Immobilizer light flashing and no starting

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so I drove my car to work today, parked it and went inside. Nothing unusual at all. I come out of work and go to star my car and it cranks and runs for a second or two. I realize the immobilizer light is flashing orange at me. I got a ride home to get my computer and other keys and come back. The spare doesn’t work and neither does the little plastic one. (Forget it technical term) I scanned the car and got the fowling codes listed below. Now I am at home and my car sits at work. What is my next step from here? I have done some searching but haven’t had to much luck. Any help would be amazing. Thanks.

Have you installed any electronics in your car recently like an RNS-E or anything of that sort?

look up member "imnuts" he's got a very well documented procedure in his signature.

but immobilizer coil may need replacement, did you check ross-tech yet? http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01128

    This is what Ross-Teck says:

    01128 - Immobilizer Pickup Coil (D2)
    Possible Symptoms
    • Immobilizer Warning Light flashing
    • Immobilizer active (Engine shuts OFF after 2-3 Seconds)
    Possible Causes
    • Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Immobilizer Pickup Coil (D2) faulty
    • Immobilizer Pickup Coil (D2) faulty
    • Immobilzier Control Module faulty
    Possible Solutions
    • Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Immobilizer Pickup Coil (D2)
    • Check/Replace Immobilizer Pickup Coil (D2)
o Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB)
    Special Notes
    • Pickup Coils for Immobilizer 2 and 3 Systems should read ~23.5 Ohms.

Has anyone on ever replaced a pickup coil, or are there any write ups on how to replace it?

I've read of others having a problem with the pickup coil. Given the fault code, I'd guess that is the problem as I think a bad key pair returns a different fault code. You could try repairing the keys with the immobilizer, but I don't think that will work if the coil is bad. I'd grab a multimeter and check the resistance, or do it with VCDS if possible. It looks like the coil may be part of the ignition switch, if that's the case, here's a DIY

You shouldnt even need to re-pair the keys/immo after replacing the pickup coil I don't think. But if you do:

I just called my local stealership and they told me I need to order a complete new switch with the barrel and the new pickup coil plus one new key for 260. The said I can't just by the pickup coil. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

I think the coil is only available as part of the ignition switch, but you may be able to separate the switch and coil and install the new coil on the old switch. Also, if you were getting a new key, you'd need a new door and trunk lock that matched, unless it was coming setup for your VIN, in that case, I think you can order the switch without a key from what I could find.

I guess it's VIN matched they said it will take 3-5 days to get it in from Monday. But my biggest convern is will this fix my problem? Could this be a ECU problem. It's just so wierd that it came out of nowhere.

It's not ECU, it's the pickup coil and pretty sure it's separate from the ign switch, but comes WITH the switch?..never looked it up individually. But yes, the IGN switch is ordered by vin# cut to the key you already have.

If I had to guess, based on other codes stored for the immobilizer and possible solutions, this is where I'd look.

Did you try recoding your keys? My car will sometimes crank, start for 2 seconds then shut off. I'll have to do this 1-3 times then usually it starts and runs no problem. As of late my immobilizer light has been flashing at me while idling and some times while driving.

Only happens sometimes and I haven't put much effort into figuring it out. I might try and have the keys reprogrammed and see if it makes a difference.

I haven't tried that yet because I am not getting ant codes that say the keys are the problem. I just pulled my ECU out and I am mailing it off tomorrow to have the immoblizer disabled.

Dude--- the KEY (chip contained inside) is one of the main parts of the immobilizer. But, more likely it's the pickup coil on the ign switch. Personally I would have done the Immo defeat at the cluster- there's a certain way to do it at the ECU to not get a flashing IMMO light with the annoying beep. The hierarchy of the Immo goes: Key to Ign switch to Cluster and finally the ECU gets the OK from the cluster.
If the defeat isn't done right the cluster still wont get an OK from the ign switch and you'll be annoyed. It'll work, but it'll be annoying.

I have already installed an new pickup coil. And that didn't help at all. How do I do the defeat at the cluster?

Just send it to someone (Tom / Mpower ) to edit the EEprom. I really don't see the benefit of doing it at the ECU (unless it's part of a tune/ package) when it's so much easier to do it at the cluster.
Tom (or half a dozen other guys here) can do it, Pm him, ( user name ' Mpower ' ):
    http://www.speedosolutions.com/

I'd offer to do it, but the 'adapter' cable I used to use to connect right to the cluster went bad a long time ago, and since then I lost all my info on what the Immo address / values are supposed to be in the eeprom.

Ok so I got my ECU back and the car runs now but like you said rollerton its annoying. My hazards are just going off. Is there any way I can turn the alarm hazards off via rosstech. I really don’t want to have to mail off any more parts I can’t afford to have any more down time with the car.
