    Which brake pads to choose?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am about to change my brake pads. I've been searching ebay and i'm just getting confused about which to choose. Would it be better buying some like these thats says ceramic coated, or should I just buy the original.

I would like buying from ebay.de or ebay.co.uk

I changed my brakes back in February and had the same questions. I ended up with Hawk HPS pads on OEM Rotors. I had a bad squeal from then for about 2 months but then once they were broken in have not made a sound since. They catch very well and I am much happier with the less brake dust and the dust that does come from them is a much lighter color, almost a brown , which isn't a great look on my black rims but its better than it was. Ive also heard people like Akebono pads a lot and Stoptech makes some good stuff. The OEM pads though are also very good so if you aren't tracking the car you could always just stick with what you got although they are quite dusty.

I use akebono and i love them. they dont catch as much as OEM but still quite well and they dont have the fade that OEM has. Also there is little to no dust which is why i got them.

I just installed Hawk HPS pads. Be certain to bed them per the instructions -- no squeal issues here. I have noticed more dust than stock, though I'm using a drilled/slotted rotor.

They don't seem to bite hard when cold, but once they warm up (which doesn't take long), they grab very well.

    Thanks for the answers guys.

I searhed for Akebono but I can't seem to find them anywhere in Europe, so I have chosen ATE Ceramic pads instead. I hope on a huge reduction in brakedust.

check rockauto for really good prices. i have the posiquiet ceramic pads, very little brake dust compared to OEM, no noise or anything, didnt even have to bed them in or anything they came ready, running em for a year now no issues. of course if you need more stopping power or track pads or something you should check some better ones but for a DD these are perfect.

So you're saying they don't have the initial bite like the OEM pads?

BTW is there a way to get OEM bite & feel with reduced dust?

This is true for the akebonos. Also, it took a few days to get my pedal feel back. At first, it felt like I could press the pedal all the way to the floor and it wouldn't lock the brakes up. I put the pads on with ECS tuning geomet rotors, so the process of removing the coating where the brake pads contact the rotor could have been the cause

ya not quite the sake initial bite but still very good. a good thing if u drive and brake hard there will be significantly less fade on the brakes.

Yeah, the reformulated OEM pads (post-2011?) make less dust but supposedly perform the same. Just make sure you get the new style, not any leftovers from the old style (they might even have the same part number?).

I agree! I just went over to a 2014 Q5 and in 3 weeks almost zero dust on the wheels. So the new improved OEM pads produce a lot less dust but have good initial bite, and stopping performance.

I normally run Hawk Ceramic, but in this case I see no need to change, at least for now.

    Hey Jason @ ESC:

I have used Hawks in the past and hate the dust (I despise having to clean my silver 10+ spoke wheels). Any suggestions for great bite, low dust and zero squeal? Im in a 2010 A4 Avant Premium Plus with Sport Wheels

    Fixed* :)

Have you looked into a ceramic pad? Due to the non metallic formula ceramics are made of they tend to dust less. Unfortunately its impossible for a pad not to dust but the ceramic dust is very light in color so it doesn't stick out as much as normal semi-metallic and metallic brake dust does.

Squealing is mostly due to improper brake bedding. During the break in period/bed in process you need to evenly distribute brake pad material across the rotor face. It's the inconsistencies of brake pad material that will cause the brakes to squeal. Also it's a must to use brake paste on the back of the pads where they touch the caliper/cylinder to absorb vibrations.

Akebono Euro Ceramics seam to be very popular amongst B8 owners you may want to check them out below.
