    Changing power steering fluid

Anyone have any idea how to remove the filter screen in the reservoir? I can't seem to get it out. I wanted to siphon the old fluid from the reservoir and fill with new fluid instead of pulling the hose out and possibly creating a mess/introduce air.

Looking to do the same. Anyone done this? Is it as simple as removing the old stuff, add new fluid, run the car, remove the fluid and repeated until it looks clean?

I use a Turkey Baster to remove the fluid from the reservoir and replace it with fresh fluid.
I've tried to remove the screen but couldn't. I'd love to know this as well.

I would only be able to get about half an inch of fluid if I used a turkey baster with the screen still in. I'm half tempted to just remove the screen. Heck, I managed to drive my '98 almost 200k miles without a screen, and that's on top of the 70k the previous owner put on it.

I think we have to replace the entire reservoir.

The simplest way is to bring your car in for stage 2 oil consumption fix. All engine/accessory fluids changed for free!

    Not for power steering.
Already had stage II complete prior to my ownership.

I think the screen just spins. It probably pops into place, but in my limited prying I couldn't figure out how to remove it in one piece.

Found this thread while searching for an answer so I decided to drudge it back up. How are folks changing their power steering fluid in these cars? As mentioned above, I typically use an old turkey baster to remove old fluid and fill with fresh--turn the steering wheel a few times and repeat. Does the reservoir even need a screen?

Another thing, what fluid is everyone using in their B8? Everything I've read points to Pentosin CHF 202, which is green. However, the current PS fluid in the car looks golden colored. Looking at the online owner's manual was no help since Audi conveniently decided not to mention it.

I used dealer fluid; the Pentosin will work. I have a fluid extractor; I pull all I can out of the reservoir, unplug the return line. Cap off in the reservoir and plug my extractor into the line. I fill the reservoir then have someone start the car for 2 seconds and let it push all the fluid out while I put more in. You’ll see in the clear lines of the extractor the fluid turn green from the new stuff. Reconnect the line and you’re done

Since it is a recirculating system any air will get pushed to reservoir and leave the system.

It is not like a brake system that is pushing fluid to expand the brake piston.

You may be able to have wheels off the ground and turn steering wheel lock to lock and push fluid through the return line without engine running ?

That’s what I would do to get the air out after but with the engine on. It really isn’t needed though. I’ve had no issues for 10K miles and a cross country trip with it

This works for the cooling system and for liquid cooled PCs as well.

    Which line is the return?

So when bleeding the coolant system, you don't really have to worry about air getting in there?

I don't know if the coolant constantly recirculates with the reservoir. It seems to me the fluid is just kind of sitting stagnant in the reservoir.

While the cooling system isn't exactly the same, the coolant does recirculate causing air to flow to the highest point in the system which is the overflow tank on these cars. When bleeding the system (burping) you would run the car for a few minutes with the overflow cap off (or radiator cap in other cars) so that the air can escape.

Yeah, I'm at 111K never been changed.

Though, they also told me when I bought car at 40k they had just replaced a turbo. They left out the engine part.

It's hydraulic fluid, might have some anti-rust and rubber conditioning additives in it that gets used up.
