    Getting better gas mileage

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so last Thursday 6/06/2013, I filled my 2009 Audi A4 tank up. I filled it up to the point where I could drive 315 miles and now fives days have past and it's currently sitting at 190 miles and I only drive in my town. I also don't drive in sport mode.

To me it looks like my gas mileage is horrible and was wondering if you guys have any tips on getting better gas mileage out of a Audi. I use only premium and at $4+ a gallon here in CT.

On the highway I can get almost 500 miles to a taken in my B7 A4. In strictly city driving, I average maybe 300 miles on a tank. It works out to about 20 city/30 highway. There are cars that do far worse in the same price range. I expect my B8 to be very similar... Although with the 8 speed transmission ,I think city fuel economy may be slightly better. We will see!

City driving is terrible for mileage, I average 18-21 in the city as well.

I only have 1200 miles on my 2013 and I've been getting 26-29mpg with a 50 mile round trip commute each day. Mix of back roads and highway. Seems better than most, but I really thought for a small 4 cylinder turbo, even with AWD, I would do better. Hoping it'll improve with age. My wife's 6-cylinder outback is getting 25-26 with similar mixed driving. I love the car, just hoping for improved mileage.

My B8.5 A4 with 7K miles is getting well over 30mpg during mostly highway miles. City MPG is another story.

just drove from hartford CT to burlington VT all highway and got 31.5mpg. pretty impressive at 75-80mph the whole way.
around town i average 17-20mpg. our cars are heavy with a small motor around town, i am not surprised by this mileage. audi's traditionally are heavy and slow = poor city gas mileage.

I'm averaging out 24mpg as my daily drive half freeway half city... In a full tank I can go around 350miles. I only use chevron gas. I hate how the computer is misleading with its calculation... on the monitor, it always show me i'm average 28-30mpg over my daily trips to places... but reality I'm only getting 24mpg

I get slightly under 30mpg from pure highway driving. I don't drive in the city much so can't really provide a data point. On another note, I thought my 1.8T B6 A4 averaged better both in city and highway driving.

The info you have provided doesn't mean squat. You are guessing. What mileage are you getting? You need to calculate it manually.

100% Hwy driving I get 30-32 mpg. Mixed 20% stop-and-go/80% country roads, I get 24-25 mpg. I do not do any real city driving, but if cruising around my college town I get around 18-20 mpg. Of course I'm typically pretty easy on the gas pedal....

FWIW, I drive in/out of NYC and to/from CT, so it is a mix of city and highway plus local driving in CT. Have consistently gotten 25-26mpg with the highway component at 75-80mph. Last summer, we did a fast trip up to NH and Maine and we averaged about 33mpg............................................. ....and no excessive oil usage!

Lightweight wheels help immensely. Not too much on the highway but city with stop and go makes a big difference. I went from 30lb to 19lb wheels....acceleration, braking, and mileage have all benefited.

I replied to tell you what you need to do, because no one else had. Guessing based on a constantly fluctuating mile-to-empty number and number of days driven is pointless. I apologize if you were offended.

Edit: And if you want better mileage don't leave it in sport mode.

What I do is set the trip computer on "instantaneous MPG" and pay attention to it. Accelerate briskly from stops to get into the highest gear, then let off on the pedal to maintain speed. I managed to bring my city mileage up substantially doing this. It's surprising how little extra pedal pressure can cut economy without making you go faster.

These get pretty good highway mileage, but city is poor due to their weight. The best thing you can do is drive like you have no brakes. Every time you hit the brakes you are wasting energy spent to build momentum off as heat, and the heavier the vehicle, the more energy you are wasting. Anticipate stops and take your foot off the gas early, putting some of that momentum to work rather than wasting it. Don't build up unnecessary speed you'll just have to waste if you going from stop light to stop light. If you pretend that you can't stop, you'll save a little gas and your pads/rotors will last longer too.

Switching from 5w-40 to 0w-30 did give me a small boost,
    50/50 City/Hwy I would get 450km per tank, now I get 485km per tank.

Been noticing that if i use cruise control, it helps alot on gas mileage. No lie but the sweet spot on my car is 69,74 or 80 on my b8 using cruise control. I average 400-450 on highway depending driving and 320-350 city driving.
