Costco Michelin tire sale and the new Michelin Pilot A/S 3's

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First thing's first: Michelin's are on sale at Costco now, until October 2nd, $70 will be taken off your sales ticket. It appears as if this MAY be able to used along with the $70 rebate from Michelin. I read the fine print on both offers and it appears as if each offer is independent and doesn't mention the obligatory "cannot be combined with other offers" language.
So, $140 savings on a new set of Michelin tires is SWEET!!

Second, does anyone have experience with the new Pilot Sport A/S 3's yet?? From what I have seen, these seem equally as good as the PSS's, but provide increased seasonal use.

I have no problem buying PSS (extreme summer tires), but I am concerned about cold weather traction. Meaning, driving my S4 in cold weather- not necessarily snow. I have a 4wd Excursion for that, so winter tires are not needed. The new A/S 3's procliam to be an excellent 3-season tire providing traction, wear and response as good as the PSS.

I think I am going this direction (unless I see evidence or am convinced they are awful) and will place my order before the rebates are as expired as my current Pirelli Rosso's.

A/S 3's will NOT be as good as PSS's. Perhaps reasonably close, but it's still an all-season

I just picked up the A/S 3's about a month ago...they are great tires! I see you're in PA, i'm in NY...so we're in the same boat regarding the cold weather traction. I've already learned my lesson with using summer tires in cold weather...never a good idea. I'd say go with the A/S 3's, it's a new tire but if you look at the reviews...for an "all season" tire it has better dry traction performance than quite a few summer tires do!

you're right. i just realized that. he had the 2's for the past 3 years and just got the 3's about 2 weeks ago. ran it on a road trip as well. the 2's were awesome so i dont see why the 3's would be any worst.

from what I'm seeing on Costco's site, the $70 off IS the Michelin rebate.

Right, saw it in my coupon book - but the book says the deal is also available at costco.com and when you go there the only $70 off listed is the Michelin rebate. More curious, however, is that when I enter my S4, Costco doesn't show any Michelin tires available for my car in the 255/35/19 size.

Call the Costco Tire Center, they can get any tire that Michelin makes even though they do not show on the website.

Just went to COSTCO online to order my 245/40-18 Michelin PSS for my 2011....they automatically deducted $70 in my cart.
Price is $240.99/each minus the $70 for the set of 4 ....so about $224/each which seems like a good deal plus $15/each to be mounted, balanced, and old ones disguarded.....plus TAX.
I just printed out the Manufacturers $70 rebate form with a 9/24 purchase deadline....it specifically EXCLUDES Costco!
So I doubt you will be able to combine the 2 -$70 offers.

    Thanks for this added info!
They may have changed the rebate language since Costco began their promo, or I just simply missed that! Thank you!!

This could be a good winter set for Californian like me. I would go to see snow during the winter but I don't see the need to be on a full fledged snow set. Just a decent A/S set is more than enough.

I picked up a set a few weeks ago from Discount Tire. I got the $70 rebate in the form of a debit card. I like the tires. I will say, though, I had a heck of a time getting them to balance properly. It took two additional trips to the store to get them acceptable. I may take them back again as I'm still getting a slight vibration that was not present prior to getting the tires. For Utah, they will be a three-season tire for me. I will try to run them in the winter to see if I need to get snow tires. So whether or not they will be a true all season tire is yet to be seen. For an all-season tire, they are the closest thing I have seen to a summer tire.

I know there are several threads on the wisdom of buying all-season tires and I don't wish to restart the argument, but here's why I chose to run all-seasons. In Utah, we see freezing or close to freezing temperatures from October to May. Not every day, but since I leave for work early in the morning, many spring and fall mornings are going to be below 40F. We also see afternoon temps into the 60s as late as early December and as soon as late February. This gives Utah three tire seasons. Summer (temps in the safe operating range for summer tires) from June through September. Winter (When temps are 90% sure to be below 55F) runs from Thanksgiving through February. Then spring and fall (temps that fall outside the safe ranges for summer tires and winter tires). Since I'd rather not run three sets of tires, I've chosen to run A/S tires (Mich AS/3s). If I ever choose to track the car, I still have the OE summer tires. And as stated previously, I will test this winter to see if I can use them year-round. Otherwise, I'll get set of snow tires to run Dec-Feb, when it's the coldest and snowiest here.

Personally, I think the Michelin AS/3 are as good as all-season tires can get. No, not summer tires, but I would think they are 85-90% as capable. For most of us, that's as much as we need.

Looks like Costco/Michelin does this every year at this time. Went in today to ask about some Michelin Alpin PA4's ahead of the winter season. Didn't like what they quoted, so now I'm considering the A/S 3's at around $961. Just curious what are other folks looking to do for their winter setups?

I was a hard core summer tire fan for a long time. I just swapped out my OEM Contis for the AS3s and I'm amazed. I know I'm comparing old to new tire, but even on dry roads the AS3s seem to perform better than the Contis. I'm also planning on running the Pilot A/S 3 as a 3 season tire. I have Alpin PA4s for winter. They are fine but no wear near as fun as a summer tire or the Pilot A/S 3. My justification for switching from a summer tire to the A/s 3 is that by giving up maybe 10% performance vs the Pilot Super Sports, I can run a more performance oriented tire 8- 9 months out of the year instead of 6 or 7 and save my winter tires for the worst months and ski season (Dec-Mar).

