New to Audi, trying to get a read on the best looks for those of us who still like the blacked-out/murdered out style. Really trying to get the Audizine community opinion on their favorite wheel looks overall. Just different enough from what I like on BMWs, that searching the web w/o seeing comments for why Audi drivers liked one design style over another, just isn't cutting it for me.

First stop, rims. I see a lot of 5-spoke on S5 and am wondering if that is some Audi cultural thing; something that harkens back to a beloved Audi original? I generally prefer a >5 spoke design, but want to respect Audi traditions as well in my upgrades. I have the 5-spoke 19" rims on mine and I'm not a HUGE fan. They're nice, but not really my style. I tried to get them deleted from the invoice, but I got what was on the lot :).

What rims are most coveted for making the S5 look more aggressive and sure footed in its shoes? My guess too is that Quattro drivers avoid staggered fitments :). Not very rotation friendly :).
    • Avoid paying for real 3-piece wheels. Strong wheels that can stand up to daily street hazards.
    • Great matte or glossy black look (leaning towards matte - like my old VMR718s).
    • Fill the wheel wells as much as possible, w/o taking too much rubber off the road.
    • Find the right balance of parts to give me the same chills I get when I see these pics:

I'm also obsessed with some of the /drive segments like this one. Great production values.

If /drive could be a tad more organized and bring Matt Farah into some of the other segments more often like After Drive and Big Muscle, it would be the best car enthusiast/motorsport show around. Matt is just a perfect car journalist and is funny as hell.

I am obsessed as well, especially Drive Clean. He also has many excellent videos on his own YouTube channel AMMONYC, which boggle the mind. Larry is a good guy, I've chatted with him a few times and he is literally a god at what he does. I own several of his products and must say he really puts the time and R&D into everything he makes. That and he has OCD like no other.

I personally am a fan of black-on-black, however I do think gunmetal/dark silver looks good on almost any color, style dependent of course. Mops kills it with his setup.

For me, Bknewtype has the best looking "blacked-out" wheels. The 5 segment stye matches with the 5's theme too. (Though he'd prob tell you to get something else to maintain exclusivity )

BK, hope you don't mind me linking to your pics...

hahhh! dont mind at all. im flattered actually :)<3

buttttt! the wheels are not blacked out. they are "dolphin grey", or matte gunmetal. i honestly dont like black on black too much cause then, well, all u see is a big black blotch! for a black car i would go with a dark gunmetal so there is some contrast but still retain a dark look

OP, do you like mesh wheels? my old car had the tsw nuburgrings and i loved those wheels. they are available in matte gunmetal as well

Nod, what I should have said was best look for a blacked-out car. I agree with your opinion about black on black, you need a slight contrast to show the details imo, which is why I like yours.

Not so much as not rotation friendly, as staggered setups can eat up the quattro system. It is sensitive to differing wheel/tire sizes front-to-rear.

This was my A5 with its Winter Shoes on. I liked the look...but couldn't use these on my S5. Now being used on the A4 in the Winter.

Any votes for 20" vs. 19" on B8/B8.5 S5? Too little rubber?

I've never had issues with 20s on the S5, and I live in SoCal with horrible roads. Unless you're a weight weenie, go for aesthetics; go 20".

Classic armchair expertism. Can you explain this a little further? What part of the "quattro system" are you referring to when you say it gets eat up by staggered setups... And are you even familiar with A5/S5 staggered setups? 99% of people with staggered setups run either 305/25-20 and 255/30-20 or 305/30-19 and 265/35-19. Both setups are either identical in rolling diameter or within the very conservative 4/32" safety margin. So please, explain to us how the only remaining difference (rolling resistance and rotational momentum) impacts wear on the "quattro system". Some numbers would be nice btw.

mxrz says what I'm thinking. I've read lots about staggered setups impacting understeer and don't want to see this dissolve into chat about handling. My S5's previous owner was running 255/30/19 up front and 305/30/19 rear so a heads up on possible wear from this would be appreciated. Hoping for some solid info here!

So please, explain to us how the only remaining difference (rolling resistance and rotational momentum) impacts wear on the "quattro system". Some numbers would be nice btw.
I said can...I did not say it will. And what makes you an "expert"?

    Here's my source: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=18

And kid...I've been working on cars for the better part of 50 years, both as a hobby, and as an occupation. Spent 15 years as a professional race mechanic, car builder, and instructor. I seriously doubt you have better credentials.

That distinction is irrelevant. The "how" and "why" is important.

Knowledge and firsthand experience with the given subject.

So once again, this is the most popular setup that many of us here have: 305/25-20 rear tires and 255/30-20 front tires. Both have the same 26.0” diameter.

Now that we have that out of the way, the only thing that makes the two different in relation to quattro is the rolling resistance of the wider tire and the rotational mass of the heavier wheel/tire assembly. In theory, this could put more stress and generate more heat at the center differential, however, our Torsen Type C differential is not an old school, clutch pack diff, it is a modern, asymmetrical distribution center diff with a highly efficient helical planetary gearhead design. The marginally higher load from the rear axle due to the heavier/wider wheel/tire assembly is a non-issue for this type of differential as it is asymmetrical in nature and already rear biased. Also, this type of differential manages torque distribution full time, so it is built tough accordingly, with no clutches and no driveline preload requirements.

I know plenty of "seasoned" mechanics and engineers that are dumb and stubborn when it comes to modern technology. They go by shit they learned eons ago, and refuse to keep up with technological progress. My own father included...

Actually the wider rear tire actually has less rolling resistance than the narrow because the weight displacement per unit squared is less.

    Getting back on topic...

My bad, I should have made it clear that I was referring to the sum of both rolling and air resistance, which does increase since air resistance becomes a greater factor at highway+ speeds. I would also think rolling resistance alone depends on the model of the tire and air pressure. A 25 or even 30 series tire at 40'ish PSI deforms very little as it rolls, as opposed to something like bicycle tires, where there is no doubt wider provides less resistance. But car tires, at high speeds, not so much.

We did an amazing setup on an S5 with VMR V710 staggered. 19 x 9.5 front and 19 x 10 rear PSS 255/30ZR19 front and 295/30ZR19 rear. The setup was surprisingly light too.

The front tire was 255/30? Not 255/35?

I was very impressed with the last VMR set and intend to get another set. Talking with the guys at VMR now to pick a style.
