot (or a service tech to come out and quickly get a reading.) If it's low...fill it up. If it's not, then you may have to talk with the tech about what's wrong (bad sensor? Although I should think that a bad oil level sensor would throw a CEL...) In either case, consider ordering a dipstick...they're cheap and, really, should have come with the cars.

The entire MMI oil bar is 1 quart which means you still have 4 in the engine. Stop in, have the service dept. note that you had low oil, have them top it off.
If it continues to happen request Oil consumption stage 1 and refer to the stickied thread.

    Don't be alarmed.
I checked mine and it was low (bar was empty), only a matter of days until the BEEP & light.

Is it just me, or does it make sense to keep topping it off when it gets about 1/2 a qt low. The idea of running with only 4 qts to lubricate and protect the engine makes me nervous....

Been driving vehicles for 30 yrs and only adding oil when it reached a qt. low and have never had a problem. If your tracking the car and/or doing a lot of high G driving you might have a problem, otherwise a half qt or so should not be an issue.

The oil level has to be somewhat below the MIN indication on the MMI for it to trigger a warning. The opposite is true as well: must be quite a bit above MAX level for it to trigger a DIS warning for over-fill.

Real time measure: you can always get an instantaneous read on the MMI if the engine is warm, hood open and key ON, engine off. Some say the driver's door needs to be open, too.

This happens to me all the time as my car burns through 3 qts of oil between oil changes . Mine will show that it is empty but it normally takes up to a week after it gets to "empty" before the light to come on. Must be a bit of a deviation between the readout and the warning. Not a huge issue, but dont let it go too long. I normally take mine into the dealer for a top off whenever the bar gets all the way down even if the light doesn't come on. Taking it to the dealer is free and at least they know how many times you come in for it in case oil burning gets excessive.

I'd like to know how the sensor works inside the sump? A float or something else? Over 40 years with European cars, gas tanks seem to read accurately most of the time, and this one seems the opposite. Mine will show "nor information available," later an empty bar, and later half full, while a dipstick shows full. And i'm obviously not the only one. Someone on here must have been inside one of these engines to see the device.
