hazard lights stay on when starting car

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey guys. i searched the forums for my issues with my 04 s4 6mt
i recently just got the car and heres the thing
supposedly the battery was replaced before i got the car cause the old one wasnt holding charge
a week later key stopped working/ unlocking and locking but would open the driver door manually
and when i started the car it would start fine but the hazards would blink for about 3 -5 minutes even if i hit the hazard button it still stays on
so i got the key working with the help of a buddy at his shop and his diagnostic tools. they speacialize in land rovers and range rovers
he did say there was a code for the key but he cleared it and synced the key but he said he couldnt find anything for the hazards staying on.
he told me to go home and disconnect the battery for a night and try it in the AM. well i did that and it didnt work. :-/ like i said ive searched the forums and all that comes up is threads about switch the hazard switch.
another problem :( the climate controls dont work. the only way it turns on is by hitting the button for the windshield and then lower the temp or raising it
do you think that will work? any suggestions?
I don't know anyone with a vagcom cable might have to get one
also a friends told me to disconnect the battery and connect the possitive terminal and the negative together to completly drain the power out the car . would this work or is it crazy talk ?

You need to get a complete fault code scan done using VCDS (Ross-Tech phased out the VagCom name years ago), without that you're just guessing what the problem(s) is/are.

There is probably some silly little connection that has come loose, but like above a scan would help out.

Remove the hazard button and see if the problem goes away. If it does, there's probably a short in the switch.

Gonna do a vcds scan tomorrow post up the log and try pulling the switch see if anything happens, wouldn't that stop my signal lights from working though ?

Removed the hazard button and nothing. Problems are still there. Still on the go to get a vcds cable. Might just have to order one cause everyone that I know that has one or has offered to give me a hand hasn't been able to come by and scan the car with vcds. I'm gonna make a quick video so you guys can see what exactly I'm talking about ill post up the link from YouTube.

Disregard the engine fault codes. One of my 034 motors mount plugs was a little loose From dangling and got a check engine light after I degreased the engine bay and hosed it down caused a misfire cause my dumb ass turned the car off and didn't let the water evaporate while the car was still running turned the car off and back on again and check engine light went away pheww

A lot of strange electrical faults. I'd say you have electrical gremlins, possibly stemming from bad grounding or corroded wiring.

Wish I knew where to start looking. I'm scared of the cost if I take it to a shop I know I'm gonna get some bS like " oh it's too complicated, or take it to Audi." I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet if I can't resolve this on my own. I know someone of this forum must have some kind of knowledge on this or have had similar issues

I bought my car in Aug 1 yr ago and when winter came around the battery would lose charge if I let it sit for more than 3 days. the battery was new as of july 2012. I took it to the stealership to be replaced under the battery warranty. they replaced the battery and to my surprise the drain was still present (another story) the battery was replaced in july at the same dealer so I asked them why it was replaced before. the symptoms were (hazards flashing and fans running. replaced battery, issued resolved) the paperwork said they did a power restore after battery was replaced. not really sure what that does for the car but might be worth looking into.

Did you do the scan with the car on or off? If it was off, try with it on. It'll filter out a bunch of the faults that come up when you scan with the car off.

What condition is your battery in? This sounds very similar to what was happening to me when my battery was almost toast.

So the code about the immobilizer was still there? I wonder the issue has to do with you unlocking with the key itself. Not sure how it is with the B6's but with the newer ones you have to have the key turned in the ignition within a certain time of opening the doors with the key (or the alarm goes off).

When I was having my battery issues, this happened to me when I didn't put my key in after unlocking it manually. It was like the alarm was going off but there was no beeping.

My money is on your issue being caused some short, or a bad battery.

Yep immobilizer codes still there. If my immobilizer was bad then I figured the car wouldn't start or I would have a the fault saying "car start blocked by immobilizer" something along those lines. Or a fault saying something about the cluster since that's where the immobilizer is. And I've replaced the battery in the key too that didn't do anything

Check the relay, could be the contacts or solenoid... but if they turn off after 3-5 its definitely an alarm thing. My old A4 Jetta would do that when my door switch was faulty and I unlocked it manually. Except it would go full alarm (not locking out the immobilizer though).

Is your keyless entry up and running yet?

No I've tried to reprogram my only key and haven't had luck after trying for about an hour I got frustrated and left it alone.
Where exactly is the relay ?
Also my alarm is really really low like you can barely hear it at all from a Distance but up close its clear but not loud enough how it's supposed to be

I'm not sure of its exact location. But from the sounds of it, its not the relay. Relay issues would be alot more straightforward and just leave the hazards on whenever the car is on.

I'd look into purchasing a new fob, having yours tested or looking into the receiver side. Electrical gremlins are never easy to troubleshoot, especially via internet. You'll have to work system by system that interacts with the alarm on startup.

If I'm not mistaken every module in the car interacts with each other.
If I just unplug a unit/module ill still get a code or more codes? Why get a new key if I can't even resync my current one...
I can turn the car on, I can unlock it manually, I inserted a new battery in the FOB
I've had the key resynced with a technician it took him some time but it stopped working after a month or so.
Got a new car battery that didn't do anything, thinking of getting a optima yellow top
Only other place I haven't look is in the ECM box
I've checked all my fuses and they checked out ok.

Seems like there’s a few people in 2021 with this same issue since I originally made a post about my flashing hazards on a previously owned b6 s4
. I just replied to a user thru DM with this issue.

Upon a quick search there are users with this same issues popping up
Here and there and the info on how to solve this issues hasn’t been addressed.
We live in a technological advanced world why the F can’t we as a community solve
    simple and dumb electrical headaches

If you or anyone has had this “hazard” light issue please describe your issues and solution

Hopefully there’s a general or standard way or figuring this culprit out.

So far places to check are

    Grounding points.
    Fuses
    Relays
    Key fobs
    Central locking unit.
    Ecu
A vcdm scan / vag tool to diagnose
    Battery and cables
    Aftermarket radios