I bought a set of the A/S3's when discount tire was having its online sale. Haven't put them on yet as I'm trying to get some mileage out of the OEM Contis. From what I've read they offer outstanding dry and cold weather traction but poor traction in true snow conditions.

Question. If one weRe to buy tires from Costco, would you actually let them mount and balance them. OR would you get it done somewhere else. Don't have any local Costco in my area yet. One being built. Do they have the proper equipment to mount tires without damaging them. I only use garages that have the Hunter system.

Would definitely pass on Costco for installation. I remember they installed my tires once...when I went to pick the car up I was shocked to see they mounted directional tires in the wrong direction. I had to actually explain to the staff how directional tires work and why there was a big arrow pointing in the direction of intended travel. Now that was a few years ago...but it did not instill me with confidence.

    Cheers,
    EBS4.

I have A/S3s bought and installed with Costco on two cars. No problems for me. Agree with the sentiments about A/S 3. They are great in all but heavy winter conditions, where I found them good enough to get around (in VA) with some care but not ideal. IMO, they are perfect for a year round tire in VA (since we normally get only a little snow here and there). Maybe a good 9 month tire further north...

After blowing 2 tires due to potholes within the 1st week of owning my car I became a Costco member because of their 5 year/70K road hazard warranty on AS3s. I replaced my OEM 19" Conti's within 3 weeks with AS3s. The first set was really noisy on the highway and Costco contacted Michelin and got the latest batch tires (DOT date Nov 2013) at the time. The 1st batch was from lat 2012 I recall. The new set did not have this noise and I drove in the snow past winter up to 6-8 inches. Of course they are no where near as good as my old Blizzaks on the old RWD E90 in the snow or but nearly as good as the PS2 during summer . They are a pretty good compromise for running a single set of wheels/tires all year around especially on a AWD car.

    Decisions Decisions....
Last winter in NJ was horrible to say the least. I just hope this year will not be as bad.
Last years winter I spent in my E92 xDrive, this year, new S4, so though my stock 18's are all-season and I can probably get away with not getting winter tires, I rather be safe than sorry, but not sure which tires to get for the ultimate experience, or shall I say the lack of ultimate skiing experience in my new baby lol

You can get them from Tirerack for cheaper + still get the $70

Anyone know if you need an American membership to get into American Costco? Can you use Canadian?

Looking at the XIce Xi3's but the Canadian Costco's have the same deal on Bridgestones -> Blizzak WS80. Prefer the XIce's though....

Be very careful with PSS as the temperatures get colder.. I had PSS on my 335xi and as soon as temperatures hit freezing the compound would become hard as rock and wouldnt even grip the dry road. The road seemed as if it was completely covered in ice with them. They were by far the best tires I have had for the summer, and would love to have them again just make sure you have a second set of tires for the colder weather.

Yes, from all the threads and reviews I've read regarding these tires, they are supposedly the best all-season tire you can get. And every "expert" I've spoken with recommends them. So, when my peelers wear out, I will pick up a set of Michelin Pilot A/S 3's

    Hey everyone,

I tried buying a complete set of the Michelin's 255/35zr/19 A/S3's today from Costco here in so. cal. and they would not install or mount them because of the
spacers that I have on my existing tires.
The wheels that I took to have them mount the tires on are OEM's Titanium 5-rotor wheels and they still said they would not.

Costco can be a PITA about this. I asked for 245/35/19's to go with a set of wheels because 255 would rub, and the refused because 255 is the factory spec. I think you would be better off buying from Costco and installing them somewhere else.

I had a similar problem with Costco. They wouldn't install Bridgestone RE760 in factory size but the load rating was the wrong one. Ended up getting the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus for the same price.
I would buy them there because no one can beat the pricing, just have them installed somewhere else.

Summer tires like the PSS are actually good for 3 seasons (Spring, Summer and Fall)...they would only be a problem if you live somewhere that one of those three fell below 40 degrees. At that point, run winter tires.

All season tires are basically meant to be jacks of all trades but masters of none. You might get maybe 75% of the PSS' handling performance and 30% of the X-Ice's winter traction. So yeah, for many people that is "good enough". If you don't care much about high levels of traction and you only see the occasional dusting of snow, you might be oK.

There are several really good write-ups on this at Tire Rack...recommend going there and doing some research.

These a/s3's are awesome in dry conditions They offer similar levels of grip as the PSS I had on the last car. For the average person u probably wouldn't notice much of a difference between these the PSS and th A/S3's. I was most amazed at the amount of grip in wet conditions.

I have to admit they are terrible in the snow for an all season tire. I have had many sets of all season tires and can say that they are most definitely the worst all season tire in the snow that I have ever owned.. Hit a curb going around a turn a few weeks ago with about one inch of snow on the ground... Borderline dangerous to use in the snow IMO.
