    serpentine belt tensioner going bad

    Hi all,

I started to hear weird metal sounds under the hood yesterday. My car is a 2004 A4 with a 1.8T engine (Quattro) But I am not really sure where it is coming from. But my guess is either the serpentine (accessory) belt tensioner gone bad or may be the alternator pulley . I am posting a video of that are and sound can clearly be heard. The serpentine tensioner seems to be wiggling a lit is that normal. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
Also when this breaks when driving it does not create any mechanical problems other than the alternator goes off and all the pumps stop working and car stops. right?

Is it the pulley on the tensioner?

Remove the serpentine belt, and turn the pulley by hand...listen to its bearing for noise...

I would be 100% sure its the accessory belt tensioner/roller not the timing belt tensioner/roller.

I've got the same issue, I'm pretty sure it's the pulley. Unless the spring on the tensioner it warn really, badly, I doubt it would make the whole assemble shake like that. Anyway I plan on just changing the pulley since it's a $10-15 part. Anybody know how to get the pulley of? Do you need a press?

Edit*, not the same pulley, I see. I guess, I'll be checking the serpentine belt pulley and the idler pulley this weekend.

Thanks for the replies. I have replaced the serpentine belt tensioner assembly and the belt itself also. The noise is gone. Also no more wiggling of the tensioner assembly.

    serpentine belt tensioner going bad

Same issue I'm having now, but here is how u should check it.

Use a long screw driver, give pressure on the tensioner counterclockwise (lightly), if it stop making the noise then it is the tensioner. But be careful tho, both of the fans are there.

Edit: didn't see u already fixed it. Lol

If I do something like this I'll have to tape the screw driver to my arm so I don't accidentally drop it and fck shit up lmao
