Question Retaining cable for fuel/gas cap?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Recently purchased the OEM fuel cap below and was surprised to find it didn't include a retaining cable. Which was a bummer since that was part of the reason I even bought one (my current cap is worn out and missing the cable). Where can I buy the retaining cable itself? Doesn't have to be an "Audi genuine part" as long as it fits...

ECS Tuning also confirmed their caps don't come with retaining cables:

Make your own with some thin wire from a hardware store. Plasti dip it after you attach it. You can solder the connections then dip it.

Was hoping to avoid a DIY approach but I guess that would work...

There's clearly a spot for the retaining cable on the fuel door though, wonder why they don't include it anymore?

They do include it. You have to get the right part number.

I almost prefer NOT having a retaining cable. Why? Because the stupid cap dangles and will mar the paint finish because Audi didn't bother to give the cap a place to rest. My E39 has a nice solution to this:

^^Hahaha. Me too! Along with BMW's little spring action gas door. I can't even open the gas lid on the S4 in the winter without taking off my gloves to get my finger tips into the tiny space (and half the time I accidentally lock it again and have to go back around to the driver's door...)

Doh! How did you find this? When I select my B6 S4 and search for "gas cap" on their site, it only shows the other caps.

Maybe this feature is reserved for 5 series/A6/E class level cars?

Doesn't the lid open when you push it in from the other side? (as opposed to prying it open from the non-hinged side)

Take a look at your filler cap. There are a couple notches on one side.
Those notches allow you to hook onto the fuel door so you do not need the retaining cable.

Yeah someone pointed this out to me, but wouldn't that potentially scratch the fuel door over time? Perhaps no worse than dangling the fuel cap on the rear quarter panels over time. Maybe retrofitting that BMW fuel cap stand is the only way, or I'm obsessing over this for no good reason

I use ETKA, but you can also use vagcat.com. Those are mostly older, superseded part numbers, but it usually shows the newer part numbers on vendor sites like ECS.

That gas cap isn't cataloged for B6 vehicles since its a B7 part. Will it fit? Most likely - but we don't like to catalog parts from other cars unless its been tested by us and confirmed fitment with no issue ( in which case this hasnt been).

As others have said the notches in the gas cap allow you to hang it on the fuel door. I've been doing this since I've owned an Audi and it's never hurt the paint like the swinging of the gas cap like other vehicles.

I checked both chassis and I'm fairly certain they show the same exact part number.

8E0201553E is what we have listed for B6 vehicles 4F0201550J is what we have for B7.

I can take a look again later but like I said, I did purposely look at both chassis.

No worries, I'm sure either or would work since the B6/B7 chassis are very similar. It's just a matter of if the hanger will mount anywhere on a B6. I've never really looked on my B6 to see if it would work since I just hang the cap on the door. I'll give it a look after work.

genuineaudiparts shows it fits the '05 S4, can they be trusted? And I'm still curious why there's a spot for the retaining cable on the B6 fuel door...

I just checked again and of course, there is indeed a VIN split. Early 2005 (B6) has the part number Jason listed and later 2005.5 (B7) has the one I listed.

When I click on the fuel cap with the strap in early VIN models(circled 6A), I get this:

When I click on the fuel cap without the strap in late VIN models(circled 6), I get this:

No clue what the difference is, but they are different part numbers.

The B6 fuel door seems to have a hole for mounting the "ball" of the retaining cable. But are the nozzle diameters the same? Jason, were you able to confirm if the B7 cap fits your B6?

The B7 cap appears to have green internals (instead of blue), 4 squared off notches (instead of 2 rounded ones), and of course the strap itself. The 4 squared off notches probably weren't designed to hang off the top edge of the fuel door, hence the inclusion of a retaining cable.

Yes the B7 cap is confirmed fitment on a B6. The tab snaps right in the ring too so you can hang your gas cap from the fuel door.

    Part number confirmed 4F0201550J

    Cheers!

    Retaining cable for fuel/gas cap?

Sorry to bump this thread up guys, but I have a B6 with the BLUE gas cap (no strap) that needs to be replaced. I found a used B7 GREEN gas cap (with strap) and am wondering what's the best way to use this on my car? I don't think I have the correct fuel door on the B6 to use the strap, so should I just cut the strap off? Any other big differences between Blue Gas Cap vs. Green Gas Cap? Looking at the previous posts, they both look interchangeable on the B6 and should work without issue.

Thanks in advance to everyone for your time and help, it is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Asif

I thought there was a spot in the hing of the fuel door to "pop" in the strap for the green cap. As far as I know the blue and green are more or less the same.
