B6 A4 Dual Intercooler Euro OEM - conerns regarding high boost

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    As an alternative to
    - upgraded single SMIC' (quite expansive for the little gain in cooling capacity)
    - larger FMIC (bumper mods, loss of stock look; but lots of cooling capacity)
    - dual Euro stock FMIC (obviously double the IC capacity, much more than upgraded SMIC; stock look and fit)

My only concern: Do the stock IC (with their plastic side tanks?) hold up to high boost pressure (say 22 psi), or do they tend to blow apart?

02 Allroad 6 spd, Kraftwerk Turbo TM6, 750cc, 3" MAF, piggy, FMIC, CM stg 5 (hate). 30 psi at 3600 rpm. Needs stronger rods (coming).

Mine started leaking shortly after I went to the 20+ lbs of boost. I believe Alexza4 had his end cap blow completely off. With that being said I know others have successfully used the dual intercooler set-up with higher boost levels. Guess it's a crap shoot.

    Nice. B6?
    Size of heat exchange (wxhxl)?
    In/out diameter? tubing diameter?
    Source?

Looks like stock is 200 cu in. 300 and up seems suitable for my 350 cHP power goal.
$500 and up namebrand SMIC seem sure bet
Could NOT find CXRacing or similar or GSP or Godspeed/ebay larger SMIC for 1.8T as a low cost alternative (I have 4 ebay FMIC running since several years, NO problems)

    Boost Factory: 8.1" x 8" x 6" = 389 cu in
    Tyrolsport: 10" x 8.1" x 4.5" = 365 cu in
    Eurojet: 8" x 8" x 5" = 320 cu in
    Taco cooler: 7" x 8.25" x 5.125" = 305 cu in
    Kraut-Burner: 8" x 8.4" x 4.5" = 302 cu in
    Godspeed: 8" x 7.5" x 5" = 300 cu in
    Forge: 8.3" x 8.3" x 3.9" = 269 cu in
    Stock: 7.25" x 8" x 3.5" = 203 cu in
FMIC ebay: 22x7x2.5= 385 cu in
FMIC ebay: 20x6x2.5= 300 cu in
Dual Europe stock: 400 cu in

Those dimensions look like the intercoolers for the VW GTI. I think the A4 1.8T OEM intercooler is 2.5"x7"x9.5" for a total of 166 cu in (although that could be the B5 dimensions).

Edit: Just found the OEM B6 dimensions and it is even less: 214mm x 192mm x 65mm for a whopping total of 163 cu in. A single Tyrolsport would provide more density than two OEM SMIC's. The B6 Tyrolsport is 360 cu in.

Fwiw, the b7 uses a dsmic system and I think it would be easier to adapt a passenger side SMIC from a b7 that it would trying to acquire a euro SMIC setup.

I really like the IDEA of the factory look if the OEM DSMICs but in practice its a lot of expense for not that much better cooling capacity. I honestly think a single upgraded Apikol or tyrolsport SMIC would be a better use of money.

Could very well be; came across a post that had most of those numbers for comparison value.

Another concern of the DSMIC setup is additional pressure loss across the cores and fittings, meaning your turbo would have to work even harder to maintain ~20psi at the manifold.

Suddenly, I find myself very concerned of how my 10 year old intercooler is doing with my stage 1 boost levels.

If you want stealth get a ER and have the core black anodized.

You can't see my core behind the lower grill. With black powder coated pipes, black couplers and the black core the only visible component is the SS hose clamps.

Go buy a Honda if you want cheap parts.

Keep your eyes glued to the classifieds if you have a tight budget. I picked up 2 racetec Intercoolers on the cheap. One for 400 and one for 250.

I am running 4 cars with FMIC. Not one kit (including clamps, hoses, pipes) was more than $300 new. All working perfect.
Only deviation (did not have the time or energy to guess) when I 'caved under pressure' was my the FMIC for my 2.7T Allroad and paid the $500 big buck for the JHM since they were the only ones confirming fit on my manual AR; so pretty rare application.

A run of the mill B6 A4 1.8T kit over $350 needs serious questioning.
And if someone is hinting at 'efficiency'. Well yes, there are differences. Say the best in world is 5% more efficient than the ebay cheapo: add 20% more core volume and physics hands you the win.

here's a very nice ER Sport FMIC in the classifieds that was posted a few days ago. If I didn't just purchase my treadstone tr6 and piping kit just last week, i would get this. actually, i'm still considering it....haha. little trimming, good fit, and great reviews. you could probably still fit your grills and look stock.

Have you ever logged any of these 4 cars? Better question, have you ever actually used a high-end FMIC on one of these cars, or are you just basing off the fact that the car runs with your 300$ FMIC, so it obviously must be a quality core....

You're quick to say that any kit over 350 is basically a waste.... maybe to someone with a stage 1 tune. Put your 300$ kit on a GTRS or higher and see how well your car performs after a few hard pulls.

You need to stop and think about what you are saying here.

I did the same as jjvwg. Bought the treadstone tr18t and the crxracing piping. Great combo for 500. I plan on painting it black with a few thin coats of radiator paint to make it stealthy. That's for my wife's car. I picked up a used evoms intercooler with piping for my car for 300 shipped from an az member. Keep an eye on the classifieds
