to those who had experience with Koni Coilovers for the B7 platform...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, this thread is directed towards anyone who has any experience with koni coilovers on their B7. I have been researching as much as i can about the konis but I am finding conflicting information regarding a good rebound setting on the shock bodies. Some ppl are saying they should be left around 25-50% stiff and others saying to go from 75-100% full stiff with this setup. I understand this plays into preference but I am looking for some more recent input regarding the coilovers from those who have had experience with the Koni setup.

I would much rather my ride be on the sporty/stiff side, then floaty at high speeds. I just set the rebound to full stiff on each of the shocks and I can barely pull the piston rods out of the shock bodies at this stiffness, whereas at full soft it is much easier (so there is some good adjustability here). If anyone has any advise/input to offer I would appreciate it.

Also if you dont have experience with them, then no reason to chime in unless your interested as well. If we limit the input to ppl who have used them before than this thread could become useful in the future to others with the same question, as there is much less reliable/good/recent information about the Koni's than you might expect. Thanks all, looking foward to getting this setup on my car.

heres how shes standing (tall) right now.

    Hah! Fat chance.

Honestly I'd run them at 50% and see how I like it. Damping and spring rates are a moving target. IE they work in tandem to provide comfort and proper damping. Too stiff could be harsh and bouncey, and too soft can be wallowy and bouncey. There is a sweet spot where they work in tandem with one another to provide a proper level of stiffness and compliance.

I understand what you are saying but without someone with experience to tell us, whos to say that the spring rate matches up with 50% damper at all?

Oh I'm not saying it does. I'm just offering my "if all else fails" advice. I know a number of people on here run koni's though. You might want to ask on the b6 forum as there is a higher chance of getting info on there. Same suspension exactly so it 100% comparable.

Larry buys German car... Larry complains about German parts coming with German instructions...

By the way... here is a picture of 2 B7's with the Koni kit installed.

Vehicles usually have an unsightly wheel gap with stock suspension which takes away from the body lines designers worked so hard to create. The Audi A4 B6 and B7 are two classic examples of designs that were far ahead of their time. Unfortunately, they both came with extreme wheel gap which is magnified once aftermarket wheels are installed. If you speak to any enthusiast he or she will tell you that the first step of aesthetic modding should be to lower the car.

Not only will a lowered car provide a lower center of gravity which will provide superior handling but it will be more visually appealing as well. This Koni coilover kit will provide all of that and more by being fully adjustable which will allow you to dial in the ride height that is to your exact spec.

The lifetime manufacturer warranty will ensure that these coilovers will provide everything mentioned for the life of the vehicle. This KONI coilover kit fits:

Really tho...no actual experienced input anyone? I'm afraid to run the rebound setting to stiff because I'm reading about a car "jacking down" over bumps meaning the shock doesn't rebound fully after a consecutive bumps and will just rest on the bumpstops as a result of the too-stiff rebound. On the other side I don't want my ride to be bouncy and floaty at speed.

Well, you were pretty specific what you wanted in your thread, so I didnt post my $.02...

I had koni coils on my last car- mkv gti. I was 3/4 stiff in the rear (cant remember how many clicks), and between 1/2 and 3/4 stiff in the fronts. It drove very nice that way- better than when I had them just about full stiff all around, and better than 1/2 stiff all around.

I adjusted my suspension on my A4 the same way (stiffer in the rear)- even though they arent koni's, I like having the rear end a little more firm.

So, imo start at a little over half in the fronts and about 3/4 in the rear and go from there.

Everyone's 2 cents appreciated! Thanks for the advise I think I will set mine up similar to that

I had these coilovers on my old b7 a4 and I liked them for the most part. When it comes to reliability, i feel that these coilovers are extremely well made and are a good choice for the money, but in the end I would have went with a slightly stiffer setup, or at least one that had the potential of being stiffer. I adjusted my set twice, resetting them to what I thought was the stiffest setting, and I found that it was a very comfortable at cruising/highway speeds. I wouldn't describe them as floaty, but they definitely were not stiff enough to call them sporty. In fact, the first time they were on the car, they felt less stiff than my OEM sport suspension (hence the reason i adjusted the second time).

I found that the car was bouncy at low speeds, but only over small bumps in the road. I often felt like the car would raise up (float) and there was a delay in the time it would take to come back down if that makes sense, and this was at the stiffest setting. Again, at highway speeds, it was very comfortable and i barely felt any float, but i was looking for something sportier in between the Koni's and something like a Bilstein pss9.

When it came to cornering, i was not impressed at all. I had added a RS4 sway bar, yet i still felt some sway when I would take turns in a spirited manner - again this was at the stiffest setting. I feel that Koni's are made to maintain a slightly more sporty feel over OEM sport suspension. You may notice a bigger difference coming from non sport suspension. If you are looking for something that has a more solid and sporty feel, I would suggest another set of coilovers, potentially KW's. In the end i was happy with how they sat, and how they felt on the highway, but i always felt like i never got my money out of them when it came to cornering

    Hope this helps

I'm reading up a lot on suspension tuning and I think people confuse adjustable rebound with damper. Setting the rebound on full stiff will definitely make the car float after bumps because the shock will take longer to extend back into its normal length. I'm also reading that the rebound just be stiffer than the damper as it will deal with added kinetic energy from the "bump" phase. Im going to play around with the shocks and get a feel for the stiffness of the compression and try to set the rebound slightly stiffer than that. I will definitely not have them set on full rebound stiffness.

Have them on my b7. Got them a year ago brand new.
Springs are too soft for any type of performance driving.
They are comfy if that's your thing. If I want to rip up the canyons, I drive my corrado with pss9's, if I want to cruise with the wife, I drive the b7. I will from now on, stick to what I know.....h&r or bilstein
This kit was made for the masses.
