    2006 A6 - battery replacement?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I suspect the battery is getting weak. MMI is acting up.
Voltage after full charge was only 12.4 V the next morning.
With ignition on, quickly dropping to 12.0.

Looks like the original Audi battery is still in.

Can I buy any battery (that fits the car), or does the 'intelligent' battery control require to install a 'special Audi' battery from Audi?

If other than "OEM Audi", what are decent batteries that work?

It takes a regular car battery (94R size group) available at any auto parts store.

12 volts is what its supposed to have. Your amps is more what you to be checking into, most the auto parts stores can do a load test on your battery with it still in the car.

Hopefully it isnt your ESP module like you were thinking in your last post. Ive taken the mmi panel off before on an a6 but only taken the complete console out of an newer a4 or I would have tried to help you out on that.

    Charge overnight.
12.4 V in the morning is lower than what a fresh charged battery should show.
Drop to 12.0 in very short time is NOT normal.
After an hour of wait, put the charger back on: should only 40% capacity!
Battery seems origina (it is an Audi battery), 7 years may be time to change.

Just careful since the A6 ahs the 'intelligent' battery control module.

The ESP definately has issues as well (I suspect the yaw sensor under the center console), since ABS, cruise control, auto level ALL have codes referring to ABS with refers to ESP.

Don't have the Bentley for the instructions to remove the center console/armrest. If someone has: please send.

You need to take out the gear-shift leather surrounding, together with the position indicator. Then take out the front ash-tray and its bottom section - there are two screws to take out. Under the centre arm-rest, in the CD compartment / drink-cup holder, take out the rubber bottom layer and unscrew the screw you find there. Then pull out the rear center vent and take out the large screw holding the center arm-rest. Pull it out a bit.

Then unsnap the sides of the entire centre console and put them aside. There may be some more screws elsewhere, which I can't remember. But you need to lift the rear part first, just a few inches, and then you can take out the front part of the console. Remember to unclip all the electrical connectors - parking brake, gear selector indicator, MMI controls, start/stop button if you have it.

Here is a link that has good pics.... You have to scroll way down to the last post

so if standard battery is doable:

    a) being in the trunk and therefore "indside", where is the battery venting to? Is there a long vent house going through the trunk floor?
    Or is sealed battery needed?

    b) When going to Autozone and they offer to install the battery: are any codes (radio, or else) needed to be re-entered? Or is it just 'disconnect, remove, install, connect' and go?

Have this one in mind for $145:

    Duralast Gold/Battery
    Part Number: H8-DLG
    Warranty: 5 YR

I dont think the 2005 or newer have a radio code unless you have a in-dash CD player and that number should be a 4 digit code that also on the spare wheel well and the owners manual

Its has a vent, it almost looks like a wire. it goes out of the back bumper. its this one. just sticks right in

I spoke to someone at the dealership and they told me since my battery wasn't an "Audi" battery, my car was in shut down mode. What does that mean exactly...?

I think it doesn't have to be Audi battery, but after you replace it, it needs to be coded in VCDS, where you enter the brand and serial number of the battery, so the battery regulator knows that new battery has been installed and to reset it's values. That should be enough.
I have also read somewhere, that an external 12V power supply should be connected to the car during the replacement.

These are not standard automotive battery but a deep cell type of technology. Buy from Audi!

    Yes, coding needed:
