Car starts, then suddenly shuts off. HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So the problem is when I turn the car over it starts, but like a half a second later it shuts off. There are no warning lights, but when I took it to the dealership to replace the abs module they said there was malfunction with the ECM and probably needs replacing.

P.S. the mpg gauge doesn't read correct so maybe that would be a clue to something.

Is your tip loose or come off your turbo? If you can't tell just try unplugging the MAF and then starting the car again to see if it shuts off like before.

Dos it say "SAFE" above the mileage in the odometer?
If so then something is wrong with the key
The chip inside it might be busted

Is that the light with the car/key looking light? If so then yes, it blinks after it dies.

Try unplugging your battery for an hr (hit the brakes to drain any current in the system). Sometimes the immob goes funky.

Same issue with mine a while back. Fuel pump was the issue. Get someone to start the car after you take out the injector rail w/ injectors and while covering everything so you don't make a mess, see if fuel squirts out properly and constantly. If so your fuel pump is probably not the problem.

When you turn the key and all lights go on you should hear the fuel pump pressurize the system for 1/2 a second. I have my boost gauge hooked up to the fuel pump fuse in the driver's foot area so my boost gauge turns on when the fuel pump primes the system so that way I can tell if anything is ever off...

I don't think it's the fuel pump, because after a few try's it runs fine. Probably that immobilizer acting stupid.

^ Wouldn't the immobilizer either work, or not work? I'm not sure it would cause intermediate functionality..

My car does the exact thing intermittently. The car dies after starting and the immobilizer light flashes.

I've learned to tell if will do this by turning the key to ON and waiting 2 or 3 seconds before starting. The light will flash before starting, and I know it will kill the engine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is a coil in the ignition that reads the chip in the key to validate it. If the computer can't validate the key, it kills the engine. You probably have to replace the coil and/or the ignition lock. Probably has to be programmed to the VIN or the immobilizer or something. I haven't got around to seeing about a fix as my nearest dealer is 3.5 hours away in the next state.

This is exactly what happens/what I do. Hopefully my dealer is only 20 mins away. I'll see about reprogramming my key or another one.

I'm not sure reprogramming a key will solve it. My vehicle does this with both of my keys. Anyway, if you're able to get a fix from the dealer, would you post back what they ended up doing? Hope it's not expensive to solve.

    Thanks

Sounds like you need to get the key repaired with the car. I believe that when the immobilizer doesn't all match up, the car starts for a second and then dies. You could scan it with VCDS to confirm, or find someone local that can scan it for you.

My car does this every once in a while it will start then stall out. Some times once some times up to 3 times. But it will eventually start and run perfectly fine. I'm thinking its the fuel pump.

I get no immobilizer light that shows up no check engine light or anything like that.

Hopefully you check all the easy stuff first. If it was the IMMO, you would see the light flash which you stated you don't see any lights..

That light does flash after it stalls. I guess what I meant was engine light.

No synchronization between the chip in the key and the car. First, try another key if you have one.

Could be a wonky IMMO tag within the key. That's the easiest and cheapest possible fix you could hope for. So I'd recommend you get a spare key made rapido (that means quick in spanish) before the thing leaves you stranded. Once that key completely stops working it's a 1-way flatbed to the Audi dealership where you are at their mercy (they take all your moneys).

You should always have a spare key anyway so you don't end up like this guy - schlepping a laptop to the top of a mountain in the middle of winter to program a new key all by himself. In that case, the owner was sufficiently awesome and made-it-happen with his wallet mostly intact.
^Don't listen to this guy, he's not even a mechanic.
