What is the biggest oil filter which will fit B6 A4 1.8T?

I picked up a 2004 A4 160k. Car had single owner 100% dealer serviced. Its in great condition all around. However i can see from the service records that she seemed to just follow the Audi service schedule and only had the oil changed about every 8-10k. When i opened the oil cap i can see brown deposits. So I'm going to follow the Auto-RX treatment for this engine.

After the treatment is finished then i'll use Rotella T6 exclusively.

I know the Mann 940/25 oil filter is poplar in here because its slightly larger than the stock filter. The question is what it the largest filter that will work? Has anyone used the Mann w950/4. Its the same diameter and has the same bypass valve spec but its about 1.7" longer. I measured the space below the current filter and the frame and there is at least 2-1/2" of clearance so it should fit. Also the WP1144 may fit too it's 3/4" larger diameter and slightly longer.

Thanks in advance for any advice or opinions.

your best bet is to call your local dealer and find out. Audi had a recall on their oil filters and went with bigger sizes. The reason why i know this is because i just got my oil changed, the new oil filters almost fits the whole quart bottle of oil. They upgraded to these new filters due to sludge buildup and they also changed the oil specs for warranty issues, which could also help you in deciding what weight of oil to use.

I had forgotten about this post but i ordered a Mann 950/4 from Amazon. 12$.

It's huge! However it fit just fine

It held about an additional 1/2 qt oil over the previous Bosch that I had on there.

I am still researching for an even larger filter from donaldson. I found one that has a larger diameter and length but the bypass valve pressure is a bit lower than the 36psi on the 950/4.

I would think a lower by pass pressure would not be that big of a deal. If you changed your oil regularly there would be no need for the bypass valve to activate and bypass the filter unless you have something really bad going on inside your engine.

Yep car quest has this big fat filter for the same price as the medium, it's 7.20. I'm going with this big filter and going to run out this last jug of of motul as long as possible before switching to t6 I think... Probably get a black stone report.

I think that filter is the same as the Mann 950/4. I had heard somewhere that one company makes them all and each of the major filter makers just stamp their own name on the side.

So far this filter has about 2000mi on it. Im going to send out a sample to blackstone at 3k and decide if im going to do an oil/filter change or let it ride for another 1000mi.

If I remember the year right, you can run a 78 ford diesel oil filter. Its MUCH larger than the larger 1.8T OEM filter for the a4/passat and requires a much larger fill on oil due to its size.
