Transmission fluid temp without full VAG-COM?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

Anybody know how to check transmission fluid without a VAG-COM cable and VCDS? I've poked at the Torque app on my OBD2 adapter but none of the built-in transmission temp methods work (1 and 2 are blank, method 3 tracks coolant temp exactly, both hover around 100-102 C).

I was looking at maybe buying a cheapo cable off Amazon and using VCDS-lite, which seems like it includes transmission temperature. Anybody go this route?

I have a little mechanical groan and chirp when changing gears, sounds like a servo or something rather than the gears themselves. I'd love to know if a recent accident affected my transmission fluid levels so I can rule that out.

    Thanks, Marcus

I know this is old, but did you ever figure out how to read the trans fluid temp? I've got the torque-pro app as well but the Transmission temperature is not listed as available. I wanted to change my fluid which requires filling at a certain temperature, but I can't read the temperature!!

I've wondered the same thing..since I do do not have VCDS yet. Has anyone attempted to heat the fluid to the proper temp, then pump it into the tranny?
I'm assuming this is messy & possibly dangerous, but in theory would it work to heat it, use an IR thermometer to measure the temp, then quickly pump it into the tranny to the appropriate level?

You can read the transmission temp with the $8 cable and free software

I completed this process on my tip with the cheapo cable, I cant remember the exact location but it's a coded number (took a minute of navigating the software while hooked up to the car)

Its not so much of heating the fluid as it is heating the transmission up as it pulls the fluid through (it will suck in more fluid running as its getting warmer).
Tricky..the sweet spot is where you want to be otherwise the fluid wont be right, this could be bad if you have to much or too little..(with no dip stick to check I was a little OCD).

Remember re-install the filler plug before shutting off the car or it will pour back out...I did this

I have the torque pro app and the elm 327 and it shows trans temp on my b7 but how accurate would that be.

It's a small obd blutooth adapter reader that is small enough you can leave in the obd port. It's like $20 on amazon or ebay and with $5.99 torque pro from Google play it's awesome. It's tells alot like trans temp cat temps in both banks 0-60 times and alot more as well as reads and clears cels

ELM327 is actually the company that makes the chipset inside of it. There are tons of companies who sell the dongles -- Bluetooth or wifi. They're about $30 shipped to your door. Some are sold with a USB cable as well.

I use one with my BMW -- it allows for coding and reading codes.

Okay i think that is what I have (OBDII bluetooth that stays plugged in and pairs with my phone via Torque Pro).

BUT the trans temp is not an active display. In Torque Pro it is not a selectable reading. Is there something special I need to do to 'activate' it? Program it manually? Maybe it works in the B7 but not the B6?

    Thanks

Exactly what I have..I installed a nexus 7 in dash, so the elm stays plugged in all the time and I can pull up the app and have heads up display with real time info as well as scan and clear fault codes while you're driving. But it should be fairly accurate since it is reading info directly from the ecu..there is a little lag but it should be pretty close.

The elm bluetooth reader was 12.99 on amazon and the app was 5 or 6 bucks. I figured for less than $20 bucks I would give it a try and not be heart broken when it doesn't work haha...so far I am pretty happy with it. In no way does it replace vag com, but it is a fun little toy.

I was thinking of doing this: drain the trans fluid when cold. Measure how much came out and refill with same amount.

Over time some will evaporate. It's not a bad idea but I'm not sure it will work. Also cold atf is thicker than warm so there might not be enough room for the amount needed that's why I think you have to put it in at a certain temp and if it's too hot you risk over filling.

It may show oil temp but it does not show transmission temp. There are two methods to measure it on the app, neither was supported in my case.

Will this work on the B7? or only B6?

I had assume below will not work on B7 due to CAN bus
Site says Won't work with CAN-Bus vehicles
    http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/index.html

But if it did you can get trans temp:
    Select Control Module > 02 Auto Trans > 08 Meas. Blocks > Group 004

    http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/m...easblocks.html

Also looks like you can also check the software version.

Just not sure which dumby cable to buy and at this point I am out of time. I need to figure out what fluid ZF6 or ZF8 and then will just have to use a IR temp gun:

I have the same issue...just shows a dash. I did not start car but think it should show it with key in on position.

    EDIT,
just bought Ross Tech Cable. Now "only" $200.

This is how I changed the tip fluid in my S4 30k miles ago.
I don't have access to the electronic devices.
So I simply let the car cool overnight. I proceed to drain the trans fluid. Measured how much came out. I filled it up with the same amount of new trans fluid. ...trans work just fine.

I had probably another 1/4 quart come out on the floor over the week it has been sitting with pan off. With my luck 6qts wont even be enough to fill it. Hope I am wrong. Sick of working on this car.

I don't mind doing the "little " stuff. Its the timing service that will be above my pay grade! Simply don't know why Audi designed the engine they way they did regarding this future service.
