    2008 Audi S4, high mileage!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi guys. A local dealership is selling a used 2008 Audi S4 for about $21k but it has 88k miles. Is this a good price? My concern is the miles. Should I expect any issues buying it with these miles? I appreciate the feedback.

I've actually have been searching on craigslist every day for the past 2 weeks and nothing :( The only one I saw was for a 2007 S4 $24000 with 55k miles.

It might take you a few months to find a good S car. Take your time, do your homework, and don't rush into any purchase. From the info you have provided, I would go after the lower milage 2007 car.

Appreciate the response powderrecon. I have been trying to do research on the difference between the 2007 S4 versus the 2008 S4. Are there any exterior, interior differences? Does one run faster then the other? I really appreciate your help, thank you!

no 2008 is a B7. the first B8 S4 was model year 2010, the first model year for the B8 A4's was 2009, unless it was a cab, the 2009 cab's still used the B7 body

That could be a good price depending on the details. Manual Avant in good shape at that price is a good deal. Automatic sedan probably not as much.

It features NAVIGATION, Preium Sound, LEATHER SEATS, MOON ROOF, XM SATELLITE, BLUETOOTH, and Carbon Fiber Lips. I am not sure what a manual Avant is? Here is a direct link to their website

It is a automatic if that is what you are referring too? I currently have a 2010 Camaro SS 6 speed and looking to get an automatic because work is requiring me to drive a lot more.

I have been doing a lot of research on warranty. With buying a used somewhat high mileage Audi. Do you guys recommend I get the extended warranty?

I would get the extended warranty, but do your research on what's covered, deductibles, maximum payouts, etc.

A 2008 with 88k miles would mean a consistent 15-18k per year. That's probably mostly highway miles, which are not stressful on the car.

Yeah, I was trying to do some last night and found that some people are going with Fidelity. I will be calling AAA for their extended warranty to as well. Thanks for the response.

Though I will ask the obvious: what is it about this particular S4 that you like? Unless you are in desperate need of a car, or this is some ultra-rare combination you want, don't just take the first thing you come across. Wait for the right one. These cars are somewhat rare so you'll need to be patient.

I guess we all have to agree that the S4 looks bad*ss! When I test drove it, the car was amazingly fast and the sound of the motor inside th car, wow! I fell in love with it. I can see what you mean about rare because I haven't seen one on the road around here in the Bay Area. I see a lot of A4's, A5's, A6's and some S5's.

Avant is a body style - there are regular sedans, Avants (wagon), and Cabriolets (convertible).

Transmissions are either manual or auto (tiptronic).

A black automatic sedan is the absolute most common combo so probably worth the least. A non-black manual avant is the most rare and probably worth the most.

Ahhh....the pussification of America. I drive around 50K a year and every single one of those miles in done in a manual car and a lot of those miles on some of the most congested roads in NA. I just don't get the whole "I drive a lot so I need an automatic" thing.....man up

Back on topic....Sounds like you need to do some reading and research (search will be your friend), these are pretty special cars which lead to some having pretty special (i.e.$$$$) problems. Do your homework and do not buy emotionally.

BTW, our '04 just turned 84K and, knock on wood, no major issues. It uses 1 quart of oil every 5000 miles, does not rattle on start up once the temps are above 50, and has been pretty reliable. The only costly repair was at around 60K when the AC compressor went south. I hope it stays that way because the wife and I just bought a cruising boat which means the RS4 is going to have to wait another couple years...

    Good Luck.

    Cheers,
    Jim

DTM fetches a premium as well, mileage is avg for the year, car looks good aside from the aftermarket tail lights. See if they will go down on price since some major service is coming up.

The CarFax shows the last person (3rd owner) only owned it for 7 months and put 14,000 miles on it before it was sent to auction. Having it for such a short time would kinda concern me... maybe he ran into an issue with the car? Maybe fuel was too much considering how much he drove? Maybe he had a need for something different? Who knows, but it's worth considering why he/she had it for such a short time.

I've heard Fidelity has limited liability and caps what they pay depending on repair. I fully recommend National.

i would negotiate the price down from 21k to maybe 17k under the assumption that it needs a timing service. 21k for 88k miles is a bit too much.

Although that's a low price for so few miles, is it fair to compare an '05 convertible to an '08 DTM sedan? I'm not sure about San Fran, but here convertibles are cheaper.

Thank you for breaking it down for me. I really want an automatic but there is a 2007 S4 manual selling for 24k and has 55k miles :(

I will need talk them down about the price to see if they can lower it. On KBB, it retails at about $24,000.

I will look into national for extended warranty

I'm not talking about new, I'm talking about resell... again, it's the case here and may be different in your area. More importantly, you're comparing a '08 to a '05.

Had a buddy check into the auctions (full disclosure, I used to work at a large, reputable dealership) and this car would be easily $16-17K at auction (not including auction fees, shipping, and any refurbishing work they had to do). Don't think a dealership would ever sell a car for what they bought it for, unless there's something wrong and they can't unload it. That being said, if everything checks out with the car, $21K is fairly reasonable for a loaded '08 DTM but you may be able to get as much as $2K off.

Nobody's ever gotten a great deal by not asking. Wholesale or no sale is my motto

Low ball them and see what they say

Wow, thank you so much for doing that. I sent them an offer for $18000 on the car and waiting for a response. I probably will expect them to counter offer at $20k which is still a good deal right?

Hmmmmm, so I may be getting a good deal then. I sent a low ball price and want to see what they are going to reply back with. Thank you for the input, it's very helpful.

I can't stress this enough... make sure to get it checked out by an Audi mechanic before purchase. There are too many horror stories out there!

"Good deal" is fairly subjective. What it really comes down to is what it's worth to you. Just make sure to do your research on potential costs down the road when you calculate the true cost of what you're buying. There is a reason warranties on these cars are so much more expensive than most other cars.

Thanks, if I do decide to buy it. I will bring it down to an Audi Mechanic. I may be test driving a 2007 Audi S4 from an Audi Dealership. Buying from the actually company dealership, should that give me a better piece of mind?

Also note that I sold my car in about a week... I think the price I had we perfect. Both me and the buyer were very happy- it went to a great home.

I wouldn't say that 18000 is a lowball when he sold his for 20,900. 35k mile difference is a lot. don't pay over 18k for the car, it has almost 90k miles already.
