Know Your Rights | Window Tinting Exemptions (RCW 46.37.430)

What: Washington State Law restricts the degree to which you can lower light penetration or add light reflectivity via window tint to the front driver and passenger windows on a motor vehicle.
Your Rights: With a "doctor's order," you can request a waiver/exemption to this limitation. The expectation is the letter would suffice as an on-scene exemption for a citing officer or grounds for dismissal should a ticket be issued and the case taken to court.
Why: This provides reasonable exception to the rule should you require window tint values below the state-defined limit, for the purpose of providing a medical benefit. In this specific case, my wife has a preexisting skin condition which can lead to skin cancer and several medical procedures which she continues to undergo for sun exposure.

Can't you get a tint that blocks virtually all UV but doesn't block all spectrum to the point it is illegal? For example, 3M™ Crystalline Automotive Window Films claims 99.9% UV protection (SPF 1700+).

The WSP declined my request to pre-approve the letter for any specific level of tint, but the law is written open enough that I'm going to risk taking it to court. So while I'm only going for 15% to get a much denser UV filtering affect than the 35% film, I believe that having the doctor's order to specifically UV block your car windows will certainly make your case an easier one :)
