Can someone explain to me the difference between the 3.0t in the a6 vs the s4...

why is their power potential different?

I am assuming.. fuel injectors or pump or exhaust?

    Arent their internals the same?

    Thanks!

It's a detuned version in A6. That's pretty much it.

Different transmission (tiptronic in the A6 and DSG in the S4), so you can't compare gains.

Okay that makes sense. What version of the tiptronic is it?

The C7 A6 3.0T has a different intake and exhaust than the B8 S4. While they may be slightly more restrictive in the A6, the bulk of the 23 HP difference between the two models lies in the tuning.

The C7 A6 3.0T has the ZF 8HP-55AF (Audi part #AL551-8Q) which is an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is rated for 516.2 ft-lbs of torque which on paper makes it stronger than not only both the S4's S-Tronic and 6-speed manual gearboxes, but even the S6 and S7's S-Tronic. This is more or less the same transmission that's used in the S8/A8 4.0T and RS7.

With equal modifications, a C7 A6 3.0T would give a B8 S4 a run for its money. It's only about 50-100lbs heavier than a B8 S4 S-Tronic. One potential downside to the A6 is it is tuned to shift at a much lower RPM than where a B8 S4 would be shifted. This hurts acceleration because the engine is still making power when it is shifted and shifting at a lower RPM results in having to climb back in the power band after each shift.

Does the shifting point still hold true when you put it into "M"? I believe in M my C7 A6 will go to redline before shifting.

It will shift slightly higher in M, but still nowhere near the optimal 7,000 RPMs available in the B8 S4:

When I had the GIAC tune done to my A6 I discussed the 3.0T performance capability with one of GIAC engineers. He indicated that during their testing it would keep building power up to 7K rpm. However, the A6 RPM redline has been set to 6400 RPM. Also the stock tune HP maxs out at about 5K rpm. The tune for the B8 S4 might max out at higher RPM's since it has a 7K rpm redline I believe. The GIAC tune, as well as others, keeps making HP all the way to redline. There is a lot of potential in the 3.0T that is not being tapped!!!
