    Tire Size help..18x8.5, 18x9.5 B7

So I picked up a set of Privat Legende wheels in 18x8.5 and 18x9.5 et30 and I'm trying to find out what tire size to run and keep the AWD system happy. I tried a set of 245/40/18's on the rear but they were just a little too big and I don't want to do a pull on the rears as I think it's just the fender liners that is the issue.

So most likely go with a 235/40/18 in the rear but what would I run in the front that wouldn't affect the AWD and also won't look stupid as far as having a stretched rear tire but no stretch on the front???

    TIA

Car is B7 A4 Avant Quattro

    KneeDragger,

My names Paul im the local rep for Need 4 Speed Motorsports here on Audizine.

The main concern on the B7 is the rear fitment since mostly you will see these car with wheels up to a 18x8.5 which will fit perfectly with a 235/40/18

Now since your going to be running a larger wheel

What i recommend is you to run a 235/35/18 all around

it will give the tire enough of a stretch that it can clear the rear liners

It also will even out the overall look of the car

the overall diameter would be a 24.5"

with a 235/40/18 tire the overall diameter would be 25.4"

the additional 0.9" of clearance will really help the car plus it would keep everything even enough that you will not activate your AWD which is linked to your ABS.

Another option would be to roll the rear fenders for added clearance also which a local shop here in Southern California can do for you and should not cost you much at all.

Here are a few images of a 18x9.5 rim with a 235/35/18 tire so you can see the stretch.

    Hey Paul,

Thank you very much for the explanation on my options and certain benefits of each options. My problem lies with trying to have a decent ride and using the 40 over a 35 series tire. A concern that I also have with running a 235 all the way around as there will be stretch on the rear 9.5 wheels but on the from 8.5 wheel the tire will not have any or as much stretch and the car will look awkward with that stance of how it sits.

My problem with getting fenders rolled is I've seen too many horrible jobs and as I do body work myself I don't want to have to fix the and repainted my fenders. The car is an 06 so the blend job is not something that's going to happen cleanly. This car is kind of a budget build for me also and I guess that's why I am trying to fit a wheel that doesn't really fit my application.

So if I run the 235/40/18 I would be affecting my center diff compared to running a 235/35/18? I believe what I looked up showing a 235/40/18 at 25.4 and the 225/40/18 at a 25.1 is that too far off that it will upset the AWD system?

Sorry this is my first time trying to pull something like this off, I'm use to running different oem type wheels and I also have some set up for my tracks cars but none of them were ever AWD.

    Kneedragger,

The main issue is using a 40 profile wheel that overall diameter on the car will cause it to rub regardless if the width is decreased, reason being is the inner clearance of your audi may not allow for a 40 profile tire due to and remember a 18x9.5 rim for the rear.

Now i understand your concern for the fender rolling and that is your opinion on it however you choose once again it is your car. Since fender rolling is out as a option the only other options you have is to

    1. stretch the tires which depending on your taste might look weird but will work to fit the car

    2. not use the wheels you purchased and buy another set.

remember your AWD vehicles can compensate for a 3% difference due to tire wear aslong as they are 3% within each other tire diameter wise then you are fine.

    Best,

    Best,

You think with stretched/rolled fenders I can fit the 235/40 all the way around?

Can you shoot me the info for who does your fender rolling or may be some cars that he has done?

    Re: Tire Size help..18x8.5, 18x9.5 B7

235/40/18 is OEM size. It'll totally fit, especially stretched on a 9.5.

    If this helps....
There was a write up on a B6 S4 Avant in brilliant red that was running a 19x9.5 all around....
    The thread was called...
" Little Red Grocery Getter " it was on A-Zine from an article on www.carthrottle.com in 2011.
There were some specs discussed but a lot of pics which may help...
I'm looking it up on the desktop as I tapatalk ..

Found it... It was rocking VMR's V710's in a 19x9.5 / ET 33 / shied with 245/35/19 tires and suspended on KW's Variant 3 coil overs

Hope this helps, but do link to it for the pics

PS.. That would be an Avant that I would trade in my S4 for.....

Yeah I'm going to buy a used set of 235/40's from the regionals and if that doesn't fit then I will go for a little tuck & roll. I tried a 245 and that would be ideal with a good roll so if I end up rolling the fenders I will bump up to a 245

Have you considered just running 18x8.5 all around, then the 245/40 would not rub.
On my stock 18x8's I ran 245/40's, I will be going to an 18x9.00 with a 30et , tires will be 245/40's which should be fine....
Have you also checked the site
www.willtheyfit.com where you can upload current fitments or future fitments.
Of course how low will affect the size but for me just 1inch or less from stock is perfect...
