There is ABSOLUTLY NO problem switching sides. At my shop, for RWD, AWD, and 4WD we move the rear straight up and the front go back and cross.
Again, there is no problem with crossing sides. Doing it this way will get the tire to a different spot on the car each time which will extend the life of the tire.
Most good tires are directional (i.e. the tire pattern to remove water) and the sidewall will be marked with the direction. If they rotate in the wrong direction, they won't remove water efficiently and you'll aquaplane. So you couldn't cross sides unless you remove them from the wheel and remount so they'll rotate in the same direction.
Sometimes at track days, we might switch sides to even out the wear. But that's only a temporary switch when we know it's not going to rain.
