Hit a dog at 30mph last night...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    EDIT: It wasn't 50mph, it was 50kph (30mph).

Been a while since i posted something here... Been car-less for about 1,5 years now but now I'm back in the A-game with a brand new 2012 Misanored A5 conv 2.0 TFSI S-Tronic S-line. Been driving the car for about three weeks (4500miles or so) now and love it!

However, yesterday I went to my grandmas place to help her out and to wash the car. On the way back home i was driving on a deserted country road and was coming up to a T-junction with the evening sunset in my line of sight so i lifted of and in that exact moment i see something black in the corner of my eye shooting out from the high grass and the second later i just hear a big bang!

Slamed the brakes and "OH MY GOD!" Was my first thougt... "WHAT was that?! Did I just hit a badger!?" was my second... Steps out of the car and I hear a man screaming NO NO NO NO!!! And i see him running trough the field and I see it's a dog! Oh god... F***!! I just stand there paralyzed not knowing what I should do. So I walk up to the man that is on is knees beside his dog and just say "I am soooo sorry!" (like for real, you have nothing to say in that situation... )

He calls his wife and she comes after a few minutes with a car and long story short we carry the dog to the car (it was still alive, sort of) and they drove of to the vets. They called me later that night and sadly it did't make it.

I am terribly sorry for there loss but that's about all i can do for them. I don't know them, never met them before, but it's anyway a very sad thing to be apart of...

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything but the next part is about the car...

When they left and I walked back to my car I realize that there is black pieces of plastic all over the road (did't see it before) and that the left front end of the car is pretty messed up. The car is also doing the "i'm about to stall"-sound, the revs goes from 1k to almost stalling and back up again. And when i try to drive away it stalls after about 6feet. It does that about 3-4 four times and the next time I start it I give it about half throttle and it's jerking for about 4 sec and after that it's smooth again but it's lacking ALOT of power. The car behaves that way since the accident and to day I drove by a DIY-shop and lifted the car to see if I could spot something and through the hole that should be covered by the black plastic surrounding the left fog lamp (hence all the plastic on the road) I see a large, about 5"x5"x2", black plastic container that is loose. Probably the fog-light housing that cracked the plastic mounting plate that is the same part as the intake that goes from the IC to the manifolds and I figure that the plastic pipe is broken or has a small hole in its wall from when the container snapped loose. And therefor the lack of power...

But the car is also giving me a few error messages on the dash!
    - ESP out of order
    - Start/Stop system malfunctioning
    - Tyre pressure monitoring out of order
    - The Engine-symbol is lit up.
And the hold assist doesn't work. The light on the button never comes on.

How could all this break down from a cracked bumper?!

But the most worryingly is the lack of power! What do that container behind the fog-light do!?

The audi-shop are taking me in on tuesday but i have to drive 500+ miles until then...

    (Pics and vid. are coming..)

    Regards
    Fredriik

You probably hit a honey badger. Its just that you pissed off honey badger and he planted the dog there. Dog probably owed honey badger money and honey badger dont play around.

Oh yeah, sorry about your poor car!

I hit a dog once and felt so shitty for a while. It's an accident and you can't change it. Life goes on. Sorry about the car but it can be fixed.

Sorry about the dog and your car. It's very typical that you would have so many failure lights when you lose boost. It happened to me when my IC pipe came loose. just fix the boost leak and clear the codes, you should be fine apart from the other damage.

Here is a video from when the car was lifted.

Think the intake pipe is cracked. But what do that container that is connected to the intake do!?

    And some pictures

    Before the accident.

    After the accident.

The dog came out from the right about where the sigh post are.

Damn, sorry about your car... Hate when animals decide to run across.

I m grateful to still have my dog, she was hit by a suv at 40 mph. she survived with 2 staples and some burnt skin.

Re: Hit a dog at 50mph last night...

If the set up is anything like the 2.0t , that box is likely the "sound box". It's really useless and not needed. In fact, euro code makes an intake pipe that deletes the sound box.

    Thanks for the replies guys!
The car is a 2.0TFSI, I just haven't changed my profile until now...

OK. So its a "sound box" and its pointless? Why is it there then? It must have some sort of purpose..?

It's probably to reduce the sound of the turbo whine, but I can't say for certain. Here is what I replaced it with:

Yeah I googled it and found this:

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...rpipe-soundbox

Looks pretty easy to remove, think I'm gonna give this a try tomorrow and take the pipe out and see if I can see any damage on it and if I do I'm just going to use plastic padding or sicaflex to cover any cracks. I realized today that i must have like zero boost! I was doing 70mph on the freeway and slowly put my foot down to pass a car to be able to change lane and I realized I wasn't gaining any speed so I put the S-Tronic in manual mode in 7th gear and going up a slight hill I was unable to keep doing 70mph even with my foot wresting on the kickdown knob under the pedal!!! And there is a quite noticeable blowing sound from the front left when the engine is under load... So the pipe/soundbox is definitely broken or cracked!

Lifted the car today and pulled away the lining in the left front wheelhouse. The Sound Box was cracked in the middle so I assume when boost builds up the soundbox cracks open and letting all the nice cool boosted air out in the atmosphere again...

Fixed it with superglue, duck tape and a hose clamp on the pipe from the intake to the soundbox just to limit the airflow to the box and ease the stress on the clue/duck tape. Now its much better than before! I don't think it's completely soild because I can feel some jerks time to time, but as I said, much much better!

Going to get the car fixed on Tuesday!

Sorry to hear your car got messed up but at least it wasnt a child... a dog is a dog.

I wonder if the eurocode pipe linked above will fit a 2013 Q5?
Your pics and info have been very helpful since I had no idea that soundbox was there.
Due to lack of ecu support at the moment ive been looking for inexpensive upgrades to reduce the turbo lag which is so apprarent on the 13' 2.0TFSI.
As it was explained to me by the audi shop foreman, a4/a5/q5 with longitudinal engine mounting (quattro) are very similar if not the same under the hood, etc. Except ive heard the APR intake doesnt fit Q5 exactly right.
Again sorry to hear your story but thanks for the cracked sound box info!
