    cv joint/vibration?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Had oil changed today, and while under the vehicle, noticed a blown CV boot. Done some research on here and audiforums. The axle does not make a clicking/clanking sound while turning. The vehicle has a small vibration at certain speeds, I was thinking this could have been tire out of balance. Any thoughts??

if your boot is torn, crud can and will get in the bearings. A bad cv joint will definitely cause vibration, its usually when accelerating to high speeds or traveling at high speeds. Get the entire joint or axle replaced. Replacing the boot is just a temporary replacement. If enough junk mixed in with the grease in the joint, it won't last long with a new boot. Also, clicking/clanking is usually indicative of outer joint failure. If it's your inner boot that's torn, the joint won't necessarily click. If your inner is bad, the outer is sure to follow as well as the clicking, so it's best to replace the whole axle. It's almost the same cost as replacing a single joint, so you might as well do the whole thing.

    Isn't this thread timely.....
Had to call AAA to platform me back today, my pass. side CV is gone..... So OP here is a bit of advice....
About 8 weeks ago had the S4 on the lift for a service, tech mentioned my boot had some pinholes in it. I thought OK I'm spending enough today let's just hold off on a boot replacement..... Really Bad Effing Decision.....
So a week or so later I have new Conti's DW extremes shodded up.. after I notice I have a slight vibration at about 78-80 mph. I assumed I may have an off balance install..
Now two weeks later I develop a clicking sound when sharply turning right. I instantly know what it is....
I have milked it for the last two weeks... Today it started making a funny noise just while going straight....
On the way up to pay a College Fee, the CV started to just sound odd...
I pulled over and called AAA.. I know just from the sound it is at the point where it is about to fail.....
This would be catastrophic while driving on a convexed back road....

The moral of my tale is..... Do Not Wait ..... Have it inspected, or replace the axle Now.... Don't push it

I have to look on the A-Zine merchants and see where I'll order an Axle from.. They are not that expensive, fairly simple to DIY.
Having a shop do it is $500 for a CV rebuild ( it's an Audi Shop ) from my dealer it would be a new axle and about $800
I however can do it myself for under $300......

Go OEM or Raxles not the cheap axels from your local parts store in my opinion. Replaced mine on the B5 three times and finally the Raxel ones curred the noise and vibration at high speeds. The non OEM ones just are not balanced in my experience. Def go DIY as the install isn't too bad.

I replaced mine with R-axles and have been pleased with both their service and pricing.
I do however have to order upper and lower control arms for both sides. Only because it is time and I can't see replacing 1/4 of the system without the rest . It just doesn't make sense to do this in 4 separate wrench fests.
With a 120,000 miles I know it's just a matter of time before the other upper and lower control arms need replacing..

Im pretty sure my cv joint blew off today. But my concern is why will my car not drive now. The tow truck driver explained to me it was the cv joint, and when I'm under the car, the steering rack has no connection to the wheel at all and can move which ever way you pull or push it. to fix the problem the driver said i need to have a new front axle or something...will replacing with a new cv joint fix the problem?

i would think definitely yes. If the cv joint became detached from the axle then there is nothing making the wheel move and it will lock up
