So, how much should it cost to have my radiator replaced? (stoopid road debris)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Yep, radiator punctured by road debris yesterday . Fortunately, I was close to a dealership when it happened, so no towing was required, but the car is out of commission and I'm in a Chevy Cruze rental (dealer was out of loaners).

Quote for replacement is about $950.00. Does that sound in the ballpark to anyone else who's had this done?

Not certain yet if I'm going to make an insurance claim - still investigating that.

My advice is to install that mesh protection in the lower grill that others have mentioned. I knew about the potential issue but never addressed it, so I'm only frustrated with myself.

    Sigh.

Not worth a claim IMO. Pay for it. Not worth the possible increase in premium that may result!

Bite the bullet and pay it yourself. Not sure that your policy would cover it anyway. After that, install the mesh and be done with it. Put it on ours the first weekend we owned the car. Sorry to hear about the damage.

was it the main radiator, not the supercharger's intercooler? usually it's been the IC that's gotten dinged. either way, sorry to hear it!

The heat exchanger is a $204.00 MSRP part. You're getting jacked.

The intercooling radiator itself is $244 on Genuine, MSRP is $328. IMO, get the OEM protection screen. It has worked great on mine.

Yeah ~$700 in labor sounds like a bit much. I replaced the main radiator on my old WRX in my driveway in a couple of hours ( I had never done it before), which included refilling the coolant and burping the air out of the lines. So unless your local Audi dealer charges you ~$350/hour (not bad work if you can get it!) or they are coating your new heat exchanger in a thin layer of gold, you're getting ripped off.

Go here and buy the mesh and trim, I installed it in the garage at home in two hours.
All you need is metal shears and Torx drivers. While at it don't forget to cut out one for the

the OP only said "radiator", not the IC. So if he actually mean radiator not IC, that won't help for the bigger part.

True, but I have yet to hear of anyone actually having the radiator punctured. His case would be the first. My guess is it's the small intercooling radiator. Seems in line with the cost of repair for others who have had theirs punctured.

...and I believe that you're correct - from what little I could see when I dropped it off it's the intercooling radiator, not the main upper radiator. So, based on this, the $950-ish seems about right?

cool.. just wanted to avoid what happens sometimes in these threads, when people start answering the literal question when others understood that the OP was actually talking about something else.

in any case, i thought i remember people saying it was about $550-600 job, not over $900 for IC...

I had IC intercooler replaced at my local Audi dealership 2 yrs ago for $460. $900 seems VERY high to me. BTW. this was not the dealership from which I leased my car.

Sure you will get a lot of benefit if you track, but with those hot Chicago summers and running the notoriously aggressive timing REVO has, I would want my IAT's as low as possible to avoid knock and damage - this will help lower temps for anyone in both stop and go traffic and on spirited runs by separating the overflow from the engine radiator, coupled with a new IC radiator that has tons more surface area in contact with the coolest air first entering the front of the car.

People should stop stating that there is a possibility you insurance could go up or its too much to file a claim. This should be covered by your comprehensive side of you insurance company and WILL NOT raise you premium. You've been paying into it - as coverage - for years. This is of course assuming you do have full coverage. In NY the typical deductible is $1000 so in my case I'd pay to fix outta pocket but anything else I call my insurance company.
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

After further review, this IS a comprehensive claim, and the claim won't affect my premiums. I have Zero deductible on my comprehensive coverage, so that works out well.

Had it been a collision claim, I'd have lost an "accident-free" discount to the tune of $900 over 3 years, so in that case, it wouldn't have made any sense to go forward with the claim, particularly given my $500 deductible.

Also, after further, further review, it WAS the main radiator that was pierced. Believe it or not, the car has been sitting at the dealership for the past week waiting for an insurance adjuster to look at it. Supposed to finally happen today, and then I won't be rocking the Cruze any more. I've missed my car.....
