    2009 Audi A4 starting problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

Fairly new Audi owner and new member to the group. Leaving work yesterday my Audi wouldnt start. Everytime I tried it would click 6 or 7 times. Everything would power on, the car just wouldnt stop. The noise I'm assuming was coming from the starter. I've read it may also be a loose ground bolt? Anyone had this problem? How hard is it to change the starter? I was in a suit yesterday and unable to get under the car. Any help is appreciated!

Sounds more likely to be the battery. If it is the original, it would be about time to replace.

Thanks for the response. Even if I have power in the car? You still think it may be the battery? I'll check the battery today.

Yes. Try turning off the air/MMI/stereo/internal and external lights, or anything else that may be draining the battery on ignition... Did you get a jump yesterday?

The car I tried to jump it with battery was corroded to hell and I didnt really put much effort because I didnt think that was going to be the problem with the power in the car. I gave it a quick zap and kinda gave up. Not the easiest thing to do in a suit with humidity.

I'm a convert from american cars and seems like Im learning from scratch. I'm assuming the battery is in the trunk. Pretty straight forward replacement?

This is one of the reasons why I always turn everything off before shutting off the car. I've never had to change a battery in any of my cars in the past 20 years.....it's a bit OCD but I think the extra draw from accessories during ignition has a detrimental effect on the battery.

had the same issue a few months ago on my 09, was a bad battery and yea theres enough power to light up the inside but just not to start the engine.

you dont have to go into the trunk to the actual battery just to jump though, under the hood closer to the windshield theres a little plastic cover with a + symbol, open that and theres a power bolt there you can clamp onto, and just clamp the ground to a bolt or something metal on the body and you're good.

as for OEM vs aftermarket, im told the battery has to be coded in and only the OEM ones have the code, so an aftermarket one will still work, but the car's computer might not recognize it as a new battery and might throw an error or something. but i'd just go with the OEM its not really much more than a good aftermarket one. but yea its been like 4 yrs and with all the electronics in our cars im sure it uses up a lot, i was told by a friend that works at the dealer thats pretty normal 3-4 yrs.

    Hey guys.....

Over the past few months I'd say I had a similar issue where the car "shook" when starting (almost as if it didn't have enough juice to crank...but then it did start). This has only happened probably 3 times in the last month or so. I saw this thread and didn't know if I had the same issue? I was thinking it was something worse. It's a 2011 with 52K miles. So it's high mileage but only 2.5 years old. It's a manual transmission if that makes a difference. Thoughts?

When my battery was DEAD, nothing would turn on. My buddy connected his Mercedes C300 (which has a MASSIVE battery) to the terminals on the front of my car. Everything turned on but the engine refused to start. I turned off all the accessories and tried again with no hope. We had to wait about 20minutes and kept trying till after about two dozen tries it turned on.

So if it's hot and humid, you could try jumping it at night and leaving it for 15min or so while the other car is on.

OEM Battery ONLY, I had some weird issues till I coded my battery. I've changed the battery on my friends A4 2009 and didn't need to code it, the car "learned" it but I did get the same manufacturer. Audi uses a few different battery manufacturers.

Thanks guys, The battery seems to be the issue. I replaced it with an OEM which is actually to my surprise way cheaper than the options at Advance Auto Parts.

something may have stuck or shorted when that came off. try to disconnect the battery fully and leave it for a bit, like 30min-1hr or something, and then reconnect it and see if it all comes back.

Was this indeed a battery issue. Im having the same problem. I try to start- i get a single click. Had triple A come and run some voltage through the battery still no start- just a single click. The guy said the battery was good and the voltage reader was around 13v. I said i only need like 12.6 to start. Still single click and the cig port wasnt getting power. Could my battery just be completly fucked and even with a Jump not enough juice to turn over?

check the cables that go to the battery, the negative post one and then also the positive one, which connects and runs through the whole underbody up to the front.

a few yrs ago i had an issue where my negative post one actually snapped, and i couldnt start or jumpstart anything at all, replaced it with a generic ground cable just to get started, then ordered a used replacement.

and then recently i had an issue with the positive one, it was the whole big harness under the car, apparently mine was corroding or something but it wasn't passing enough power and my battery wouldn't get enough charge so it was acting as if it was a bad alternator.

but i'd check the battery ground cable and all that. it could be a bad starter too, had to replace mine last year too, would do a single click and not turn over. you can check vagcom error codes and it will show you if it's a starter failing to turn or something.
