2013 Allroad Vs 2009 Avant!!! HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

I am in a bit of a dilemma a the moment. Here it goes....I bought an 09' B8 Avant in Feb with 88k KMs, really well optioned out with sport package, B&O and drive select which I love. As with a few B8s, my CPO's avant failed both oil consumption tests and required an engine rebuilt with piston/rings etc. A few weeks ago, I had a PVC hose break which left me stranded and I have a feeling that there is something wrong with the steering as I am getting a lot of vibration at low speeds (I know this has been explored at length in some discussions).

SO.....my dealership offered to buy back the avant for exact amount of money I paid for it half a year ago .... if I sell privately, I would probably loose a few grand at least. As it happens, the dealer has a '13 Allroad, loaded minus the sport package which they will sell to me at $10,000 below sticker - it was a catch and release by a dude who holds onto cars for 6 months at a time. It has about 9,000 kms on it.

So what do I do...hold onto my A4 avant which personally think dynamically and style wise is more superior but is a bit of a lemon....... or buy the allroad which I like but not love...yet!

    What would you do?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like someone at the dealership wants to own your 2009 Avant or they have a customer lined up to buy it.

How "able" are you to stomach the cash costs of the 2009 having issues over time vs. the monthly costs of a 2013 allroad with warranty? I keep flip flopping between cars with/without warranty and there is something nice about having a warranty, especially when you don't have one lol.

2013 Allroad Vs 2009 Avant!!! HELP!

What's the total out-of-pocket cost if you sell it back and buy the allroad?

Personally I don't like the aesthetics of the new allroad at all. But the interior features are nice and you would have a warranty.

I'm looking at around 20k difference at the moment but Allroad is CPO already meaning 6 years of warranty! I also actually prefer the look of the avant but the Allroad is growing on me.....

That is a very good and valid question. I had Audi of Canada extend my warranty for another 6 months due to engine rebuilt etc so I have just over 2 years of warranty left on the Avant. In my market I'm looking at about 14k depreciation on both vehicles over 3-4 year period but the nice thing with keeping the avant is that it's all paid off

My 09' had stg 2 done on it and been great ever since. I love my Avant and would never consider an Allroad I just don't care for the looks plus mine was a CPO and still has warranty so that settles it. Always get looks at it and is nearly stock.

Definitely not worth the $20,000 extra. Especially considering the allroad is new so you'll lose even more on depreciation when you sell it. Considering you had a new engine put in, and that both cars are extremely similar sans interior, I would 100% keep the avant.

That's kinda what I'm thinking as well! Just the trade in value that I'm getting is better than market value plus the Allroad is discounted a further 10k..... Having said that yes $20k will buy me an old 911! Lol

Yeah, pick up a 996 haha. Also, depending on how much the dealer is willing to give you above market value, it may be worth it to sell it to them and buy another used A4 avant privately. It's probably not worth it but I don't know the numbers, just a thought.

I just went through a very similar delima myself. On whether to purchase a 2009 avant or an allroad. I ended up ordering a 2014 allroad in ibis. The added features are numerious. The major one was the 8-speed trans. I'm very excited to get mine. Although I'll be waiting a few months it seems.

Very Nice! Yes I am lovin the allroad so far. The 8 speed is taking some time to get used to. I find it a bit harsh at times, but much quicker shifts anyhow. The only downside right now are the horrible all season tires that will be replaced soon I hope!

I know i am going to sound dumb, but what is the major difference between the allroad and avant? There was a major difference between the b6 versions that I could tell. Have bigger engine or pretty much a suped up A6 Avant.

This current model has the same engine, interior and size.
Besides the suspensions, what puts these A4 B8 chasis in separate categories?

Maybe shopping for one very soon.

The old allroad was an A6 allroad (C4 platform?), the new allroad is an A4 allroad (of course we only ever called it "allroad" so it's confusing to compare the old and new). Basically the A4 allroad is an A4 avant that has the "off road" styling and extra ground clearance; not much of a real difference especially compared to the A6 allroad vs. the A6 avant in the old days (air suspension, etc.).

It's mostly clearance and more durable trim and wheel arches. The wheel arches are a plastic material that can withstand more abuse, same with the front and rear bumper lower sections.

The new A4 AllRoad is static rather than air suspension, which is a bit silly seeing as how the air suspension really made it unique and more capable of going off road. The C5 A6 AllRoad had air suspension, which is really the only main difference to set it apart from the new AllRoad (obviously the new one has all the modern bells and whistles, but the basic body components that make it an AllRoad are mostly the same).

Id never trade my Avant in for an Allroad. After taking a close look at an Allroad for two days on a loaner I really didn't like the cheap plastic exterior.
Painted or unpainted the arches felt like they could be pulled off with a light tug. Otherwise it's pretty much a lifted Avant. Id choose a Q5 over the Allroad.

Would you rather the body panels be made of metal so they can't withstand as much abuse?

Bare in mind the AllRoad is similar to a Land Rover; it's a posh, yuppy off-roader. It's design is dreamt up to be more rugged and durable allowing it to go more places, but face it, 95% of owners will never use it in those circumstances. I'd guess that the most off-road use an AllRoad sees is a gravel road to a campsite. The "cheap" plastic panels are designed to withstand more abuse from rocks and other debris that would cause more damage to metal and paint.

I think you should better understand the design intent of an AllRoad before making a statement such as its "cheap".

2013 Allroad Vs 2009 Avant!!! HELP!

Having come from a string of SUVs, a Volvo xc70 and now an A4 Allroad, I don't perceive the Allroad as being as anything but a road car, especially with the painted trim, 19" wheels and summer compound tires that mine has. It's all a matter of perspective I suppose but I think the only thing that makes it any more offroadable that anything else is slightly more ground clearance-- and most of us it seems plan to rectify that ;-)

What we (consumers) perceive it as is not quite the same as what the designers had in mind.

Like I said, it's a yuppy off-road car that will likely never go off road. When do you see people off-roading in their Land Rovers? I sure haven't and I live in Colorado; those people drive Jeeps and Toyotas.

Maybe when the B8 AllRoad has dated, people will actually use it like it was intended. Seems that was the case with the C5 AllRoad.

I understand the intent or design intent but that doesn't mean I need to like it.
It may hold up to road debris but still looks cheap and serves no benefit to me.

Just my opinion. No need to get defensive.

Not defensive, just explaining as it came across that you didn't fully understand the design intent of the AllRoad.

2013 Allroad Vs 2009 Avant!!! HELP!

I agree in that allroad is a bit of a marketing tool in some ways, however it does have features which make it capable both on and off road. There are for sure other vehicles that are MORE Capable off road but do they provide as good of an experience on road in terms of driving dynamics. I honesty can't think of a more balanced vehicle perhaps you guys can.....

There are some other features that provide better off road capability such as the new ESP programming that is native to both the Q5 and allroad.

    Cheers
