Checking on a cars service history with Audi?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, I'm looking at buying a B6 and have a rather general question. I have the VIN# of a specifica car and want to check with Audi to see what's been done, service-wise. Do I call up ANY dealership and speak to the service desk or is there a better procedure for this? I'm sure I'm not the first to have done this so please let me know the best way get some info from Audi.

    Thanks in advance!

Yes, it's at one of those smaller used car dealerships. They actually sent me the carfax. It doesn't list the TB/WP or any other real service, but then again, whomever owned this car before the dealer obviously took care of it.

It looks super clean and well taken care of. I would call you local dealer or stop by with the VIN and they should be able to look up if there are any TSB's on it and provide you with any dealer history.

Audi $tealer$hips will be very reluctant to give you any info, especially for free...

They tend to track the parts you buy from them...for warrenty related issues should they arise...

Yea, I saw that. Obviously, I'll do my best to check it out when I drive the 3 hours there but I'm not a "body guy". It looks to have been repaired properly and I'm hoping that hitting a parked car means a low speed impact.

For comparison, my current honda civic was involved in a similar accident, but at speed in an intersection. It was repaired and documented. 70k mi later, no issues, and everything lines up properly.

    Thanks, I'll do that.

Well, I guess the worst they can say is "No". We'll see what happens.

I guess I could call Curry's Auto (the shop) and see what they've actually done to the car.

Yeah if it was slow speed no worries.. When I bought my A4 in 2006 one of the dealer told me they can only see all services that were done at their local audi dealer. They can't see services done but they can check if a recall was completed.

I hope it was low speed. No real way to know though so I am taking a chance if I buy it. I'll check w/ my audi dealer on recalls. Thanks!

And yes, I am bringing a laptop/vagcom w/ me to scan for issues. Anything I should be on the look out for?

Its just too bad you can't find out how many miles the oil was changed because the 1.8s are known for oil sludge.

Scan for everything but big parts would be engine, transmission look for Hvac make sure you dont see any AC servo issue I know its small but again these cars have issues like that.

Call AoA and they should tell you if they have a service record on file.

if you're just trying to buy a car off the street of from a corner lot or something you'll get no help.
VAG's policy in general is that they will not release any information regarding a vehicles history IF the repair was paid for by said previous owner.
They will usually give you the records of anything that was done under warranty or per a recall or TSB, as long as there is no personally identifiable information attached.
The policy isn't really mandated by any specific law I don't think, because not all dealerships go by it- but the big ones typically do and they tend to blur the poicy heavily if they have the car for sale themselves.
When you do get the info you'll get a headache because it's usually just a printout that lists labor codes that are very hard to decipher and part numbers.

Gotcha, thanks for that. I'm actually a data security analyst by trade so I'm very familiar w/ the "dos and don'ts" of PII and ePHI. Hopefully, they don't give me too much trouble.

This probably won't help the OP as this thread is pretty old, but perhaps others might find it useful:

make a (free) account at mycarfax.com (use a throwaway email address if your tinfoil hat is leaky)

Add the VIN of any car to your 'garage', and you will be able to see the service history from all the dealers, as well as a lot of independents.

Some records are more detailed than others. But it is good resource to check, for example, if that socal car was actually in mammoth or tahoe most of its life.
