ARP main stud kit - are all studs the same length?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was installing my main caps with the new ARP stud kit I bought and I noticed that the outter two studs for each cap are sticking out by about 0.25 to 0.5 inches more than the inner pair. They just bottom out in the holes and all outter studs stick out by the same length so they all bottom out at the same depth. I have cleaned the threads and holes so I am sure they go all the way. Should 8 of the 16 studs be shorter and I was sold two sets of the long ones by mistake or are they supposed to stick out that much more compared to the inner studs? I already modified the oil pan to fit over the studs in the inner caps but if I modify the edge of the pan to clear the longer stud on cap 4 then I am pretty sure there will be a hole in the wall of the pan :). What's everyone's experience?

There are two different sets of main bolts in our bottom ends. It can be:

    All Equal
    8 Short and 8 Long

You need to take apart your bottom end to identify what type you need and order accordingly. The tops of the bolts should sit flush with each other. Sounds like you might of ordered the wrong kit.

I have a picture some where hold up....

I ordered the same length kit, and needed different. I just modded the pan, there is plenty there since it was just the webbing that ran from side to side. I did have to do a good amount to the oil pump though.

I wasn't given an option when I ordered the stud kit. I will talk to the vendor I bought them from and see what they can do.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Sorry to rehash old thread but I am having the identical issue. My block is an early ae block with all same length main bolts when removed, but I put all same length stud kit in and the outer bolt on all of them stick out more just like the op. what gives?

It's not the physical length of the bolts, you need to look down in the holes at the threads.

The threads are what dictates the kit.

No I'm saying the bottom of the bolt which is non threaded will run into the threads depending on what kit you need.

Look down in te holes and you'll see what I mean.

I believe the early style has same size bolts and therefore they run down thru the webbing into the "hole". (less meat, not as strong) Others like my 01.5 S4 have unequal lengths and do not run down thru the "hole". More meat. My old S4 engine is for sale-local

Even and uneven length main studs.
Its different from block to block you have to check
    before ordering.

The original bolts are all thread. The kits are only threaded so far.

The distance the threads are in the main from the top of the hole dictate the kit. Look and compare the inner and outer main bolt holes.

Look down in the main bolt holes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and see were the thread starts. If the inner and outer holes are at different depths you need the different length kit!. If they are the same you need the same length kit.
