APR announces an ECU upgrade tune for the RS5 but is it worth it?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So check this out. APR recently announces a ECU tune for the RS5. So for $800.00 you get as much as an 18 horsepower gain and a gain of 16 pounds of torque. Is this really worth it? Has anyone did it yet? I believe this upgrade to be pretty new.

Maybe with an exhaust upgrade and this ECU upgrade it may be worth it but I can't see spending the money on the ECU upgrade alone. So watch the vids and look at the graph charts and let me know your opinions. I have said from day one the RS5 is not short on power but its lacking huge on torque. The torque number needs to be up around 400.

I have the APR ECU upgrade on my RS. I really got it for the removal of the speed limiter.

You will find that the responsiveness of the throttle is greatly increased. The car seems to jump off the line much faster than the stock RS. The shift points are also adjusted, so you're able to keep the car at higher RPMs when driving.

I think it is totally worth it and if you wait around for a deal, you might get it for less money. I got mine on a deal that APR was having, for $700.

APR announces an ECU upgrade tune for the RS5 but is it worth it?

How does the upgrade work on a car with ads?

Does it get applied to all settings or only dynamic drive?

I plan on getting the tune for sure. 100 octane tune and some lighter wheels would go a long way on the 1/4 mile and 60-130 times.

The major feature is indeed the removal of the speed limiter (from Audi, this will cost more than double, and then you don't have any power/torque increase).

Good to hear the response is also better. Indeed not much power gain with N/A cars, but an ECU tune can certainly make your car drive smoother, more efficient, etc when tuned for the fuel you always use (we have 102 Octan overhere), so interesting to watch!

BTW, overhere also Wetterauer, Sportec, SKN, JDE and some others offer similar ECU tunes for the RS5.

Cool Hand, Thanks for the input.. I have a couple of questions (they might be silly but i'm still learning):

    1) do you find that the new ECU increases the Gas mileage? Obviously I didn't buy my RS5 for it's mpg, but it would help if the wallet if the car didn't burn so much gas in the CITY! Trying to understand what everyone means when they say "more efficient"?

    2) Doesn't the ECU upgrade come with Valet mode?

    Thanks

The RS5 programming is a great upgrade. With the EMCS program switching through the cruise control stalk, you can switch from stock, 91 octane or 93 octane performance, 100 octane performance and a valet mode that had a limited power output. We have performed the flash on quite a few RS5's and by far, the acceleration improvement surely outshines that actual dyno performance numbers.

I imagine this would void the warranty, but would Audi would ever be able to discover the ECU upgrade? I am from Orange County and interested in this.

Sorry for the late reply everyone.

The tune is across the board and in all driving modes. You'll only really notice them in dynamic though.

I haven't found any MPG savings. All assuming you drive the car the same exact way after the tune, yes you might see minimal MPG savings, but not nearly enough to off set the cost of the tune it's self.

Yes Valet mode is included. Very nice feature, although you need to remember that you're in valet mode. pulling out on to a busy road in valet mode could be dangerous. The car performs more like Honda Civic in reverse.

As far as I know, Audi can scan the computer and recognize that you have a tune on the ECU. At this point, the information could be logged in their computer system and if one day you have an engine issue, they could point the blame at the Tune. This is why I am having my ECU flashed back to stock before I go in for service and then re flashed when its back from service.

This is exactly what I was thinking based on what we've seen and heard for feedback on the APR 4.2 FSI tunes. It's not just about the peak hp/tq gains but also the throttle response, speed limiter removal, program switching, available options, etc.

I thought the APR tune can be selected to "stock". Is that mode still visible to audi scanner, or is it hidden? Thanks!

Still visible. Stock just runs the OEM ECU software. File size and md5 hash are still different.
