    Flames out the tail pipe

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so haven't noticed it ever but was out at willow springs racing on Sunday and come to find out there are huge flames coming out of my tail pipe. I'm going to assume that this means the car is running rich but is this normal on a stage 2 tune? or is it so rich that its slowing me down? don't have any logs and cant get any right now (stock turbos took a shit Sunday) but im gonna be going K04's or franks now and will re tune later but im curious about this

Was it shooting loud popping flames or was it bellowing large but slow burning ones?

Answer the above......if it's loud popping flames you might have an issue but not necessarily(could be just from shifting at high rpm.....if it's the second it's probably just excess fuel and you are a little richer than needed

since we're on the subject, why does my car pop flames (the loud and short-lasting ones) when my friend drives the car (i'm recording from the outside) and this never happens to me lol? :)
Usually happens between shifting from 1st to 2nd

    like so

oh and I'm an agressive stage 2, catless downpipes and borla catback.

Slow burning means you had excess oil coming out of the exhaust combining with the heat which creates a slow burning flame. Chances are this was because your turbos were leaking. If your turbos popped that day than I would say it is most likely the cause of the problem.

Mine does the exact same thing on almost every high rpm shift, and my car runs rich. Yours is just because in first the car is expecting more boost than its getting so there is excess fuel in the exhaust which when you shift it manages to lite it. Its fine though no damage should come of it.

I understand, but why doesn't it happens when i go WOT 1-2 ? Could it be because how my friend shifts ? Because I'm afraid to shift 1. to 2nd agressively, and he isn't lol :D

Think about it......when he's shifting at ~7000 or so rpm the fuel is being shot into the cylinder so fast and the instant he lets off the accelerator pedal for a split second it's still shooting fuel into the cylinder with no spark then that fuel will pass through the cylinder hit higher temps as it passes through the exhaust system and ignight causing that brief flame/pop.

    Watch this video:

the first fire you see is what I mentioned above and is normal/fine. The second slower burning flame I'm not positive but it's still excess fuel. I think it buns slower because the exhaust gases slow tremendously in that brief time due to lack of throttle causing it to burn at a much slower rate. All in all, both aren't really harmful at all. The only really harmful flames are from excessive 2-step and possible issues with cam tnesioners causing abnormal backfires. I'm sure there are a few other instances but 95% of flames aren't bad I'd say....

Keep in mind if you have cats/resonator and muffler it will be pretty uncommon to have these flame issues

Its circumstantial sometimes, it does it whenever I punch it in first and ride it to 7k rpm, and every gear following if I rev to 7k

It's all about timing of the shift as well. When I had my RSX-S runnig just a mid-pipe I knew how to shift and time it(only if it was cold outside and hadn't been running for longer than 10-15 mins) where it would sound like a bomb went off unerneith the car......sounds ricey but it was freakin awesome.

Mine pops and gargles shifting at 2500rpm, its like a bull whip at WOT. I need to get a video to confirm fire.

Mine almost always backfires and throws a flame between the 1-2 shift..Sometimes in every gear when running it real hard, and my car isn't rich at all..When you have no cats that's what you get. I have 3 inch straight pipe with no cats. You get a ton of popping and backfiring.

Guys this is exhaust we are talking about... If we are running huge pipes and no cats, it's got to escape somewhere...

I thinks it's wicked and if you don't, you're about as ghey as they come...
